Lannan could pitch out of bullpen

John Lannan could end up in the bullpen if he’s not a starter, Terry Collins said on Wednesday.

He is competing for the fifth rotation spot with Daisuke Matsuzaka and Jenrry Mejia, among others.

Lannan has never pitched in relief in his MLB career and only has a handful of relief appearances in the minor leagues, the most recent coming in 2007.

I can't help but root for Lannan and have always secretly wanted him on the Mets. He went to Siena after all!

Frankly I'm surprised TC wasn't worried about hurting Lannan's feelings.

This is irrelevant to Lannan specifically, but I think Familia may be sent to Vegas to start the year and be the AAA closer. The organization still probably holds him in high regard and he would be able to get the most appearances in AAA than in the big leagues. Help him iron out his control issues, if he does that he can be a dominant closer. I remember the save he had in Atlanta this year where he had everything working especially that nasty curveball.

That being said I would prefer Lannan over Torres as the long man because Lannan has better career numbers in the majors. Given his career stats I think Torres will regress this year.

I don't mind Lannan as the long man in the pen.

No thanks.  We've got better bullpen options than Lannan.

Wouldn't it be easier for TC to tell us who WON'T potentially pitch out of the bullpen?

Did it ever occur to Terry to stop handing out positions until guys earn them?

You from the Albany area? I am. Thought it was cool that Mets signed someone from a school I live twenty minutes Away from.

Agree with some of that but Familia Does NOT need to be saving games at AAA just to accumulate meaningless saves. It's all about his ability and control, if it's there he'll be fine.

Actually, with Lannan giving them a second lefty I could see them dropping Edgin in favor of another righty in Valverde or Farnsworth.

What positions has he handed out?

@Avi Gelboim the way it sounds both valverde AND farnsworth will be going north so it may look like this:

@mets2014 @Avi Gelboim  Take Lannan and drop Torres.  Rice and Lannan or Leathersitch will give us the 2 lefties in the BP that we desperately need.

@mets2014 @Avi Gelboim  I would hate to see them go North with only one righty.  And Torres pitched awfully well last season (1.11 WHIP, 4.4 SO/BB) so I'd hate to see him left out.  So unless both Valverde and Farnsworth look great in spring training I'd be inclined to choose one of the two and send the other to AAA.  Of course an injury to any of these guys and the roster changes.
