Latest trade rumors for Colon: Happy in NY, Royals may be interested

The Mets have been trying hard to trade RHP Bartolo Colon (Knobler, July 22).

However, while they are willing to pay some of his remaining salary this season, (Martino, July 25), they are unwilling to pick up a portion of his $11 million in 2015 (Carig, July 22), which is exactly what interested teams are asking them to do (NY Post, July 23).

5 pm: The Royals have shown interest in Colon (Martino, July 29). Kansas City is also interested in A.J. Burnett, the report said.

Colon, 41, pitched into the eighth inning Monday night as the Mets beat the Phillies, 7-1, at Citi Field.

He surrendered 10 hits, let up one run, struck out six, tossed 121 pitches and is now 10-8 with a 3.88 ERA this season.

“I would say nothing will happen,” Sandy Alderson said about his chances of making a trade before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. However, “you never know what’s going to transpire in the last three days or so.”

Colon continues to tell reporters he is not bothered by the speculation he could end up on a new team in the next few days.

“I know there’s talk about it because it’s everywhere, but I don’t really pay attention to anything anyone is saying,” Colon said through a translator (NY Post, July 28). “I’m happy here. I would like to stay here, but it’s really not up to me.”

It is a bit surprising to see so little interest until you realize how many teams are shopping pitchers,if Colon continues to pitch well may get some interest after trade deadline and definitely during offseason

I thought a team or two might come around. Great job by SA in just saying, "there's no interest, whatever, no problem." Let them get there on their own. The days of holding up the jiddery gotta-get-a-deal-done Mets are over.

If I'm SA i'm taking a nice prospect and not paying a dime of next year. You're getting a very solid starting pitcher at a easily absorbable 11 million. Stop worrying and penny pinching and go for it.

If the Mets can work a trade to clear Bartolo Colon's salary,  I say do it.
Even if we get just marginal prospects in return from
KC -  They have a few interesting LHP in AA and A Ball

Use that money to sign Yasmani Tomas to play RF or LF , because why let another  Cuban Power Hitter
slip right through our fingers.

Then work a trade with CHW for Alexi Ramirez  for Dilon Gee ,  Wilmer Flores, and a SP prospect
I think that gets it done.  Gee instantly becomes their #2 or #3 SP behind Sale and in front of Quintana.

Ramirez helps his fellow Cuban get acclimated.
I think this team is a contender and we don't sacrifice much for the future.
Our 25 man roster looks something like this.

SP  Harvey
SP  Wheeler
SP  Niese
SP  DeGrom
SP  Syndergaard

LR  Montero
RP  Torres
RP  Edgin
RP  Black
RP  Familia
RP  Parnell
CP  Mejia

C    D'Arnaud , Plawecki
1B  Duda        , Campbell
2B  Murphy
SS  Ramirez   ,  Tejada
3B  Wright
RF  Tomas
CF  Lagares  ,  Den Dekker
LF  Granderson , EYJ

If I'm KC I want Colon much more than I want Burnett. Colon is a perfect # 5 for a contender. He will always give you innings, and simply throws strikes.

So the Royals are looking at Colon and Burnett? Assuming Burnett makes 7 more starts, he is more expensive than Colon. He has a signing bonus worth 7.5M that is still due and his 2015 money looks like around 12M so he's going to cost about 20M!

Not for nothing but I'd rather have Colon at 11M than Burnett at 20M! Wonder how much of that Philly is going to have to eat to move him

Hmm...how about Bartolo Colon for Christian Colon? He can play SS or 2B and can be under team control for a long time. He is a Sandy Alderson guy, hitting for a high OBP and has some speed.

If Syndergaard is getting hammered why shouldn't his value be diminished? Noah would have to be part of a bigger package for the other team to give back anything of value. Hopefully the package doesn't include Wheeler.

The Royals are interested?  Hum, I hear Raul Mondasi's son is a great shortstop.

Matt Cain is visiting James Andrews...he might be out for the year, which obvi means the Giants could be looking for a starter in addition to Peavy

If he likes it here I say let's keep him for the rest of the season. We could try trading him in the offseason

If the Mets deal Syndegaard in a deal for Tulowitzki, as some less reputable blogs are reporting, why would they even think of getting rid of Bartolo?

texasmetsfan

why in the world would the mets release colon or trade him for after waivers for someone willing to pick up his salary?  10M per year is cheap for a pitcher producing the results Colon is.

You can never have too much pitching for next year, and for this year.....a decent homestand puts the mets at .500 and in the WC race...or at least make it interesting thru August.  The guy is contributing and is relatively inexpensive.

I was totally shocked that the Giants would trade for Peavey instead of Colon. But maybe they'd still be interested. Sabean is a wheeler-dealer type. He has 4 SS's or combination of SS's in his MLB Top 20. Surely he could spare one. The Giants can afford the payroll.

OT Trade Story: did anyone hear Keith Hernandez remembering Frank Cashen tell the story of how his trade to NY went down?

Whitey Herzog called Frank Cashen and expressed interest in Neil Allen. A lot of teams were sending out feelers on Allen.  Cashen told Whitey, "who are you thinking in return?"  and Whitey replied "How about Keith?"  Cashen's eye's popped out of his head, he had to catch his breath, he put the phone receiver away from his face for a few seconds to shield his giggles of delight and then he replied to Whitey, "yeah maybe, you thinking straight up?"

Sometimes those great trades are not the product of due diligence or inspiration, they just happen because one team wants to change it up.  Less and less these days but it still happens.

@METS HAPPEN Much better than the proposed trades flying through this site. Any body that wants to trade even one of Harvey, Wheeler, degrom, Thor or Matz needs to go back to the drawing board. The whole idea is to keep these future stars with the Mets.

@mets2death

If by some chance the Mets got Tulo, he'd sit on the bench cause the Mets are playing well with Tejada.

@mets2death isn't EVERYBODY  tired of Wilmer questions?

The irony is that the mets have another player in their minor league system who is highly regarded (but years away)named "Wilmer"

so even if it ends it will never end :)

@Tarheel11 Not for nothing but I like Colon as a pitcher more than I like Burnett.

@Jeff Steinberg I'd be curious about both Christian Colon and Alex Gordon from KC, but Gordon might have to wait until the offseason though.

@hankypanky He's not getting hammered. He's been great in 3 of his last 4 starts.

@hankypanky  I think his upside and the fact that he pitches in Vegas outweighs his so-so performance this season in the eyes of most in the know.  For whatever it's worth, I've read from some local columnists that the Mets would part with Wheeler before Syndergaard.

@Eric Koeller  I think Cain was the one they were replacing with Peavey.

Off the top of my head:  Lincecum, Bumgarner, Vogelsong, Hudson, Peavey.  Are any of the first 4 injured?  If not, I doubt SF would be seriously in play for Bartolo.

They need to free up payroll to take on Tulo's salary

@Doubleday I think he's a goner.  So is either Gee or Neise, preferably the latter.

jamets

@texasmetsfan  Agreed.  I don't think there's any chance the Mets would let him go just to dump his salary.  He is underpaid this year at $9 million and $11 million is reasonable for next year, even at age 42.

Not sure if this is the front office trying to manage expectations - basically makes whatever we get for him look better once these kind of rumors are out there.

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@rico Weren't the Cards pissed at Keith about something though? I thought there was something else behind it like management was pissed at him for something else. I thought he also renegotiated his contract as soon as he came to the Mets. Could be wrong though.

Would be nice to get a piece like that

METS HAPPEN

@banksta  Hell, so is the Bullpen.  That's a nasty array of arms.  Only worry would be if Edgin fails he is the only LHP, but we have Jack Leatherisch who'll be at AAA next year.

Could not agree more, those 5 all have the potential to #1 starters and all under control for along time for very little $, Colon, Gee, Niese are all trade chips, if not now definitely during offseason, Hefner and Montero are a couple of others, I would move Murphy too, not worth $8-$12 mil which is what he will probably be asking for, he will never be an above average defender, though a solid hitter not worth that kind of $, make room for Herrera, he is hitting better then Murphy hit at AA and he is 3yrs younger then Murph was when he was there, he will fit in nice at the top of the order and will be an upgrade defensively

jenkins

@imjimmybx He's turning it on. He knows he's up here soon-did what he had to do, work on secondary pitches.

@1harris1 @Eric Koeller why not peavy is skeevey.  Colon is a winner and thats what they are looking to do.

Just because SF  picked up Pet-Peavey doesn't mean they are done.  Like saying after signing Dan Uggla they won't look to upgrade at 2B

@jamets @texasmetsfan but they don't have room for Bart to start next year.. I think they'll release him rather than pay.

I think they'll trade Niese too with Matz close.

I think they were upset cause he was having issues with drugs. Don't quote me on that though. I'm not sure of the exact reason

@semperfi  I was actually thinking the same thing.   This would be the lineup at the beginning of the season.  If Dilson keeps hitting like he has at AA this year.   I say he spends 1/2 a season at LV before pushing for time at the MLB level.  I wouldn't trade Murph before I had to b/c injuries can happen and God forbid Wright or Duda get hurt, Murph could slide over to 1B or 3B.

heynow20
heynow20

Huh? How do you think the mets signed grandy, colon and cy? By using the money freed up from expiring contracts...if the dump colon's salary for remainder of this year and all of next, as well as cy, tulo's salary is a lot more palatable. Get a clue...

nym68
nym68

@jenkins @jamets @texasmetsfan ooops. I just read your comment about releasing Colon instead of paying him. I'm sorry about calling you out on Matz. Your Colon being released comment was clearly dumber. The Mets would be on the hook for all of the money they owe Colon if they just release him..... baseball economics 101...you idiot!

nym68
nym68

@jenkins @jamets @texasmetsfan I read on here often that a player is close when in actuality they aren't exactly"close" As of now Matz is the perfect example. Let me know when he's in AAA and when he starts dominating AAA hitters. Until then he's a prospect....a top tier prospect perhaps, but not a "close" prospects at all

Bo Beck

Is Syndergaard dominating hitters no he isn't otherwise his ERA wouldn't be in the high 4's. Isn't he considered close lol.

nym68

@jenkins @nym68 @jamets @texasmetsfan get a clue before you play GM wannabe junior. You said two things abd one was dumber than the other. I've got an idea...when the Mets "release" Colon this week, call me anything you want and I'll publicly bow to you. Until then try learning how the sport works before playing genius....freaking A s s wipe

The fact that you have no response other than "beat it troll" clearly shows who won that argument. Tell me, what about his posts made him sound like a troll? Everything he said is 100% correct. Metsblog has way too many "fans" like you...
