MLB: New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies

Latest on Bartolo Colon…

Bartolo Colon cleared waivers (Fox Sports, August 25), meaning he can now be traded to any team.

However, teams do not seem interested in meeting Sandy Alderson’s asking price, considering Colon ‘s $11 million salary in 2015…

7:09 p.m.: “I would say right now there’s a lot less going on than some people speculate,” Sandy Alderson said Thursday, in regards to whether the team might trade Bartolo Colon before the end of the month.

Aug. 28, 6:27 am: The Royals haven’t been in touch with the Mets of late (Heyman, Aug. 27) and the Dodgers are not nearly as interested in acquiring Colon as had been first reported (Gammons, Aug. 28).

The Angels considered trying to trade for Colon, but Los Angeles continues to feel the cost in prospects and salary are too much (Daily News, August 26). Angels owner Arte Moreno doesn’t want to spend beyond the luxury tax, which will limit how much of Colon’s salary his team is willing to take on (Fox Sports, August 27).

The Mets were recently willing to pay up to $2 million of Colon’s 2015 salary in order to help facilitate a deal (Daily News, Aug. 25). However, they are also comfortable keeping him and exploring trades again after the season, since they feel he could have more value this winter when compared to other pitchers on the free agent market (Newsday, Aug. 24).

According to Martino, the Mets hope to acquire a decent return in prospects, as well as salary relief, in any deal for Colon(Daily News, August 26).

In July, prior to the non-waiver trade deadline, the Mets were being offered high-value prospects, but mostly guys in Double-A, according to market insiders (MetsBlog, Aug. 26).

The Pirates, Orioles (CBS Sports, July 31), Blue Jays and Mariners were said to have interest in acquiring Colon at different points earlier this summer.

Ah yes the P word again-Prospects,that's what the Mets do. get prospects and tell the fan base how bright the future is. This is the revolving door of the wait till next year Mets.

The good thing is the fans aren't buying into it and are staying away in droves from Citi file which really is a drag because its such a great ball park

Stand your ground, Sandy, Bartolo can help this young team next year

It seems others GMs still think they can wait out the Mets and get their way.

Nope. Not anymore. Hasn't been that way for years.

I could see the Mets accepting less of a prospect, in the end...but if you go that route, you're paying every penny of the contract. You choose. But that's it.

Sandy and his crew are all about drafts. His free agents signings have been terrible except Byrd and Colon. His first three drafts were high school players. Those players take years to develop. He made trades ie Beltran Dickey and Byrd that anyone of us could have made. I believe there will be a better market for Colon in the offseason. I would not just give him away now just to help a contending team win when I could do that in the offseason to get rid of the salary.

Just saw that Venters tore the UCL again.  Players may start looking at rehab and not surgery if a realistic option.

So Alderson is going to wait until he starts sucking.

Good lord, can we get a GM who isn't in a coma?

Let's all blame TC for how much David and Grandy suck!!!Looks like another top ten pick coming our way. This team is a joke. From the owners to bat boys.

If Sandy thinks that he can get a quality player or prospect for a pricey 42 year old this off season, he is delusional. At the end of the day, he will either keep Colon or trade him for marginal players that will be hyped up to make us feel good about the future.

This is all Collins' fault!! If he would actually teach his players about nutrition, maybe we would be able to get a Stanton for him!! Smh!!

Why did we get him in the first place? To replace Matt Harvey? Okay, makes sense assuming we were going to compete. But who would possibly think that with this team? So instead why not simply have taken his cash, the Grandy money and the CY money and use it to acquire a marquee hitter. That would have at least provided some entertainment instead of us watching game after game a plethora of .200 hitters that makes every 2nd rate pitcher look like Cy Young.

This GM is good for nothing. Throws away good money on Young and it explodes in his face. Then sits on the deadline and says he likes his team. Now he's trying to trade a guy over the hill who he overpaid for and wonders why no one is interested in meeting his price. No wonder this team can't break 75 wins under this incompetent regime.

what I think is more feasible than what I said before that could possibly happen is colon gets dealt to the Dodgers for one of their spare outfielders probably Andre Ethier the Dodgers pay some of the money on the Ethier. Starlin Castro gets traded to the Mets in exchange for Lageres & Montero, that's right the mets Sacrifice lageres this way they don't have to give up any of their big young pictures, Castro id their leadoff hitter and lastly the Mets sign Michael Cuddyer to play left field and put Granderson back in CF.

Usually the norm for the Mets these days...no?

If a team had a chance to sign him this year for $10 million a year without giving up prospects, and didn't do it, why would they now all of a sudden want to give the Mets a player and salary relief for a player one year older?

I know he's had a good track record on these sorts of moves thus far, but I'm starting to get worried Sandy's going to screw this one up.....

A team serious about winning with a payroll as low as the Mets have would eat the money and trade up fro the future.

My guess is that they're not hearing any offers, period. Offensive prospects are becoming rarer and teams are locking up their hitters. every incremental improvement comes at a steep price. My guess is that Colon isn't worth it to other teams, even if the Mets kick in the money, because they don't want to part with precious offense.

Any fifth stater, on any team, who leads their team in wins are lucky to have him--the Mets are very lucky to have Bartolo on this team!

Statistics show that there is a greater chance of Bartolo being hit by Lightening than needing Tommy John surgery. You can look it up!

flmetsfan

The Mets will not get any serious consideration unless they agree to eat about $3 million - $4 million of Colon's contract.  Since this is the case, I expect him to be in the rotation for the Mets on Opening Day 2015.

Umm, half the pitching staff is injured, "unavailable" but not on the DL.  Don't trade Bartolo.  Despite all the "young guns" it's actually shocking how important Colon and Matsizaka were to the pitching staff this year.

@markd i almost feel like Sandy spent money just to say he spent money and to try to take attention off the Wilpons being broke.

The Dodgers wouldn't be interested- their CF of the future is Peterson. Oh, you have him going to the Cubs. I don't like the idea of acquiring Castro

I bet one of Niese or Gee gets traded in the offseason.

@Doubleday

I love your screen name. Those were the days. But If the Mets aren't winning I'd have to wonder how Colon and Dice K could truly be considered "important" to the pitching staff. If you are the Mets you might as well have sacrificed another dozen or so games and have given those innings to 2-4 youngsters

The fact is, he didn't really spend anything. Our payroll is lower than last year. It's like me saying I got a new car when it's 20 years old.

@jaydhn @markd  I actually think that at the time of the Colon signing he was told he had more money to spend, and then the Wilpons changed the budget on him.  Probably wasn't the first time that happened.

anthony G. Decesare

Yup and their not trading wheeler or syndergard either and they would not get anything for gee and Neise either. GREAT! Enjoy Jed Lowrie and Michael Cuddyer on this lousy team next year! Oohhhhhh boyyyyy!!!! Going to get my season tickets now!!!!! Smh

anthony G. Decesare
anthony G. Decesare

first off David Wright is our best all around player he still is it would be nice if they would put a supporting cast an actual strong line up around the guy this way the man could produce

@jaydhn @anthony G. Decesare largares is our best pos player wow this is why met never go any where fans overrate players that didnt even play a season mangement hears that and then they say we like this kid

anthony G. Decesare

I think you trade the guy while his value is at its peak it will never be any higher and get something that you need and avoid trading your young pictures like wheeler and Noah syndergaard

anthony G. Decesare

Juan lageres is way overrated to me he's like a stock that is real high right now trade the stock while it's at its high

anthony G. Decesare
anthony G. Decesare

U can give me your advanced stats all u want... he has 4 hr's 41rbi's a 319 obp and 19 walks....that's awful, his value to this team is his defense, that's it! The guy is not a core player going forward, nor should he be.

Frank Tangorra

Who plays CF? Please don't say den Dekker. Guy cannot hit major league pitching. He is a very good fielder.

anthony G. Decesare

Granderson can play CF, he's been doing it the majority of his career.
