Matthew Cerrone, Lead WriterJuan Lagares was the best defensive player in August, according to ESPN’s SweetSpot blog.
“It was well-earned,” said ESPN’s Mark Simon. “Lagares led the majors with 12 defensive runs saved in August. That value came both from his ability to range far outside his position to catch balls and from a throwing arm that has ranked among the best in the sport since his arrival.”
Lagares leads the National League, and ranks second in the majors, in outfield assists with 12.
He has been incredible out there, and yet Matt den Dekker has started five games in center field since joining the team last week. It’s the right move, despite Juan’s skills. Lagares has played right field, den Dekker has not. Den Dekker has been groomed to play center field. However, Lagares also has a superior arm, which is better suited for right field. These two are not projected to be big hitters. However, if the Mets can find more offense on the infield some how, because den Dekker and Lagares have been so good and cover so much ground in the field, Alderson might again be able to think about having an all-hit, no-field left fielder again…
