The Mets have been trying hard to trade RHP Bartolo Colon (Knobler, July 22).
However, while they are willing to pay some of his remaining salary this season, (Martino, July 25), they are unwilling to pick up a portion of his $11 million in 2015 (Carig, July 22), which is exactly what interested teams are asking them to do (NY Post, July 23).
5 pm: The Royals have shown interest in Colon (Martino, July 29). Kansas City is also interested in A.J. Burnett, the report said.
Colon, 41, pitched into the eighth inning Monday night as the Mets beat the Phillies, 7-1, at Citi Field.
He surrendered 10 hits, let up one run, struck out six, tossed 121 pitches and is now 10-8 with a 3.88 ERA this season.
“I would say nothing will happen,” Sandy Alderson said about his chances of making a trade before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. However, “you never know what’s going to transpire in the last three days or so.”
Colon continues to tell reporters he is not bothered by the speculation he could end up on a new team in the next few days.
“I know there’s talk about it because it’s everywhere, but I don’t really pay attention to anything anyone is saying,” Colon said through a translator (NY Post, July 28). “I’m happy here. I would like to stay here, but it’s really not up to me.”
