John Lannan 2

Lannan added to 40-man roster

John Lannan has been added to the Mets’ 40-man roster.

He is expected to be the second lefty reliever in the bullpen, alongside Scott Rice. He could also be a backup starter (Rohan, March 27).

Lannan has never pitched in relief in his MLB career.

The biggest weakness of this team is the bullcrap pen.... I know the Mets think they can win with the young starters.... BUT.... the bullcrap pen will cost them around 50-60% of their losses..... look at what happened to Harvery.... unless they ALL pitch complete, low scoring games every time out.... well.... de ja vu.... the game will be dumped in the 7 and 8th inning.... I don't think Parnell will be back to his old form until after the All-star break.... which would be OK unless that is too little too late.... the media has not taken this into consideration when they rave about the new young starters.... yes... they hopefully they will be fantastic but the game is 9 innings.... those last 3 innings are going to be brutal.... we cannot count on the offense to help either.... the chances of the Mets scoring a lot of runs and giving these kids a significant lead in each game is slim to none... I will enjoy watching the brilliant pitching for 5-6 innings but I will have to close my eyes and wince once there is the call to the bullcrap pen.... what a shame....

It means that both Edgin and Leathersich (sp?) are overhyped and not ready for prime time.

@mikesml My guess is that he'll be the long man. Torres moves up to 6th-7th inning duty. He's a bit more trustworthy than the likes of Gonzalez Germen.

@mikesml Doesn't really limit flexibility, as a manager is freed up quite a bit in managing a bullpen when he has 2 lefties as compared to only one. Can think back to situations with Feliciano and Byrdak where you had a spot in the 6th or 7th and he struggled with whether or not to bring in the lefty because he was afraid that a bigger spot might arise later in the game. This alleviates that pressure and lets him manage as the game dictates.

@brockl @archer41  I don't recall Edgin being "hyped" at all. When he came up last year he was throwing gas from the left side. He got injured and has never really returned to form since, be it mental or physical, who knows?

Leathersich was turning heads in the minors last season was a given a small chance to show off this spring. He showed that he needs more seasoning in the minors. The guys who've been hyped are Wheeler and Thor.

Let's hope they live up to it one day
