Niese told reporters he is excited to receive the honor, but doesn’t want to be viewed as the leader of the staff.

“Obviously, Johan and Marcum do a very good job of that,” Niese explained.

Niese said he will treat the Opening Day start just like any start during the regular season.

As for David Wright being named the team’s captain, Niese said he is very well deserving of the honor.

“[Wright is] the first one here and the last one to leave every day. The things he’s accomplished in his career, there’s no better fit,” Niese said.

This is a well deserved honor. Despite a few hiccups last year – which every pitcher has – Niese was the most dependable starting pitcher the team had last year. He has grown to become a crisp, efficient, steady, reliable and durable member of this starting rotation over the last season, with more room to grow. He has shown the questions about his stamina are a thing of the past after he got through a full season last year – he actually got better as the year progressed and made significant strides to becoming a top-of-the-rotation pitcher.
