Jon Niese had a rough night, first start back from DL

Jon Niese returned from the DL on Monday, but allowed four earned runs on 11 hits and two walks in six innings.

The poor outing snapped Niese’s streak of 21 straight starts allowing fewer than four earned runs.

Thanks to the All-Star break, he missed just one start while on the disabled list with a stiff shoulder.

“My arm felt good,” Niese said after Monday’s loss. “I could tell I hadn’t pitched in a while. I left a lot of balls over the plate. I wasn’t very consistent with my delivery. Every mistake I made they got a hit. All in all, the outcome wasn’t what I wanted, but my arm feels good.”

Monday’s poor outing snapped Niese’s streak of 21 straight starts allowing fewer than four earned runs.

Last year, Niese was diagnosed with a partially torn rotator cuff. He underwent two MRI exams in spring training, but both returned negative.

Man, he looked SO rusty, which I guess is understandable since he hasn’t made a start in three weeks. It’s a shame, though, because he was in such an incredible groove prior to having rest forced on him by way of the DL.

Last night, he looked nothing like the pitcher he had been since early May, as he struggled to command his cutter. What’s worse, he clearly had no feel for his curve ball, because he barely threw it. Granted, the M’s are really good hitting team, they grind out at bats very well, but Niese just wasn’t Niese. Hopefully, he shook off dust and will feel more comfortable the next time he takes the mound…

Yo Matt, do you FOLLOW baseball?  You say "granted The M's are a really good hitting team" ! Newsflash. The Mariners suck offensively.  They are dead last in the AL in OBP, and 12 or 13th in virtually every offensive category.  Sorry to wake you.

What am I missing? If a pitcher needs a rehab start, give him one. Don't practice on the Mariners at crunch time.

I think they are idiots for shutting him down for 17 days.

Wonder if he'll get on Met fans for being critical of his crap start vs a terrible offense.

I think all the Mets are having rough nights now.

2015 plan: Bring harvey back, but he'll most likely be "rusty" for the entire season (TJ is a drastic surgery afterall), so Alderson and the Wilponzis will say wait til 2016.

Whatever. The season's over. When do we start the annual Mets fire sale?

A pitcher doesn't want to come out and people blame the manager? Just like they blamed him when he took Gee out after only 81 pitches on May 10. Gee told reporters he felt fine and wanted to stay in. And didn't throw another pitch for two months.

Everyone stop complaining.  Niese is a decent starter.  He was rusty last night.  He'll be fine.

Maybe he needed the DL.  Maybe not.  Who cares, he missed one start and Dice-K pitched well.

His velocity is down this year, but wasn't trending down recently.  It's BEEN down all year.

His last four starts have not been good.  There is a problem with this guy.  His velocity is also down.  Something is not right with his shoulder.

The DREAM is dead! The only thing we can do now is see if the METS can stay out of last place, so sad :{ When will this BS change? Don't tell me Harvey will make a dent in this, he won't. We may win 3 or 4 more games, but, that is it. We need some bats and we need them bad. this is the second year that I have given up and walked away from this team. I wait all winter for this!! WAKE UP and give us a team that can compete and is fun to watch, that is all I want.

I blame Collins for putting Niese on the DL. Especially when Niese didn't want to be in the DL.

Funny, wasn't it only before the break that all of the Mets were having very good nights? FIRE TC!

@theglider Pitchers are like football players with concussions- they always say they're ok.

@Brian Mangan His velocity is trending down since last year.  He's actually down over 1 mph and for a guy who's only 28 that is a red flag.

Oh wow, so you also got your MD too? Good for you.

The radar gun prior to his dl stint certainly suggested something was wrong.
