Jose Valverde

Jose Valverde added to 40-man roster, will fill in for Parnell

The Mets added RHP Jose Valverde to the 40-man roster, the team announced Wednesday, indicating he will be part of the Opening Day bullpen.

The team expects Bobby Parnell to be their closer, though they may limit his appearances early in the season, according to pitching coach Dan Warthen (Carig (Newsday) Mar. 26).

Valverde will likely fill in as closer on days when Parnell is not available, though Warthen acknowledged that Valverde may need time between appearances as well.

No shortstop, no first baseman, no leadoff hitter, no closer.  This season is looking brighter and brighter.  As for Valverde, you knew he was making the team a month ago, when they gave him Andrew Brown's jersey number.  No surprise here.

Does anyone on Metsblog know yet whether Valverde has his splitter back?  Without it, his current success may be temporary.

Reports last year said that his inability to throw the splitter effectively is what caused the Tigers to send him down. So this seems to be crucial!

What could be more fun than a little investigative reporting?

(This was brought up on March 18 on Metsblog by BringBackDaveTelghe and ignored unfortunately.)

-- SB Nation, July 4, 2013: "Valverde used it to great success earlier in his career, a fine complement to his four-seam fastball that fell off the table, got whiffs or ended up being hammered onto the ground.  He'd been using it a bit less over the years, but continued to see results.  Last year the pitches began converging.  No longer did the splitter fall off the table, and batters were teeing up for fly balls more often."

-- "Eye on the Tigers" early last year:"Small samples and it’s still early.  Valverde has thrown a total of 38 pitches in his three appearances; 36 were 4-seam fastballs (94.7%) and only 2 were splitters (5.3%).  Valverde hasn't shown much of anything different so far this year [than what] made him struggle last year, except maybe a few MPH on his fastball in one appearance.  His windup has changed slightly....  The results have been much better, though.  I JUST WONDER HOW MUCH LONGER HE CAN KEEP IT UP, AS MANY PEOPLE THINK THE KEY TO HIS SUCCESS IS THE REJUVENATION OF AN EFFECTIVE SPLITTER."

-- Also reports that he doesn't throw it in cold weather.

Welcome to the Mets Papa Grande! Let's hope you can still perform as you did in your glory days.

So when this team tanks and wins 60 this year. Do you think we will hear rumors of wilpons finally selling, OR god forbid maybe moving team?? Actually leaving NY would be best move for wilpons, they could run a small market teAm and not be bothered. I really feel that mets are one horrific year away from this, and this might be the year. Buffalo Mets? Charlotte Mets? Maybe West Virginia Mets??

Team is a complete and utter disaster. These young kids coming up will have the weight of the world on their shoulders. God bless

Great!  So our two top relievers are not ready to pitch when needed.  Our very fragile opening day starter might be ready by our 5th game.  Which means he's out until the All-Star break.  Our ace is out for the year.  We have a guy playing SS who wouldn't start for the other 29 teams in baseball. In fact he wouldn't make the major league roster for the other 29 teams. And our much talked about first base competition between the 2 dolts, has gotten nowhere because their calves are bothering them.  And to top it all off our Owners are broke and cheap and our manager might be one of the dumbest people in baseball.  That sounds like 90 wins to me.

And we still have tejada as our staring ss.

@doubleday EY or CY will lead off..the concept of a 'leadoff hitter' is overrated..anyone can lead off, all you have to do is bat first...we dont have a 'cleanup hitter' either, but granderson will bat there this year..Flores will be up in a month(id like to see him start on the opening day roster but whatever), Parnell/Valverde is better than anything we've had since k-rod so i'm ok with that, and 1st base you know this was gonna happen since december when they left the winter meetings & nobody would take ike davis...its tough to trade a guy in spring..wait to see if davis or duda gets hot(they wont), and one of them will be moved soon

@Wayno  Well...aren't the Mets going up to Montreal to audition in a few days?  (figured i'd feed the BS? smh)  Bud is stupid, but he will NEVER let NY lose one of it's teams on his watch.

I am very disappointed that nothing has been done to improve the roster. CitiField is going to be a quiet place this April, and the lack of any improvements has really taken away any buzz in this team. And we'll have to hear how the ownership can't improve the team with declining revenue, which won't increase until the roster improves.

@dannym28 You guys are too hung up on Tejada, let it go, he's the SS, deal with it. He's batting 8th in the lineup, if the 7 guys in front of him do what their supposed to do then it doesn't even matter what Tejada does as long as he plays good D.

@C.K. Dexter Haven @Wayno  Warren Cromartie is spearheading a Montreal Baseball Group to bring MLB back to that city.  The games being played there are a result of their work to prove that Montreal is still a great baseball city.  Loria stole their team and moved it to Miami.  I'm rooting for Montreal, but not for the Mets to move there.

Tejada will be fine defensively.  And if he hits .260, then this is all a bunch of crying over nothing.  But all this Tejada talk does have me wondering what is the plan for SS beyond 2014?  Clearly Tejada is not in their long range plans, and Flores?  Not likely.  Tovar?  Or are we gonna get another off season of "well, we're going to improve where we can in FAgency and blah, blah, blah"...I know Yunel and Asdrubel are potential FA's after the season, but...i feel like i've seen THAT movie before.

@hrvwlzthor @dannym28

But Tejada has not been playing good defense. That is what worries so many fans. A no field, no hit shortstop is a major stumbling bloc to becoming a winning team.
