Jordany Valdespin started in LF on Friday
In yesterday’s 3-2 loss to the Tigers, Jordany Valdespin went 1-for-4 with a go-ahead, solo home run in the seventh inning.
Valdespin started in left field yesterday – it was his first start in the outfield this spring.
Valdespin is hitting .333 with two home runs and four RBI in 24 at-bats so far this spring.
Michael Baron, MetsBlog.com:
The competition in the outfield is no clearer today than it was at the start of camp. But if Valdespin can not only show he can handle any outfield position, but be a more disciplined and professional player all-around, I bet he can be an effective piece in the outfield puzzle. At the very least, he could be a platoon player with someone such as Collin Cowgill or Marlon Byrd, but if he shows he can hit left-handed pitching consistently, perhaps he can get a full stranglehold on one of the outfield spots.Valdespin hit .221 with three extra-base hits in 32 plate appearances against left-handed pitching in 2012.
