MLB: New York Mets at Seattle Mariners

Lucas Duda hit his career-high 17th HR on Friday

Lucas Duda his his career-high 17th home run Friday night, helping the Mets beat the Brewers, 3-2, in Milwaukee.

“He’s been told and told and told (to be more aggressive when he gets in the batter’s box),” Terry Collins said after the game. “He knows he’s got to do it. He’s talked about it in the past. He knows it. He’s got the reputation for taking the first pitch. He got a ball (Friday night) and did what he’s supposed to.”

Duda is hitting .260 this season with a .359 OBP, 17 HR and 53 RBI.

I'll be the first to admit that I was wrong about Duda. Credit goes to Alderson for making the right call in trading Ike and not Duda

Great.  Trade him now while a team might be fooled into believing he can help them win.

Just curious - Ike is at .240, 6 HR, 31 RBI.  Not great.

"That is one strong dude"-Cohen,on Duda's HR June 1st.

Duda like Wheeler have been two bright spots for the Mets this season among a couple others.

Keep it up,fellas!

And the scary part is he isn't done this season...

Duda's Hrs in consecutive games is what I've been waiting to see. A guy with power can carry a team for a few weeks.  Way to go Lucas, keep it up.

Win Probability Added (WPA) is a stat that estimates the degree to which the outcome of a particular plate appearance increased or decreased a team's probability of winning the game.  The biggest hits of 2014 so far for the Mets, in terms of Win Probability Added:

1. Lucas Duda's homer in last night's game: 58% Win Probability Added

2. Duda's two-run homer on June 1, in the top of the 11th inning against the Phillies: 49% Win Probability Added

3. Omar Quintanilla's single on April 25, tying the game against the Marlins in the bottom of the 9th by knocking in Duda from second base: 43% WPA

4. Anthony Recker's long single on April 12, knocking in two runs (Duda and Lagares) when the Mets had trailed by one, in the top of the 7th: 40% WPA

Note Lucas involved in all of these plays.

Duda making me eat crow !  Hope he can hit 25 plus a year ! His size he should hit 40 .

Over/under on Lucas reaching 25 hrs?

Duda has had a surprisingly good campaign. If he can hit .270-.275 every year with 25-30 hr, he can play 1b for me. Now if only we had a legit SS and LFer

I expect that opposing pitchers will make their first pitch to Duda high and inside: more to his chin!

Like Wheeler, I hope Duda keeps up the productivity.

I looked up Eric Campbell's numbers AS A FIRT BASEMAN only this year, and if you add in his numbers, and do an "on pace for" thing, while adding in duda's numbers and his "on pace," you're looking at a 1st Baseman that hits around .265, with a .340 OBP, .440 SLG, (.780 OPS, would like that to be a LITTLE higher, but still very good), with 30 HRs and 95 RBIs....

insane...I must admit, looks like I was VERY wrong about Duda..thought he'd give us around 20 hrs for the year, 70 rbis, with great OBP, but not come thru in the clutch...and overall, thought 1b was pretty much a black hole...never been so happy to be SOOOO wrong.

im down for a Duda/Campbell platoon til 2017 when Dom Smith is ready (whom I think is going to be a stud)...great news, just one more position we DONT have to focus on...maybe swing a Marlon Byrd reacquisition trade, have him hold down LF until Conforto is ready in 2016, and then you can just focus on that BIG trade for a SS (we know the names)....starting to finally all come together I think!

I am still shocked the mets got this move right, I really thought Ike Davis would be the one who would thrive. I'll give Lucas some time-I want to see he hit 30 Hrs

I think people (myself included) need to keep Duda in the proper perspective. For me personally I always felt like something is missing with Duda, that he wasn't the answer, but then would look at his numbers and see that they were actually quite solid. And the reason I think is because of where he fits in the team. If he's the cleanup hitter, I think his output lacks, and that why my perception if him was skewd.

But the reality is, that depending on how the team is constructed, there could absulutmy be a place for Lucas Duda going forward. If they say add an outfield bat maybe an upgrade as shortstop, and all of a sudden Duda is your 6th batter, he look a whole lot better.

I've said this a couple years back, Duda has what it takes to be fan favorite in NY.

This is a pattern that Duda has followed throughout his entire professional career, which is to say taking a million pitches while his coaches scream at him to take the bat off his shoulder and punish FBs that he watches go right down the middle. He has always started off new levels by walking (and K'ing) a ton before he then starts to swing and goes on a tear. He has the ability to go on streaks where hits hits and buts for power. I think that is what the FO was hoping for and we are starting to see. Let's hope this is the start of his take off and becomes a useful 1B. The only down side is that he always has struggled against LHers. I think he has a 30/100 season in him, if he has place setters in front of him.

I have to admit that I was skeptical about Duda.  He has issues, but he's been pretty solid this season.  Got to give it up for Lucas!

Ike Davis has 1 homer and 5 RBI in July. Has 6 homeruns for the season. Good choice.

Wasn't it a career high when he hit his 16 homer?smh

Crazy to think that he never hit more than that...I suppose he never really had a steady starting role at a position he's comfortable playing. I think Ike being gone, and the questions about who will play no longer being asked on a daily basis are doing wonders.

@Marc Singleton  joking aside if he's able to hit 260-270 with 25-30 HRs and 80-90 RBIs there is no need to look elsewhere, we have our first baseman.

Richard Alicea
Richard Alicea

@rodd  I badgered him and rightfully so...he sucked in the beginning, but he's starting to come around so obviously we are going to be supportive since we want our team to win and our players to do well...but if they suck, they deserve to be called out by the fans.

@birtelcom What about the HR Granderson hit in the 8th of  a homegame, which I believe tied the game. The Mets later won it. Does the stat require that the plate appearance puts the Mets ahead?

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@hankincolo I think he tops out at 25...yes, he can hit em out of any park, but after these next 2 in Milwaukee, they only have 7 games in HR friendly parks:  4 in Philly and 3 in Cincy.  Everything else is either in Citi or in: Oakland, Atlanta, LA Miami or DC

Campbell has OPS of .792 and Duda is .855, so I think platoon would even exceed what you have predicted, which is all good

Bob Higgins

@JasonMiles  I was the same way . Lucas is making me eat crow ! I was a big Ike fan the word is Ike might find himself out of baseball next year or the minors.  . Sad he had so much promise .

Mike Ferrara

@cj1786 Yes yes yes!  1000x yes.  Everyone becomes better on this team if they get a frigging cleanup bat they haven't had since Delgado.  Wright becomes better, Murphy becomes better, Granderson becomes better, Duda becomes better. d'Arnaud becomes better......the whole lineup changes.

Mr. SERCH
Mr. SERCH

@joe21  he's a perfect platoon player though, with Campbell, who also happens to be a perfect platoon player...and like someone said up top, if we can get a REAL big impact bat in LF or SS, suddenly a 6th spot duda/Campbell platoon is an EXCELLENT asset to our lineup

There's a a lot of talk among fans about the clutch value of a particular hit, or a particular hitter.  WPA tries to put some objective numbers around that kind of talk.  A game-tying homer is huge, but it's even bigger if it comes in the ninth instead of the eighth, and even bigger if it comes with two outs in the ninth than if it comes with one out in the ninth.  That's the kind of difference that WPA measures numerically, so we can put a number to the "clutchiness" of any particular at bat.

birtelcom
birtelcom

Granderson's bottom of the 8th game-tying homer had a 35% WPA,also quite impressive.  But not quite as impressive, from a WPA point of view, as moving the team from a run behind to a run ahead, or tying the game in the 9th.

Mr. SERCH
Mr. SERCH

@joe21  well I did Campbell's numbers strictly as a 1st baseman...I didn't want to add what he does at other positions, because then the overall "mets first baseman" numbers are skewed...if Campbell plays left, and duda plays 1st in the same game, and they both go yard, can't add 2 hrs for METS 1st BASEMEN, ya see? Cuz u cant add ALL of Campbell's numbers cuz ya gotta assume even next year, he's not going to JUST play RH 1st Baseman, ya know?
However, I know what you're saying, because if he gets MORE time to play MORE RH 1b, then the numbers, I think, will be higher...hopefully mets managers/coaches are smart enough to see this lol

Mr. SERCH
Mr. SERCH

@BronsonSNY @Mr. SERCH  I know he's young, but players can come up young if they're ready...a young start just means more experience at a younger age. I think we'll see him in 2017. Again, i'm very high on the kid. I think he'll be ready with the glove, and in the batters box at around 21...his power will develop in the majors. By then Duda will be around 32, and we have to look at how he's gonna get paid...if there's no contract prior to that, and he is doing this same kind of production, AND if this mgmt. regime is still here, ya gotta imagine that we'll trade duda or let him walk, and bring in the young, controllable (CHEAP) kid....that's part of why I keep thinking we'll see Dom in another 3 years

cj1786
cj1786

@Mike Ferrara @cj1786 Exactly, I was just thinking in terms of Duda, but it has the same effect on many players in the lineup.

joe21

75/25 split on time played and could combine to be above average 1B. Who woulda thunk that at the start of this season?

hankincolo

@mets2death He didn't miss many games while Ike started off and on for a week, very early in the season.
