Lennon: Mets Looking for More Fire than Torre

“In [managerial] discussions among the team’s upper management, Torre’s name has not come up, despite his history with the Mets and great success in the Bronx. Even before Torre’s announcement, he was expected to become available this offseason, but the Mets do not see him as the right fit in their restructuring plans this winter.”

David Lennon, Newsday

I don’t want to knock Torre, because I think he is a great baseball presence, and a great manager, but in this situation for the Mets with this group of players along with what appears to be the direction of the team, I think he is the wrong personality for this team, at this time.

I would hope the Mets approach is to hire someone with a spicy personality – I think Wally Backman fits that criteria, but at the same time, I don’t want the complete extremes that could come with him. I like his fire, and I believe he could be a winning presence, but I would want a balance between the two.

However, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Torre would listen should the Mets become interested in Torre, who still owns a home in Westchester County in New York.
