Lucas Duda waits to hit

Lucas Duda says he’s to blame for Saturday’s loss

Lucas Duda struck out with the bases loaded in the first inning Saturday. In total, he left seven men on base and went hitless in four at-bats.

Zack Wheeler pitched a heck of a game, and I feel like I let him down today,” Duda said after the loss. “I’ve got to drive those runs in, no doubt. I’ll take the blame for this one today.”

Duda is batting .238 with a .315 PBP, 2 HR and 11 RBI since the Mets traded Ike Davis to the Pirates on April 19.

I disagree ownership puts these players under much stress

This franchise is going nowhere fast! The front office seems clueless as to what to do with this team! They traded the wrong first baseman. I don't see why they're so high on Duda. He should be traded to a American league team to be a DH! They should've signed Stephen Drew to play shortstop but nooooooo, they're to cheap to do that! So we're stuck with Tajeda. Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!

If this Sandy Alderson's version of Moneyball, he can keep it!!!!!!!!

Murphy sucks too...second game in a week he can't catch a throw by Wright. Maybe next time Wright needs to roll the ball to him...

Duda has to go...probably lost today's game too....he left 7 on base yesterday, left 6 today...play Campbell at 1B for the rest of May and then sign Kendres Morales to play first in June. Morales probably can't play first very well but he can hit...

Mets need to trade for  SS and put Flores at first everyday..may not hit 25 hrs but I could see 275-15-16 hrs and 80rbis.

I think Duda is the perfect definition of a Poor-man's Joey Votto. Watches many pitches like him but unlike Votto won't hit 25-30 homeruns and draw a crazy amount of walks.

@metsblog we release dopey Duda today no one will even bother looking at him this guy is a descent softball player at best

Noble of him to put the weight on his shoulders. But he was only part of the problem, others are to blame as well.

I think its time for terry Collins and gang to go and give wally backman a chance to see what he can do and hopefully save the season to a winning one!

Duda watches too many pitches. He truly is a potted plant at first base - he is very uncoordinated and has no idea how to move. Ike was a real first baseman! Not an imitation. Hey, I've got an idea. Let's put the big kid who should hit with power at first base.

He's been the same guy he's been the last 4 years. A below average player. Is time to look at Dykstra in AAA he's an RBI machine and give Campbell a shot at every day left. Enough with these projects that have us falling deeper into last place. 5 games below, 10 games next week.

How magnanimous.  Now can he take the blame for almost every game he has played in and they lost?

If Sandy has issued an organization wide mandate on hitting, how exactly is Hudgeons supposed to reach his hitters?  He's teaching a philosophy...that he may or may not even agree with.  How much will accentuating mechanics really help?  Practice taking a backdoor breaking ball to the opposite field only helps if you're actually allowed to offer at a backdoor breaking ball.  IMO Hudgeons is as big a puppet as TC is.

I agree with Lucas that he can be blamed for yesterday's loss. We've seen enough of Dooda to know he can't move runners on the basepath. Unfortunately, he is not the only player on the team to blame. I rather see Campbell at 1B for the double header.

Duda stinks. I'm tired of him, can't watch it.

For the record, Ike Davis batted fourth and went 1 for 3 against the Nats yesterday. He's hitting . 272, .386 OBP, and .412 SLG. I know he's a head case and needed a change of scenery. Too bad.

Face it, this team is just BAD. They can't beat teams with a worse record than them? How long shall we believe in this lie? It's not even June and I am ready to fold it up and start looking toward 2015 or 2016.

My favorite part of watching a Mets game is when Lucas Duda takes two fastballs right down the middle of the plate and then swings and misses at either a pitch in the dirt or a pitch over his head.

Jack Fitzpatrick

Does this team do anything but take pitches down the middle of the plate and swing at the ones out of the strike zone?

Wheeler is 1 and 5.  When we heard about his inevitable greatness at this time last year no one bothered to mention that 12 months hence he'd be 1 and 5.

This is what happens when you pat yourself on the back for your brilliant acquisitions well in advance of the player actually setting foot on a major league field.

Championships are for the reality based community, they're not the opaque fantasies you're constantly fed in Sandyland.

One day this Gong Show known as the Mets will get it together.   Hope I live long enough to see it.

@Albert E Lewis with all due respect Flores is not a power hitter he is not really a corner infielder either corner. Its hard to pinpoint where he should play best place maybe second. but never really the answer to first. but i agree moving Duda in a trade would be hard because nobody wants him or they will not give you anything back. Duda most likely best suited for a team that would platoon him at DH and first base. mostly a PH.

MetsFan1962

@Ben Leto . . .Winning does not seem to be what the Wilpons and FO want. TC's managerial record is .489 and less with this club. The math says we will never be a .500 club with TC as manager.

mrmet4mvp

@C.K. Dexter Haven That may be the case, but the team's hitting is ultimately the responsibility of the guy whose job it is to teach them how to hit.  What they're doing is clearly not working AT ALL, and if the approach is a mandate from Sandy then it should be Hudgens' job to insist that it be changed.

Of the team's 9 starters (according to ESPN.com), only 3 players--Wright, Lagares, and Murphy--have a batting average over .240.  And only 6 of them have an average over .200!  That means a full one-third of your starting lineup every day is hitting below the Mendoza Line, and two-thirds are hitting well below the league average.

Talent plays a part, sure, but overall these numbers reflect a total institutional failure on offense.  And that ultimately falls on one man...

@C.K. Dexter Haven ...getting tired of the Mets hitting philosophy. . Stand and watch balls down the middle of the plate and swing at the pitch that strikes you out.  Can't win games with this approach to hitting.

@MetsFan1962 I get the love affair with Campbell.  I really do.  He's the new shiny object, and we love new shiny objects.  But someone's gonna have to explain to me why a kid who play 3 years of college ball STILL played 6 full seasons on the minors...?

hankincolo
hankincolo

@hankypanky Head case? Really? TC claims in spring training he's looking really good. He was. Then he gets hurt, relatively minor injury and all of a sudden, he's not the first basemen. The bright thing to do with him would've been to tell him, privately, we'll give you a month. If you don't hit then the job goes to Lucas. In the meantime, you put Lucas in Vegas and let him get ready. Giving up on Davis the way they did was stupid.  Keeping Lucas around was just as stupid.

I did that after 1st pitch on March 31st!!

Why did any of us think they would be any better than last year? Same coaches, same team with Colon in place of Harvey and CY instead of Byrd. Throw in Grandy's slow start and you have disaster.

mrmet4mvp
mrmet4mvp

Nope, because that's what they're taught to do!

Have you ever seen a major league baseball team strike out looking at a pitch as much as these guys?  It's not just one hitter; it's the whole team.  And when it's that widespread, you know who to blame...

I'm not ready to give up on Wheeler yet. Sometimes it takes awhile for a young pitcher to figure things out, and he hasn't even been in the major leagues for a full calendar year. The talent is obviously there. Whether he can put it all together remains to be seen.

Besides, Wheeler pitched well yesterday. What it came down to is the usual problem: our lineup sucks.

@Macacawitz I've been a fan since the 1960s. The Mets have ALWAYS been known as overhyping their young players. The reality is. how many quality players has our farm system produced in the last decade? Harvey is the only potential star. Murphy is decent, Niese and Gee are number 3 starters. So far, highly touted d'Arnaud and Wheeler have done little. Would it be an incredible shock if Thor is just a run of the mill pitcher? It wouldn't be to me. His numbers in AAA are not earth shattering.

listen.. it can happen, no?

he's improved every year -- so play him until he goes on a 3-30 streak and he's back to the minors

baseball history is littered with garbage like Duda ... also it's littered with guys like Campbell who could rise up for 3 months and tear it up and maybe never be heard from again..

this team is going nowhere .. Duda makes them a 75-win team instead of a 73-win team?

no one can stomach watching Duda fail any longer -- the odds are certainly against Campbell but he has performed when he's gotten a chance.. at least there's that. we know how the Duda movie ends..

MetsFan1962
MetsFan1962

@C.K. Dexter Haven . . I don't know how much it matters. Look at Carlos Torres who was rotting in the minors and what he brings to the team. Also, look at our front office who lacks the ability to evaluate players to make a winning team.

@Steven Matregrano

his avg with RISP is .300 and dropping like a stone

he's got what... 5 multi-hit games in like 37 starts? 11 RBIs since they traded Ike? way to seize the moment, Lucas -- he has 2HR over the past month +

THEY CAN'T EVEN START HIM VS. LEFTIES!!!

having the highest average (which he doesn't anymore) with RISP on a team that can't hit doesn't say much anyway

why are you so concerned in defending this type of player? stick to meteorology .. please

MetsFan1962
MetsFan1962

@Steven Matregrano .... this is the ML and players are supposed to be ready to play on that level. I think he is under-exposed at this point. Play him to see how he fairs in back to back games. TC's flip flopping players daily is not the cure for winning games.

anymos

Yeah, a head case. The desperately tried anointing him the first baseman of the future. It didnt work. They didnt want him starting this year because they wanted to trade him. If he got off to one of his patented .150 starts, whatever market existed would have been gone.

Just stop it dude. You're not going to get your hashtag to trend on twitter. No one is going to join you in your online movement to fire Dave Hudgens. Your point could be made without the hashtag. Damn, I HATE hashtags.

Talent is there but not being maximized. Same mistake every time he goes out there. No improvement. 100 pitches by 4th inning. Poor mechanics. Guarantee if he's on Braves or Evil Empire he's a better pitcher... Those teams know how to develop and improve talent, especially pitchers.

Macacawitz

@ifti99 I just get frustrated at having smoke blown up my keister.   It's an old, tired act that never seems to end.   The Mets always have a long list of elite prospects they love to tell you about.  The problem is that few ever amount to anything.  We know why they do it; they're not big on handing out FA contracts,  doesn't make it any less annoying when the next Boy Wonder trips over the foul line and disappears into obscurity.  It's too early to give up on the most recent set of can't miss prospects, it's just hard not to anticipate their eventual demise in a puff of smoke.

sickntired

I also think ML coaches don't help these young players improve. Heck, they all regress when they get here. That's why they should be promoting Vegas coaching staff since last I checked, they are playing great ball out there.

just hope they're not overhyped: Fernando Martinez, Lastings Thrilledge ...

they will be though..

two wishes i have:

1. they never made the commitment they did to Granderson

2. they pull off a trade with some of these arms and maybe TDA or Pawleki for someone who absolutely rakes

---want a .330 guy, 30HR, 111 RBIs...

@TheJMan . . .I guess this mess is our minor league system's emphasis on pitching . . Too many 1 tool players. The FO needs to model the Braves and Marlins minor league clubs. They always bring up guys who are ready for the big stage.
