Least you should know from Wednesday’s hot stove, pres. by Citi

The Mets will sign Bartolo Colon to a two-year, $20 million deal, according to multiple reports…

Ike Davis will probably be on the Mets when the Winter Meetings end Thursday, though he’ll likely be traded once James Loney signs a new deal (Rubin, Dec. 11). The Mets considered trading Daniel Murphy this week, but their asking price was ‘substantial,’ according to people checked in on him (Rubin, Dec. 11).

The Mets are clearly looking in to free-agent relief pitchers, while showing interest in John Axford and Kevin Gregg (Duquette, Dec. 11), as well as Chris Perez (Rubin, Dec. 9) and Mitchell Boggs (Sherman, Dec. 9).

Sandy Alderson is willing to give up his top draft pick to sign Stephen Drew, but he’ll need to free up payroll to do it (McAdam, Dec. 10).

Is character important as the Texas Rangers state here?

"The Rangers know Wilson is settling in to a successful career as the signal-caller for a Super Bowl contender, but they like Wilson's character and athletic ability. Even if baseball isn't in Wilson's future, the Rangers want him around.

General manager Jon Daniels called Wilson -- impressed that the quarterback was working out at 6:30 a.m. PT, shortly after the Rangers made the pick -- and told him the club wasn't trying to distract him from his current job."

I Love the Colon signing! One question though: What kind of message does this send to Ruben Tejada :-)

This team is playoff bound IF they keep Ike Davis!

This may seem strange, but seeing the Mets spend $20 million on a 40 year old pitcher, and hearing Ron Darling on MLB saying how it's a good deal, I'm happy with the signing, and happier with the "Plan". Mets get another bat and I will purchase 4 seats in one of their 20 game "plan"!

Volquez signs a 1 year 5 mill deal and we give colon 2 years at 10 each, not good sandy

Once every other 1st baseman is off the market or is confirmed to not be on the market, and all retired 1st basemen confirm that they will not come out of retirement, and non-1st basemen all confirm no interest in ever playing 1st base, we may see some market for Ike.

Need a couple of power bats for the outfield check young and grandy need a vet sp to anchor the staff until Harvey is ready check colon!!sandy is filling the holes with real mlb players I don't understand the ppl that are still crying and he has 2 more holes to fill bullpen arm and ss trust me he will get it done

Where are all the morons that said the Mets wouldn't spend a dime this winter? Unreal.

87 million dollars for 3 guys and they are possibly not done yet.

If sandy is looking for salary relief in trading Ike. I don't see how it makes sense for the rumored Matt Joyce swap. I don't like the deal and it will free up little money if at all

Bringing in Colon seems like a good move.  He had a good year last year (18-6, 2.65) even though he was 39.  I worry about his ability to stay healthy at 40, but the upside is solid.

I find it interesting that Sandy is searching for young pitching in return for Ike and even Murph when his name was being floated around.  The Thornburg kid is a pretty legit prospect that's been clocked in the high 90's as a reliever, but sits at 90-93 as a SP.

That said, part of me wonders if this type of move to get even more young pitching is apart of a future plan to get the big-name-bat lots of people are looking for.  I mean, at that point the Mets could offer up a package few teams could rival, and still have depth left after the fact.

Let's see what Sandy can do.

I didnt like this signing at first, because I really feel like Stephen Drew would put us over the hump as far as contending for a wild card, but I think if we can move Ike for a bullpen arm that is still making league minimum like a Josh Edgin typ, we may just be able toadd Drew also. His defense at SS would be a big boost to our pitching staff.

I also think that if we are not in contention that someone like the D Backs would love to add Colon at the deadline for Gregorious or Owings. He will at least be goo until July & we can flip him for a young SS. We would be loaded for 2015 with plenty of $$$ to spend in the offfseason as C. Young would be coming off the books as well.

After hearing the A's talk about how he was a mentor for their pitching (he throws strikes), and how he great he was in the clubhouse, I think the Mets made the right move. Is it risky? Sure, but for the up side Colon offers it's worth it.

My biggest worry is him having to bat and run the bases.

Volquez struggled mightily last season and has serious control issues. Age or not, Colon is the better pitcher.

C'mon they have an 83m dollar payroll. Colon just signed for 20m the Nats just signed a fourth of er for 13m. They aren't exactly pumping a fortune into the team. That being said if they add a couple more players, SS and one more bat , then they had a good offseason. I just don't see how getting colon for two at 20m gets them off the hook with everything else. I mean Francisco and marcum combined for 10.5m last yeAr so basically they slid over the money.

tullydew

They still have a minor league payroll. A 87 million dollar payroll is embarrassing for a team in NY.

Pathetic and unacceptable

jasonbay

@Mike 13M Grandy, 7M Young, $10M Colon = $30M in 2014 dollars.  They said their budget was $25-30M this offseason.  Congratulations to them for spending that money.  Their payroll is still going to be in the bottom third of the league.

moving Ike would be nice.. yes i agree

Trading Murphy-Montreo-Degrom-Puello for Castro and Samardzja would make things even better..

sign Perez Setup man

sign buck back C

If in hunt make a move.. bring up Syndergard..

Trade for an OF maybe Gee and Lageras for Cespedes mid season .. he has a nice contract  through 2015 not a fa until 2018... i would do that

@dexx how are we all of a sudden close to contending for a wild card?  the offense was beyond atrocious last season.  granderson will help, but only slightly.  there are glaring holes at SS and 1B.  the team is also very offensively challenged at C, CF, and RF.  even if drew was somehow signed d'Arnaud and lagares would need to make huge improvements at the plate to get this team even remotely close to a WC.  as constructed right now this is a 70-75 win team.  with drew maybe it jumps up to 74-78.  and with d'Arnaud and lagares significantly improving maybe an 80-83 win team.  that wont get you the WC.

@pundit18 I'd prefer a trade for Chris Owings, but I've got some drool going as well.  He's not a drool worthy player, but it's more drooling at the idea the Mets could be somewhat decent with him as a final piece.

fedupfan13

They're trying? What are we rooting for a one legged man in a triathlon? Have expectations fallen so low that now they get credit for trying? We are not a spoiled fanbase. Most losing seasons in a row now, ever decreasing payroll. If it decreases again this year which it still could then they are a fraud. If they go out get a SS, one more bat and fix the bullpen then they did a good job. The only thing that can stop them from finishing the team would be a desire to have a payroll under 100m and that wouldn't reAlly be trying, would it?

metfan8669
metfan8669

@jasonbay @Mlb GM - You two are crazy.   Have you looked at the numbers?  Volquez is terrible.   He pitched in SD, in a very friendly pitcher park and was terrible. - His ERA was more than double Colon's.    You guys are straight up on crack if you would rather have Volquez.  -- I would rather have Pelfrey back over Volquez.

Seriously though, bring back Big Pelf on a minor league deal Sandy!!!

Payroll does not matter. If you have major league talent, nobody cares.

When I was younger, part of the charm was how theydid not buy everyone, but would have Piazza type guy to star.

Payroll is a concern for younger fans and those envious of Yankees and red Sox.

Bottom line, we have the workings of ateam. Payroll be damned, i can live knowing we have major leaguers agagain.

This whining is crazy. If it is all about payroll, you are cheering for the wrong team

Robby Johnson
Robby Johnson

@Rob O'Rourke @Robby Johnson I think a dark horse in this is Puello.  If this kid keeps mashing - and let's be real, he was absolutely killing the ball last year - he could wind up making an impact this year.  That could legitimately change everything.  Either CY or Lagares to the bench and throw in that pop.

Robby Johnson
Robby Johnson

@Rob O'Rourke @Robby Johnson Here's the thing though - Samardjza is due to get paid, and he's looking for serious $$.  In the coming years we'll need to pay Harvey a sh*t ton along with Wheeler.  That's a lot to have tied up in SP.

And you really have to figure the Boras mindset into this - he's going to want to make Harvey the highest paid pitcher in the game if he continues as he was and the fact that he's in the NY market.

Robby Johnson
Robby Johnson

@BigAl831 @pundit18 Well said.  The guy plays above average defense.  I think people fail to realize how important having a good defensive SS is when your team is built around pitching.

Also, he's a career .283 leadoff hitter.  We currently need one of those in a bad way.  I love EYjr, but he'll best serve this team as a 4th OF and someone that can make a difference later in games.

fedupfan13
fedupfan13

With what they have committed they could actually have a payroll that is10m below league average and still field a very good team . That's what bothers me that the goal seems to keep the payroll another 20m below that instead of grabbing their balls and going a little further. They would still be below average in payroll is Cruz so much to ask for and a 10m closer in that situation

metfan8669
metfan8669

@fedupfan13 - Well, like I said they ARE improving.  We don't know much about the Cruz or B.Wilson situations. -- Maybe Cruz already have offers on the table?  Maybe Sandy doesn't think he is worth a long term investment?  Maybe he doesn't give them flexibility next off season.   Wilson on the other hand seemed destined to go to the Dodgers.  And would you take Parnell out of the closers role this year for a one year rental of Wilson? -  Do you want to stay away from cheap options like Hawkins was last year?  It seemed to me that Wilson wanted to stay on the west coast as he has his entire career.

My point is just that you can't rant and rave like they aren't doing anything.  -- This team is better than last years team. (Granted losing Harvey didn't help.)

And while I agree that they should be able to spend more and be above $100million in salary, I also don't think they be running around signing everyone and their mom just to fill the roster as quick as possible.

We are only 6 weeks removed from the WS.

fedupfan13
fedupfan13

I forgot about Nelson Cruz he would help tremendously and won't cost a fortune. I also would have offered Brian Wilson the closers job. Obviously I didn't expect all these moves you just asked for my ideas. These two moves could have been made, put the mets with about 110m as a payroll you could actually leave Tejada at that point and have a real solid team for 110m

fedupfan13
fedupfan13

I would want drew I think he helps. I would have wanted Nathan didn't want young. I'm not going to say they should have crippled themselves with Choo or Elsbury but I would look into kemp. Elvis andrus would help if no Drew also Kinsler would help don't know if that was a salary dump or he had trade value. I think Morales for firstbase stinks but hart would have been a big upgrade and I would look to see what other firstbaseman were available via trade. What's left out of FA s other then Drew and the relievers no one left. I don't think they need a fifth starter. Look what I'm trying to say is there are trade candidates out there we don't know about, like fister was, I just don't want to keep hearing they are tied to 85m. If they can't improve bec no trades can be made so be it but please don't do it bec of that budget.

metfan8669
metfan8669

@fedupfan13 - Who said anything about them "taking bows"?  I still don't know what you expect.   So you don't want to spend on Choo, which I don't either.   That's  all we know about your expectations.  -- You want them to pay Balfour 3yrs/$10mill per?  Do we really need to go nuts on a bullpen right now?

So, other than Drew, what do you think they could have done by now?

"Commending them for trying." - They are improving the team.  Not "Trying" but actually improving the team.

fedupfan13
fedupfan13

Fill the holes. Just stop sticking to a ridiculously low budget and fill the holes. They need a SS they need another bat and they need to fix the bullpen. Money should not stop this. We are not asking for Choo. We are asking for some more good players. Just I don't think they should be taking bows just yet. And commending them for trying is crazy.

metfan8669
metfan8669

@fedupfan13 - You are clearly fed up, but this team is going in the right direction.  -- They just spent some money and we still have two weeks BEFORE CHRISTMAS!   We aren't even close to Spring Training and you are crying as if we have the same lineup as last year.  I don't want Drew for 3 years at $12m per.   So what do they have to do to satisfy you?

fedupfan13
fedupfan13

It's not all about payroll. It's the fact that they are saying they can't do x until they trade y. With an 80m dollar payroll that's ridiculous. If this team had no holes then no one would complain about payroll this year. How ever with the prices they charge in years that they have a chance to win the payroll should be minimum top 10 in the league, otherwise the owners are getting all the money and not the product.

mikepiazza3186

Yes every season is long and different I'm looking forward to a wc race in 2014 if sandy can fill a couple of more holes!!! Get Drew sandy no more tejada drama

@Robby Johnson @Rob O'Rourke But Samardjza is not a free agent until 2016 and will get 4mil a yr til that time..and we hope to make a run in 2015... so we would have 2 yrs under control with him .. we have Harvey and Wheeler under control through 2019 .. which is 5 more years.. in 5 years a lot can happen .those 3 contracts are not the problem right now.. I dont understand what you mean...we need to win before they get to free agency ..not after.. like contend now.. win in 2015-16-17-18.. not plan for the 2019 season

Robby Johnson

@BigAl831 @Robby Johnson @pundit18 Amen on Ike's upside, and I would like to see Duda get those reps too.  I'm just not sure if the Mets will show the same patience with him that they showed with Ike.

I'm not going to sleep on Satin either.  He might not hit the HRs, but the guy maintained a solid average and figured out ways to get on base.

If this team can find sources of power from guys like Granderson, CY, Wright, or d'Arnaud - I think you can afford to live with a doubles-type 1B that fights every AB.

BigAl831
BigAl831

@Robby Johnson @BigAl831 @pundit18 I agree.  Also Lucas Duda, if given 400 plus at bats at first base, will produce more than some Mets fans think.  I just like Ike's upside so much more.

Robby Johnson
Robby Johnson

@BigAl831 @Robby Johnson @pundit18 I wouldn't mind those guys 1-2 if it happens.  Drew has never stolen a ton of bases, so it would be nice to have Murph's bat control for hit-and-runs and situational hitting.

I love Ike and I totally feel for the dude.  People that haven't played ball at a high level don't realize how big the mental side can be.  You could literally see him changing his mechanics every single at-bat, and that's the absolute worst thing any hitter can do.

That said, I just don't think NY is good for him.  The guy hits one slump early one, the Boo's rain down, and it's back to square one.  I won't be mad if they keep him, but I won't be expecting much.

BigAl831
BigAl831

@Robby Johnson @BigAl831 @pundit18 The idea of Drew and Murphy 1-2 doesn't sound too bad.  What's your feeling on Ike?  I've been very torn about it but I have a feeling I'll be content with whatever happens.
