Keith Hernandez will talk to SNY at 5 pm about Mookie’s comments

In his new book, Mookie Wilson says Gary Carter never wanted Keith Hernandez to be named team captain.

“Gary Carter let it be known he felt that Keith was unfit to play the role of captain,” Wilson writes (NY Post, Apr. 25). “Perhaps to appease Carter, the Mets made him co-captain of the team [in 1988].”

Carter died of brain cancer in February 2012.

Hernandez is scheduled to be a call-in guest to SNY’s Daily News Live at 5 pm ET to talk about Wilson’s book and comments.

The guy is apparently a minister. If he's telling the truth, even if just to sell books in light of his limited mets job, it should be fine in America. Doubt he's lying or has an agenda. Mets must want him to sell books too because I wouldn't even of known he wrote a book without the backlash of this controversy, specifically being featured on this site, which the mets endorse and have for quite a while.

Plus nothing he wrote looks that bad yet.

I just have to say that after looking through everything he said and wrote in the New York Post, Mookie has lost all class. How do you say what you say, yet you stay employed with the Mets and take the money? You don't backstab your own teammates and so-called friends. Keith has repeatedly spoken highly of Mookie as a teammate, person and friend, and I've heard him talk about how management back in the day wasn't keen on keeping Mookie around, but Keith vouched for him and told him he was very important to the club. Those are some pretty absurd comments to make, and if we wanted the attention, he certainly got it. It's too bad I missed DNL today, I would've loved to hear Keith talk about this.

Enough about 1986.  The Wilpons should be making amends with the 1969 guys, before they disappear.  We already lost Gil, Tug, Donn Clendennon, Don Cardwell, and Tommie Agee (May they RIP).  Travesty would be not having what's left of that team together as we approach the 50th anniversary of the Miracle Mets team.  Yogi won't be around forever.  As a fan, I want to see Seaver, Koosman, Kranepool, Harrelson, Boswell, Ed Charles, Cleon, Swoboda, Shamsky, Gentry, Grote, Dyer, Pfiel, even Nolan Ryan - THEY are our history.

Call me bitter, but I'm so tired of talking about the 1986 team.  It sucks that it needs to be hung onto because it was the last team the Mets won it all, but I really wish it could be onward and upward.  Obviously Mookie wanted some attention (And to sell books) so he felt the need to make some comments and publish them.  Now we are only fueling the fire by having those "unwelcome 1986 Mets" make comments on it.   The same Mets that have had several Mets sponsored reunions and are always celebrated by the team.

Its all just nonsense to me, and Keith should just keep quiet on something that happened so long ago.  But we all know that won't happen. /rant

Again, society needs to give it up. These athletes are human and not all good ones. I like Hernandez the player on the field, maybe he wasn't a choir boy off. Pay no mind. I  like Mookie, the player on the field. He literally was a choir boy. Nice, more power to him. Tired of trying to study and dissect these guys. Who cares. I'll draw the line at Aaron Hernandez. Could you imagine if the 86 Mets were on Twitter back then. Let's just keep nudging Harvey

I have no illusions about the '86 Mets after reading "the bad guys won" by Mike Lupica. A few of them were choirboys but most were not. I really don't care... they were a great team that won it all...

I think it's a little low of Wilson (and Greedy) to stir up Controversy pitting a guy that is a past and current  face of the team against a guy who can't confirm or deny the claim because he is departed

Just what this team needs. To deal with questions regarding the drama around the 80's Mets. Let's focus on the 2014 Mets shall we?

@metsblog This isn't new to anyone that was around then. There were 2 factions....the Carter guys and the Hernandez guys? So what?

Assuming it's true, why go after someone who died and someone who can eat your lunch everyday that the Mets play baseball!

This did not impact Wilson and he has no reason to let that type of crap become public, especially when Carter is not around to clarify what was meant himself.  Quite frankly, i just lost a lot of respect for Wilson.  No wonder the Mets did not want this dude around anymore.  Are you this hard up for Cash bro?

@Zach Ripple  nothing wrong with stating the truth at this point in his career. pretty sure in these cases its safe to side with the player over the owners. don't be such a loyalist. i can guarantee the wilpons have no loyalty towards you the fan.

@doubleday This is a great idea! As a younger mets fan, 21, I would definitely buy a ticket to get the chance to see all those guys I grew up hearing about. That would be something far more special Free Shirt Friday! Why should the only Old Timers Day be in the Bronx?

At the beginning of "The Bads Guys Won" it is stated that most of the Mets that year were 'vile mfers' ... that certainly set the tone ...

I'd rather have a bunch of intelligent college guys who are good people and really can play the game, but that's not real and 'that's not happening' ...

Oh well ...

Let's go 2014 Mets ... whoever they are!

@drmetfan  Actually I disagree. With all those press corps guys having to write some kinda MetsLOL copy every day, this keeps 'em from evacuating their bladders on the current team ("A scout says d'Arnaud sux LOL"/"Harvey's tweets give the Wilpons conniptions he'll be a Yankee/Dodger soon LOL") for one day.

@helloboy So true. that's the worst part of it. Carters name should NOT be used in any relation to negative comments. Poor guy is not here to speak for himself. This irks me to no end is quite frankly classless by Mookie Wilson. Anybody who knew and watched Gary Carter knew all about his leadership , and he certainly wasn't given a title to appease him.

.@DickYoungsGhost I can’t kill a network for having live shows that talk about the Mets. You want trivia Qs in a bar or a game from 2000?
