Lucas Duda hits clean up, but will likely sit next two days

Mets 1B Lucas Duda returned to the clean-up spot in the batting order Thursday against the Rockies.

Terry Collins said before the game that he hopes Duda takes hold of the lineup slot and never looks back.

“I think he’s pretty comfortable,” said Collins (ESPN, May 2).

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

That’s great. However, the Mets face left-handed starting pitchers Friday and Saturday, which could mean Josh Satin ends up starting at first base, again pushing Duda to the bench, until at least Sunday. At any rate, I’m not much for batting guys in the lineup because of their size or how they project or what tradition tells me about a ‘type of player.’ I want my most productive, hottest hitters getting the most at bats every game. That’s it. But, I realize, as obvious as that sounds, it’s not how managers tend to do things, which is why I don’t get too bogged down in debate over batting order. I don’t really care where Duda hits, as long as the team is scoring runs.

While on the subject of screwing with guys' heads, why did Wilmer Flores sit out a second game this week?  Why does this club play head games with so many of its players?

What is it with this team?  They tell Duda he's won the job, then start Ike; then they tell Duda he's the clean-up hitter and sit him against lefties?  How to screw with a player's head, 101.  If Duda is the clean-up hitter and first baseman, let him play.  Period.

Holy Crap!! If they say he is our first basemen let him play the whole year! Dont sit him against lefties, let him f#%$ play! How are you going to know how he plays unless he plays everyday?? The Mets are so frustrating to watch

We are the only team that has a cleanup hitter that sits!

I still do not think Duda has the mindset of a cleanup hitter and never will have it.

Duda also has to field, as well as hit for power. And last night, he was positively brutal at 1st. BRU-TAL. He's no Gold Glover, but has to do the basics, at least.

Plus, he's there to be a power hitter, period, no matter his spot in the lineup. HRs & dbls need to rain from his bat. Not singles. A .250 avg. is what I'd expect from a decent-to-OK power bat. But not two dbls & 3 gms with a HR in early May. If I hear, "It's still early yet," one more time from this org., my head will explode. If sucking in Apr. is A-OK, then bench the MLB roster until Memorial Day when they're good & hot, boy, and replace them with the Vegas or St. Lucie line-ups, who obviously never got that memo.

So our cleanup hitter is a platoon player.  That's not good.

if your going to sit duda play murphy at first and EY at second. Why does satin get a chance i don't understand. The lineup should be:

1. EY

2. Lagares

3. Murphy

4. Wright

5. C young

6. granderson

7. Travis D'arnaud

8. tejada

9. pitcher

but i really think DUDA should play

in less than one week Brown has 3 Hrs, 9 rbis and is batting .400 in Vegas

Satin should not be the right-handed 1B option...Campbell,Lutz and even Andrew Brown with a 1B glove would be better options with more HR potential

For those of you who keep saying we should keep Duda in there vs lefties, if that were to happen, and he struggles, as the stats suggest, you'll then move on to how Sandy and TC should have done something else, like sign Abreu.  Damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario.

Stop blaming Sandy...do you really think he enjoys going after the Chris Young's of the world versus the big, expensive fish?  He has his orders...place the blame all the way at the top...

Could have just signed Abreu and we wouldn't be in this 1B mess.

Mets need to talk to the Rays.A pitcher for Will Meyers.Thor, Mejia whatever we need bats. And Wright gets off to easy on this board. He is doing nothing.Hit .300 all you like.HR's ,RBI, We have a lite hitting .300 hitter in Murph.Time to make trades!!!

"...as long as the team is scoring runs."  You say it like it just happens.  The whole point is to structure the lineup so that you maximize your opportunities.  It's good that you don't get bogged down in debate because you'd lose.

At some point, Duda needs to hit vs lefties or he can't be more than a place holder for the season. Give Satin a start...fine, 2 games??? Just silly. Put on the big boy pa ts and produce.

@wingo43  Citifield is the factor in why it's not as bad as it sounds. Nobody has been a great clean up hitter in Citi for us yet, which means if a valid clean up hitter for us is Dan Murphy because he hits high average with doubles/singles to drive in runs, then a platoon with Duda and Flores could be just as valid.

zoddie
zoddie

Why not? Duda has hit righties well over the course of his career.

WoodsideNative

@thetruth17  Or even bring up Dykstra and give him a shot. Can't do no worse and he's hitting the cover off the ball right now. I used to pull for Duda but have given up on him.

And thinking back....didn't he hit better when he first came up? I seem to remember him getting a hair cut shortly after his arrival and he hasn't hit the same since.

Joseph DeFazio

@thetruth17  Only negative is having Murphy move around.  He has settled in nicely at 2B.  Other than that, i would agree.  Although, Duda is really just a place holder until Smith is ready in a couple years.

zoddie
zoddie

Duda can't hit lefties, period. He's better than Ike was, but he has had his entire professional career to show us that. Satin has killed lefties over his career.

That's why there's a platoon.

@thetruth17  i agree about duda, it just takes him out of his  rythem

Not that I disagree that Brown might be a better option than Satin, however, if you haven't noticed, everyone rakes in Vegas.  Chris Young was raking in Vegas.  If you sent Satin down, he would rake in Vegas.  Heck, even "Lunging" Ike Davis was raking in Vegas last year.  Its the Coor field of AAA ball.  Be careful over valuing Vegas stats...

@archer41 Until Abreu starts hitting .180 and striking out constantly. The league hasnt figured him out yet, and when they do, you will see him struggle. Can he adjust? Nobody knows because he played in a different country for years. Dont be so quick to place an all-star tag on a guy who has 30 games of experience.

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@Brian McCarthy Why would they turn around and trade a guy they just traded for? Teams are starting to hold onto their good young hitters. It's not going to happen. Why are you lighting into Wright?

sellwilpon

Lagares, Castro, wright, cron, grandy, murphy, CY, d'arnuad.

sellwilpon
sellwilpon

Also figure out who the cubs want for Castro they have Baez crushing it in triple A and ready to take the next step. 2 biggest holes

sellwilpon
sellwilpon

Gee for Cron, 1b, we have enough outfielders and Cron is blocked by Pujols. Angels need a pitcher, rays are never going to give up Myers

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@Jerry Colfer Maybe he is just a place holder until Dom Smith is ready. Im fine with that, considering 3/4 of the pitchers in baseball are right handed.

zoddie

You've never heard of a platoon? The last time the Mets won a world series, they used a bunch of platoons. I don't understand why this is a difficult concept for people here.

stage52

@WoodsideNative @thetruth17 I would not mind either Dykstra or Campball getting a shot to play 1st base.  Campbell is a righty batter and Dykstra is a Lefty

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

@zoddie Satin has killed lefties in his career?  What are you talking about?

His career consists of 100 ABs vs lefty last year....you don't get credit off hitting vs a lefty in the minors when you're 5 or 6 years older then the competition.

A little diffferent take on "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas". :-)

Brian McCarthy

Because there pitchers are hurt. And they have to trade Price this year too.No more arms in minors.I was also just using the rays as example.I live in Fl.I know that they have to trade Price. Now Moore is hurt too.And who is Cron? Not even up for Gee.Gee should get us alittle more.

Tarheel11

@sellwilpon  You people are unreal! "Baez crushing it in triple A"

.177 equals "crushing it"? I guess for the Mets that does but come on.

Jerry Colfer
Jerry Colfer

I am with you. He is just getting his feet wet at St Lucie and is a few years away. Currently hitting ~.215, but he will get it going...nice swing, good glove.

Jerry Colfer
Jerry Colfer

Because Satin is not a good 1st baseman and not much more than a bench AB. I don't know why you can't see or understand that.

sellwilpon
sellwilpon

He's a power bat/ first baseman if it weren't for being blocked he would be in the majors

stage52
stage52

@Jerry Colfer If that  is the case then let Dykstra take the job at 1st base for a few years until Smith is ready which could be another 3 years. Duda had has his chances here and still has not taken hold of the position as far as I am concerned

Jerry Colfer
Jerry Colfer

I am not down on Satin and he actually he has better fielding numbers at 1st vs 3rd or 2nd (his weakest). I just don't see any power coming from the right side and we really need that in a platoon.

zoddie
zoddie

Which is why he has a very narrow role. The small half of a platoon and rare pinch hitter. No one is asking Satin to get 600 at bats.

Jerry Colfer
Jerry Colfer

Yeah. He did but he is another of the guys who is between AAA and the majors in talent. Left out there too much he will not do as well.

zoddie
zoddie

Defensively, Satin is definitely a good first baseman. 3b is his natural position and he can play 2b as well. First base is no problem for him at all. Offensively he has shown he puts together good at bats and did quite well last year.

This year he's had 19 at bats. What kind of judgement can you make after 19 at bats?
