“I want to be here…I love it here. My family is here, I love [living] on Long Island, I want to stay.”
Jose Reyes, as quoted by Andy Martino of the Daily News
According to Martino, both parties have yet to open contract negotiations, but both are interested in securing Reyes beyond 2011, and could engage in talks early in the off-season.
That said, Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York wonders whether or not the Mets should consider trading Reyes this winter, saying “If they think he can play only 120 games of average shortstop, it is hard to justify [his $11 million option for 2011].”
Like I said yesterday, I look at Reyes and can’t think of anyone who I would rather have at shortstop in the years ahead, and I feel the Mets should look to build their roster with as many speed-type guys as they can find, because I think that kind of player plays into Citi Field’s strengths. Despite his recent string of injuries, I feel strongly that Reyes will be back at full strength I hope that strategy starts with securing Reyes long term.
