Matthew Cerrone, Lead WriterIt seems the Mets and Rangers have not had meaningful trade talks since the Winter Meetings, and the Mets and Angels haven’t been in contact since before that, according to people who would know.
However, I have to think that changes now that the Angels signed Josh Hamilton and have a bat to swap for pitching, which they need.
The Angels like Dickey, because he’s the best bang for the buck, he gives them a different look, goes deep in games and can help protect the bullpen. He makes perfect sense for them, but the early buzz from LA is they intend to shop DH Kendry Morales not outfielders Peter Bourjos or Mark Trumbo.
The thing is, I’m not sure it matters, because I’ve heard the Mets are not that enamored with Bourjos because they want more power. Similarly, they don’t love Rangers OF Leonys Martin, and they have questions about how 25-year-old OF Mike Olt can transition to the outfield. And, while both teams are willing to part with other players, such as Garret Richards and Martin Perez, I don’t yet see how these teams make their parts fit.
Also tricky is that, while the Blue Jays will trade C prospect Travis D’Arnaud and OF Anthony Gose, Toronto wants Jon Niese (not Dickey) and other parts to make the deal complete.
That said, I think the situation can change slightly now that Anibal Sanchez inked his deal in Detroit and Dickey has become the best starting pitcher available.
In either case, it is beginning to feel like – finally – this Dickey Situation can be resolved one way or the other within the next week…
