Kirk Nieuwenhuis left Sunday’s game against the Marlins with a bruised left knee.
2:18 pm: Nieuwenhuis told reporters he has a bone bruise in his left knee, and doesn’t expect to miss too much time.
8:50 am: Nieuwenhuis will have an MRI performed on his knee today (Rubin, ESPN New York).
Mar. 3: He was carted off the field after the seventh inning.
Nieuwenhuis is 1-for-18 this Spring.
Michael Baron, MetsBlog.com:
Mar. 3: This is the last thing Nieuwenhuis needed, and really the last thing the team needed as well. The Mets were already forced to get creative in their outfield, and now they could be down one of their options. Hopefully this injury isn’t severe and he can get back on the field over the next week.
I wonder what this means for Matt den Dekker? den Dekker has struggled as well this Spring. He is 2-for-12 with six strikeouts. However, he is probably the next left-handed option in center field. His defense is more than ready for the big leagues. The big question for him is whether his offense will come around. Hopefully some of the pitch tracking Dave Hudgens has him doing in camp will translate into better pitch recognition in games.
