Lucas Duda 3 (Baron)

Lucas Duda could work in the outfield this season

Lucas Duda could get work in the outfield in 2014, according to Sandy Alderson (Rubin, Jan. 20).

“As of today, I would expect Lucas to get some time in the outfield, but that will be decided just before spring training,” Alderson said.

Duda played in 58 games in the outfield in 2013 and posted a UZR of -12 with -11 defensive runs saved.

He did not play in the outfield once he returned from Triple-A Las Vegas in August.

Michael Baron, Contributor

Duda isn’t an outfielder. I’m not entirely sure he can even be a serviceable first baseman, either. Duda said last season he simply wasn’t comfortable anywhere other than first base, so I’m not sure what can be gained by sending him out there again. As such, if Ike Davis wins the first base job at the end of Spring Training, the logical conclusion should be send Duda to Triple-A (he still has one option remaining) or to another club in trade.

I disagree with the haters.  I think there is potential here.

How many teams have holes?  Just about ALL of them.

This guy adds to the bench depth and actually had a respectable .OPS.

I am all for keeping him and Ike.  It's Satin that I am not sold on.

So if Duda is going to play in the outfield, why not sign Nelson Cruz instead.  I haven't heard one thing from this guy in months, his price and years have to be dropping by the day.  You can move CY to center or leave Lagares and have CY on the bench.  CY should still see plenty of abs bc Cruz is a health risk, Lagares is a huge question mark offensively and he could spell Grandy once and while.  This move will not only improve our lineup by giving us a legit 5th hitter it would improve our bench immensely.  Sign Drew and Cruz.  Our bench will be ey cy tejeda satin or flores and backup catcher.

With health issues and steroids theres no way Cruz warrants more then 2 years and 10 mil a year.  All the big market teams are stacked with OFs, theres no way a medium to small market team will give this guy more then 2 yr 20 mil plus they would have to give a draft pick for him as well.

The Travelocity Gnome is a better outfielder than Duda!

Had to clean the coffee that I spit all over my desktop screen after reading the headline to this article.......

WHY!!?!?!?!?!?!? NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! CEMENT LUCAS AT 1B AND MAKE HIM A LATE-GAME PINCH HITTER!!!!!

Honsetly.... I am having trouble figuring out why the Mets brass is so enamored with this guy!!!!!!!He is the poster boy for medicority-a testament to how poorly run this organization is!!!!!

wasn't our season starting outfield bad enough last year to learn that it will lose games for us? Duda's bat does not compensate for his awful outfield play!

alderson is trolling us, knowing this will frustrate us to no end, thereby generating enough clicks to sell some more advertising and cover the batboy's salary

honestly i do not see how he will get any time in the Outfield with both the Youngs and Lagares and Grandy being out of lineup and Andrew Brown as well. it has too be a dire situation.

If this was coming from the beat reporter off an unnamed source, I'd ignore this completely. But this, coming from Alderson, is unacceptable. Lucas Duda is a borderline major-league ballplayer who's incapable of making even a passable showing in the outfield and is still a question mark for even 1B. Unless he finds his power stroke, he's not good enough to be carried by any team.

Please...unless Duda's had an epiphany, of is not a good spot for him..(Altho better than Murph ever was) but still. please..why waste the time.

The only "logical conclusion" is that duda will be on the 25 man roster whether it be starting @ 1B or as the backup1B/5thOF.  I am confident in saying this because alderson does not pay AAA players in excess of $1M.  Assuming the mets do not make any trades, the bench will consist of backup catcher (recker), 4th & 5th OF (e young/lagares & duda), backup corner IF(satin or flores) and backup middle IF(Quintanilla or Tovar)...if they sign drew, tejada becomes the backup middle IF

Someone please get Ike Davis the hell out of NY.  He's gonna ruin this team for the 3rd year in a row.

Duda and Davis, the two useless bookends, can we ever be rid of them?

Tom Gallagher

I was actually a little surprised looking back at duda's 2013 numbers. 15 hr in limited AB and a .352 OBP isn't bad. He has been terrible in the of though, and was obviously taking his struggles there to the plate with him.

metjetnet

NO HE COULD NOT!!! We have lots of options; Mr. Brutal is not one of them.

If Duda is going to get paid $1.5M+, there is no way he going to be getting that and playing in AAA! In which case, if he doesn't get the 1B job, he needs to add value to the team. He can spell Ike every once in a while.. be that power hitter off the bench. DH in AL stadiums. It isn't the worst idea to play him in the OF every once in a while too.. No one said he will be a starter.

All this stems from an unwillingness to see that Davis is done playing baseball.

you work for the wilpons yet this idiot fan base thinks alderson is the problem.  he just doesn't sign the big free agent.  Right?  he can trade a 37 year old for a top catching prospect and one of the best young pitchers in baseball however.

50% of you are idiots and the rest at least understand what is going on.

zoddie

Worst idea ever. First of all, Baron, why are you not sure that Duda can be a serviceable 1b? He was our third best hitter last year and looked totally fine defensively. His defensive stats back up that he's fine at first.

Outfield, though? Idiotic.

Duda NOT on this team.  That's the best place for him.

Metsblog is just cut and pasting articles from 2013 now. This front office is god awful

Lucas Duda should get some time as a DH in the American League where he will post average at best numbers until being released and basically never becoming an impactful major league.

And WHY are the Mets not considering Grady Sizemore on some sort of incentive laden deal.

Does anybody think Duda rejected his pay increase to tick off management and then grease the skids so he's traded?

After what they saw , how can the mets consider him in the outfield. Sometimes the Met front office is absolutely off their rockers

Sandy can't be serious. He did ridicule that outfield, which included Duda, last season.

Sure he could work in the outfield.... picking up stray balloons and hot dog wrappers.

This guy is a bum as a hitter, a bum in the outfield, and is a butcher at 1B. Your going to pay this guy almost 2 million. He also is the only arbitration eligible player who is holding out. Apparently he doesn't know he is a tomato can. Send him back to AA not AAA or release him. He is eating payroll and is an albatross around our necks. Also, he is whimpy.

zoddie

@Mike Dell ItaliaI'd rather wait on Puello than sign Cruz.  We should also give Lagares plenty of ABs to see if he can develop into an average hitter and see if his insane defense holds up to the sky-high levels he established last year.

Cruz is sneaky-mediocre.  Doesn't get on base too much, doesn't field well, and is going to be 33 next year.

They like OPS and Duda's is pretty good for a Met.

Still I'd rather see Duda's at first in a platoon than Davis and his .200 average.

@dexxvery true, if he starts of slow the booing will start from game one and only get worse, he will become the the focal point especially if the team loses! He will be a club house cancer that will slowly but surely sour the whole team, i agree, he has to go before spring training!

Mike Dell Italia
Mike Dell Italia

@Tom Gallagher I agree in 500 abs this guy will hit over 20 homers and prob have a 350 OBP, so i don't really get all the hate.  He's not great but he's not awful either.  But the Mets gotta improve elsewhere and ill be fine with those numbers at first.

Hodges14
Hodges14

@metjetnet Duda is not a good option but aside from Granderson the Mets really have no proven performers in the outfield going into 2014.  There are major concerns with EYjr, CY, and Lagares about being able to hit enough to stay in the lineup everyday.  The outfield situation is better than it was a this point last year but it's still not settled.

anymos

@Wayne Martiak Jr I was thinking the same thing.  Duda in the OF, Q back at SS, we're going back to the future.

Hodges14
Hodges14

@Wayne Martiak Jr This front office does seem to contradict itself on a fairly consistent basis but I think it's just a matter of trying to keep up with too many lies.  Their main focus since the day they got here was feeding spin to what is left of the fanbase in hopes that a few people will buy into it.

@Victor Triguero Same reason they haven't made any attempt to win in the last 6 years.  Wilpon/Madoff.

@eric88 I'm not a fan of Duda's but even if he is a marginal 4-A players, he's still likely a better hitter than you and certainly me. BTW, you're not your.

Mike Dell Italia
Mike Dell Italia

@zoddie @Mike Dell Italia Honestly i don't need my 5ht hitter getting on base, i need my 5th hitter to be aggressive and drive in runs, the opposite of duda.  25/85 is hardly mediocre.  If your ok w CY or Duda or Ike being your 5th hitter then thats ur business i on the other hand am not.

zoddie

@rubiconx0@dexxWhy?  When has he ever been a clubhouse cancer?  What are you even talking about?

nymetsrule

@hankincolo@eric88He is better because he can dedicate his life to the sport. He has the best training facilities and the best trainers and can think/play baseball 24/7. The rest of us have real life to deal with, so it isn't fair to say "You guys can't do it." Any young, healthy person can potential perform at a very high level if they have the ability, drive, and desire to dedicate themselves.
