Travis d'Arnaud 1 (Baron)

Let’s go, d’Arnaud

Mets C Travis d’Arnaud returned to the lineup Wednesday for the first time since suffering a concussion. He was hitless in four at bats in his first game and grounded out in to a double play with the bases loaded.

“We’ve got to start getting some offense out of our catching position, for sure,” Terry Collins said before the game.

This season, Mets catchers have driving in only 16 runs, which is third-worst in all of baseball.

D’Arnaud is batting .196 in 32 games this season. He hit .202 in 31 games last year.

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

Ugh, it’s frustrating, because d’Arnaud has the potential to change the dynamic of this lineup. He and Lucas Duda have always been the difference makers, more so than Curtis Granderson. In the beginning of the season, as well as in Spring Training, d’Arnaud appeared to be guessing and seemed too defensive at the plate. He started reacting better in advance of his concussion and was showing signs of better, more direct contact. However, he missed the last couple of weeks rehabbing. He looked weak on Wednesday, but that is to be expected in his first game back. I assume he’s healthy, or he wouldn’t be playing.

So, it’s getting to be time for d’Arnaud to seriously increase his production. The Mets need it, but so does he. His value must be down. He’s already been traded twice, both times for the opposing team’s ace. Mets C prospect Kevin Plawecki is on fire and making a major name for himself. Travis is 25, he has 63 games under his belt, he has the trust of his pitching staff, he’s been a top rated prospect for years, his time is now.

A catcher that has been traded three times must tell you something. He looks very weak to me and his mechanics behind the plate are awful.

d'arnaud is NOT a major league catcher!...and I don't care what alderson or some scouts say....catchers need to hit more than .200!!...he has NEVER...EVER..hit more than .200 against major league pitching....and framing pitchers???...when you have to create that nonsense as his main attribute, you know he stinks...ALL CATCHERS FRAME PITCHES...EVEN LITTLE LEAGUE CATCHERS FRAME PITCHES....we need a major league catcher here....NOT D'ARNAUD

d'arNOT stinks......they say he "frames" pitches well.

I don't care about framing pitches. I care about hits and runs. This guy is totally outclassed, minor leaguer. We were sold a "bill of goods"

How many teams can put out a lineup with so many 200 hitters ? Strikeouts are the norm. Terry Collins , Hats off to you.

The best strategy is to leave TDA alone and see if he can hit. By next year KP could be ready. If TDA fails, you give up on him when KP is ready. There are other major holes on this team such as SS, LF, and 1B. The Mets can be patient with TDA if other holes are addressed within the next year.

I have said from day one that Hudgens philosophy adversely affected TDA and Flores more than anyone. Young kids just coming up need to keep aggressive and not defensive which this philosophy dictates. It's blatantly obvious that TDA is thinking way too much instead of just reacting.

Hopefully Lamar can get him to stop thinking and be aggressive and be the kind of player that all of the scouts thought he would be.

I equate this to the state of QBs in the NFL.  They're no longer allowed to just sit and watch for a year, to learn the position and watch defenses.  They have to start the fall after they are drafted.  AND CONTRIBUTE.

Now flash to d'Arnaud...he's still new to the league, but because of the the Mets' low budget lineup, he's being expected to be a major contributor to the offense.  Not really fair that he (or a non run generating position like SS) should be expected to make up for Sandy's shortcomings building this team.

I just don't understand why the Mets didn't send this kid to Vegas to get his bat going before bringing him back to the Majors. Instead they sent him to AA where he still only went 1-8 and then they rush him back up here for some reason.

Sorry, but age 25 is no longer a "kid" in anybody's book. Either he gets on his feet in the next couple of weeks, or he learns to grow up in Las Vegas. If he doesn't work out he won't be the first bust in the history of baseball.

I hope someday the Mets payroll goes up to a modestly respectable 130 million so I can go back to Cities. Until then I can not be taken advantage of by the Wilpons.

So we're giving up on this kid already? He's 23 and has under 250 career at bats. But some people are ready to call up Plawecki from AA ball?

d'Arnaud might hit or he might not. We won't know until he's allowed to play a full season up here.

Bring up Plawecky should be brought up in late July awnd play EVERYDAY, send darneau down than to play EVERYDAY at AAA. This will allow a 2015 starter to be apparent and established. Package the loser in a Winter deal.

All Lamarsisms aside, TD needs a chance to work with Lamar. If you read the NY Post article, they really haven't had a chance to work together. Maybe Hudgens screwed with his head, who knows.

@CRAZEDMETS You are ridiculous. TDA is just a kid and 230 at bats into his career. Show patience for a Gods sake!

So on nights they put up 5 runs, the pitching isn't good enough. It's just a losing team

@Tarheel11 I think the enormous number of games Travis missed to injury the last few years may have more to do with it.

How much time before you'd drop him? Does he get a month? End of the year?

@theglider WHY SHOULD THIS guy get to fail and hit .200 all season...this is the MAJOR leagues...you do your job or you get lost...if your working as a car salesman...do you get to sell NO CARS all year and keep your job???...

@eric88 Plawecki is not ready. Mid-2015 at the earliest.

@pochemu "Plawecki!" is the sound I make when TDA strikes out.

@graves9 I agree, we need to let TDA develop.  the focus should be on DUDA and why Sandy needs to have his lover in the lineup every day.If they want to take pressure of TDA, send Duda to AA where he belongs and go sign Morales.

@Jay Cross @Tarheel11 Agree they don't help. But just watching the kid take fastballs (in fastball counts) right down the plate and just looking lost. This hunting strikes garbage has gotten in his head. Becomes too passive.

A month with the new coach should be enough time.

@theglider and of those  8 RBIs, 3 came on a 9th-inning HR  with the Mets behind 8-0.

theglider

Regardless, he hasn't been in the majors much.

Why is it that when Granderson or Flores are criticized people say it's too small a sample size. But when d'Arnaud has 106 at bats that's enough for people to want him sent down?

@jenkins @eric88 AND  D'ARNAUD IS READY???....TO LOOK AT THIRD STRIKES OVER THE MIDDLE OF THE PLATE 30 TIMES ALREADY??

@CRAZEDMETS @graves9 d'arnaud hit at every level of the minors. just cause plawecki's doing good doesn't mean he won't do the same exact thing

graves9

@CRAZEDMETS Because it's not realistic. It takes time. Look at a Jason a Castro and Devin Mesacroco.

James T Qwerk
James T Qwerk

@theglider Perhaps sending him down can help in long run. It's possible he needs some fine tuning. If he can get some good at bats in AAA, it would help with his confidence and bring him back to his potential. Trying to work out the kinks in the majors is not always the best thing, especially when your struggles are contributing to the team's overall poor offense. If he's the goods - as they say he is, he should have no problem getting his game back in the minors.

@graves9 Imagine if we had J.Abreu Instead Of DUDA at 1st- Cuban Kid- and a CRUZ-or some other GREat BAT- In outfield- and a SSTOP-be in1st
