In the sixth inning of Wednesday’s game, Jason Heyward was hit in the face with a Jon Niese pitch. Heyward immediately crumpled to the ground, holding his jaw.
The Braves announced that Heyward has a broken jaw, and will miss four to six weeks.
“It was tough. I wanted to elevate a fastball right there, and then it didn’t really slip out of my hands, but it kind of just ran in on him,” Niese said after the game. “Obviously no intent, but I just felt bad. It’s every pitcher and every hitter’s worst nightmare. I just hope he’s OK.”
Following the Heyward hit by pitch, Niese allowed two singles, which plated the Braves first run to tie the game. Atlanta went on to win it in 10 innings.
John Buck, who was catching, said Heyward was spitting up blood when he went down.
“Scary, to be honest,” Buck said, according to Newsday. “You don’t ever want to hit anybody in the head. I saw him spitting blood. That made it even scarier.”
