Juan Lagares 2 (Baron)

Lagares to DL, Nieuwenhuis recalled

8:42 pm:  Mets officially place Juan Lagares on 15-day disabled list with a pulled right hamstring and recall Kirk Nieuwenhuis (Mets, April 15).

Nieuwenhuis, who hit .189 with three home runs and 14 RBIs in 47 games with the Mets last season, will wear number 9 during Tuesday’s game. The 26-year-old was hitting .310 with 10 runs scored, two doubles and eight RBIs in 10 games with the Las Vegas 51s.

7:40 pm:  Sandy Alderson told reporters that Lagares will have an MRI and that there will not be a decision about the DL until Lagares returns from the test (Carig, April 15).

7:21 pm:  Nieuwenhuis will get the start in center (Ackert, April 15).

2:58 pm: Lagares will be placed on the 15-day disabled list before Tuesday night’s game against the D-backs, according to a team source (Newsday, Apr. 15).

12:30 pm: Triple-A OF Nieuwenhuis is on his way to Arizona to be available to the Mets if needed for Tuesday’s game, according to a source (Ehalt, Apr. 15).

6:00 am: Lagares left Monday’s game with a pulled right hamstring, which he injured running to first base on ground ball in the seventh inning.

Lagares later told reporters he felt a pull in his hamstring. However, he’s never injured a hamstring before, so he is not sure how severe it is. The team plans to wait until Tuesday before determining whether Lagares will be put on the disabled list.

Chris Young, who is on a rehab assignment in Vegas, is eligible to be activated from the disabled list Friday, April 18.

What a shame. Juan looked SO GOOD at the plate. Speedy recovery.

Last night's game ended about 10:55pm local time.  at 5:40pm local time Sandy said a decision wouldn't be made until...blah, blah, blah...  and at 6:40 local time they put Lagares on the DL...

That's 19 hours including 10 business hours.  What the hell took so bloody long to do an MRI and discuss the findings?

If a decision will not be made about the DL until after the tests, then who's spot did Nieuwenhius take?

How come the MRI wasn't already done yet. Is he flying to NYC to have it done or something. When is this MRI going to happen ?

On mlb network the ticker at the bottom of the screen reports that multiple unnamed sources :rolls eyes: claim lagares will be placed on the DL. That sucks.

While it sucks to have our best player right now hit the DL, this is in the best interest of everyone. I said last night that at the least he shouldn't see game action until Friday, but this is even smarter. You allow him plenty of rehab time and hopefully avoid any long-term injury. The Mets can't afford to be Lagares-less for two months or so.

We are a TULOW at ss, a Mejia as a closer, and a Backman as manager away from being serious championship contenders.   Make it happen Sandy!

For the next two weeks we are looking at an OF of EY, CY and Grandy-man. Two of these guys are below the Interstate. You add Tejada and TDA to the mix and there is little reason for optimism. Regarding Juan's time on the DL, as they told that kid in Midnight Express, "May it pass quickly."

Why not bring up Abreau? He is a proven hitter with a high OBP.

Of course Legares would go to the DL--he wears a Mets uniform!

Why not bring up den Decker?

Have good news mets fans - parking cheaper then Yankees parking lot - this has been a foxnews alert

Only reason to watch this team right now goes on the DL. This team is so snake bitten.

Bad news - Lagares was arguably the best player through 2.5 weeks - but at least they are putting him on the DL immediately, instead of keeping him around while injured and playing shorthanded for a few days (a la the Jerry Manuel years).

If Granderson is going to be out for a few days, get him on the DL as well.  He won't be missed.

this sucks. Lagares was one of the few reasons I had to watch these Mets

I know these Metsies get tired sometimes (poor babies), so maybe this will give Juan some much-deserved rest, and he'll come off the DL as hot as ever...

Horrible luck for Lagares and the Mets, of course.  It figures.

I sure hope it's not too severe, but at least they're not making the same mistake as last summer with DW.  And as far as that goes, didn't Chris Young go out there too soon with a barking quad and only go on the DL when he further aggravated it?

I've always thought this quotation from DW Last August was a bit of a shocker: "It's just one of those things.  I don't think it could have been prevented, unless the first time you feel it you go directly to the DL.  That's not going to happen. I think that this was inevitable."

Do the players think they're irreplaceable for two weeks?  Does management think they can play with leg injuries?

AND - why are these outfield walls not padded enough to protect the players when they run into them???

Sucks to see Lagares go down, Hoping for a speedy recovery. well here comes Brad Pitt Jr aka Captain K

Yeah Backman is the missing piece. A guy that will bunt just as much as TC.

Great idea.

Who cares what they're batting. Yesterday Duda was struggling, now he's having a good year...it's how it goes.

I'm not sure why people are so quick to dismiss Abreu out of hand.  A career .292/.396/.873 who's currently tearing it up at AAA...i'm sorry the Mets don't have any room for that in their lineup?

TheJMan

And Julio Franco too while they're at it

Who else? Tommy Agee's corpse?

WoodsideNative

@mets1973  Because as we've seen over the recent years they stick with the same players no matter what they have or haven't done in the past. Abreau and a couple of others deserve a chance, even if it's just until the first liners get healthy.  I for one am tired of watching Nieuy get a couple of hits, make a couple of good plays, then K with men in scoring position.

Mickey Jennifer Wind
Mickey Jennifer Wind

@mets1973  they need someone who can play CF.  No Grandy the rest of the series and no CY until friday.  EY in CF is scary.

Mickey Jennifer Wind
Mickey Jennifer Wind

@dabo  because Kirk is killing it right now and den Dekker is not.  Kirk is hitting over 300 with an ops in the 800's.

WoodsideNative

@grillruben  All teams get injuries but I still wonder why it also seems the Mets get more? What kind of trainers and medical staff in on hire here anyway? Judging by the on field talent, wouldn't be surprised if it's second rate also.

Mickey Jennifer Wind
Mickey Jennifer Wind

@Steve  he just got a hit and an rbi hitting against the shift.  at the end of May he will be hitting .240 and his ops will go up 200 points.

@C Nerrie Granderson ran into the unpadded part of the bullpen fence in right field last night.

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@C Nerrie  No player wants to be Wally Pipp'd.  Especially a 25 year old who understands his hold on his starting position, right or WRONG, is tenuous at best.  But the truth is an OFer..especially a CFer with a hamstring pull is nothing more than a DH. The first time in a long time, the Mets made the right decision regarding a player's by DL'ing him..

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@Victor Triguero  I'm not sure he shouldn't have been.  a wrist injury to a hitter??  Ask Jayson Werth how he fared with his wrist injuries....Hopefully they'll make the decision sooner rather than later.

nolrog

@Victor Triguero He still may be.  They are going to wait a couple days, then wait a couple more, then wait a couple more and then DL him the day before he could come back.

Chad Snaider

@Victor Triguero  lol nah, if grandy was the one headed to the dl. and we had juan, eric young and chris young i would be fine with that

Pete Brilvitch
Pete Brilvitch

Just wondering. How would a good medical staff (assuming ours to be incompetent) have prevented either injury?

C Nerrie
C Nerrie

You're being very literal, my friend.  I meant that anything surrounding the field that a player could run into should be adequately padded.

C Nerrie
C Nerrie

@C.K. Dexter Haven @C Nerrie  DW, of course, was in no danger of being Wally Pipp'd.

Lagares was quoted last night as saying he wanted to be cautious with it.  He deserves a lot of credit for being smart. Both he and management deserve credit.
