John Lannan outrighted, Dice-K called up

John Lannan was outrighted and Daisuke Matsuzaka has been called up, the Mets announced.

Dice-K will pitch out of the bullpen. In two starts at Triple-A, Matsuzaka has a 2.25 ERA and 1.083 WHIP over 12 innings. He’s allowed seven hits, walked six and struck out 12.

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

1:27 pm: I wonder if this means Jenrry Mejia’s next start is more in question than the team is leading on? I know they’re saying Dice-K will pitch in relief. But, in the event Mejia can’t go, Matsuzaka can. At the very least, it’s convenient…

As for Lannan, he needed to go. He wasn’t pitching well. I’m all for having a left-handed reliever in the bullpen, but not if he isn’t pitching well in that role. What’s the point? The thing is, LHP Scott Rice hasn’t been very successful either. I suspect we’ll see Josh Edgin at some point sooner than later.

As much sabrmetrics and statistics are glorified in baseball...what happened to just going out with your best guy and having him throw!? Most guys differences in BA vs LHP/RHP isn't that drastic because if it was they wouldn't be everyday major league players. I don't care if the bullpen has a lefty if they all stink! DeGrom might be a righty but his 0.50 ERA in a hitters league down in AAA proves he would be better than rice or Lannan EVEN against lefties. If you put a starter in the bullpen like the cardinals do, they are used to facings guys from both sides anyway.

The depth the Mets have in AAA is going to be crucial this year. Every team has injuries. Having guys ready in AAA or close to ready behind that group. The reinforcements are projected to arrive. Even if the Mets dont win the division, this year is so pivotal. Its time to put up or shut up for everybody involved. I think these sorts of moves are going to happen anytime its needed. If somebody is hurt enough, like Lagares, there's a first wave of guys in AAA who we can call up. Dice-K. Nieuwenhuis. And more behind them. Once they figure out first base, shortstop and see what they have from their star prospect catcher, we can fill in the holes. I'm very anxious to see how this season progresses.

So the Mets have reinvented the idea of the bullpen.  No need to have any serviceable lefties in the pen.

Looks for Dana Everland to get the "old guy" shot if Edgin hasn't found himself yet. Everland has been knocking around a long time was in Spring Training and pitched as well as any down theore but there was no room at the inn.

Out with the old, in with the .....old. Huh? Dice-k deserves a spot on this team though he's pitched great in spring and early so far in Vegas. Good spot starter too. I'd like to see Degrom up here soon. I know you have to have a lefty, but Scott Rice is pitching like Scott Rice.

Lannan might be able to catch on with the Ducks ... Nah, who am I kidding?

I like Dice-K.  He could have taken his Boston millions and gone back to a hero's welcome in Japan, but he is still trying to prove he belongs here.  I admire his fortitude.  When he's been on for us, he's been outstanding.  Now, bring back Pedro Feliciano to be the situational lefty.

I like having Dice-K in the pen....provided he is used properly.

TC should absolute pitch him multiple innings any time he's used and just give him a day or two break between apps.  If we're up 3 or 4 in a game after 6, I have no issue with him taking the reins for the rest of the game.

Matt - For what it's worth Edgin has been just as abominable as Scott Rice has been.  Not sure helps coming from him.

Both Mejia and Colon might miss a start or two. Good move to bring up Dice - K to spot start if need be.

I was rooting for Lannan, but he really looked bad except for his two-inning win appearance. He was used all wrong, but hey - Terry Collins is Terry Collins, right?

Dice-K wasn't all that bad last year. Was 3-3 and had a 1.24 WHIP. His ERA was a little high because he let up a few bad HR's. But overall, respectable spot starter and long man.

So long, John Lannan. Imagine all the people, living life in peace.

mets are doing things reactively not proactive---get rid of alderson and Collins bring up backman---damn dangle davis---call Arizona and angels  shortstop.now.speak to suba-cubs.ill go tomets game if they have a shortstop.lfshold be young---cflagares rf granderson  get rid of brown hes garbage---bring up lagron to showcase.

Who made up the nonsense that Mejia is coming out of the rotation? That's not happening. Some people can't get it through their heads that they want someone who is stretched out in case Colon or Mejia have to miss a start. And cry as much as you want, but they aren't bringing Montero or Syndergaard up before their Super 2 status passes. That's just the way it is.

Mejia is a starter--end of story, but if he misses a start, then it's a good move to bring Dice-K to fill in the bullpen or pitch one start for Mejia if his blister becomes a problem.

I dont understand what TC and some of you fans in here see special about boring washed up Dice K.... This is ridiculous, IDK how Mejia doesn't deserve the 5th spot, The only way I see bumping Mejia out the rotation is if Montero and Noah was up here already not for old man Dice K

Not sure why you singled out Mejia when both he and Colon have some nagging injuries.

mejia as long man in the bullpen is pointless. We already have Germen and Torres and they're pretty awesome.

I'll say this IF the Mets do the right thing we  could have a good team going forward for 2014 and maybe contending for a playoff birth.

I'd rather have called up Gorski from AA, but I understand why they need to use these guys who can opt out of contracts, or whatever, over guys in AA who aren't on the 40 man roster. But I'd like to see Gorski get a shot at some point, as a reliever.

ANyone in here thinks Dice K is ok for the 5th spot over a young arm in Mejia is completely clueless and retarded

Couldn't agree more! Big reason why I think mets are going 81-81 this year. Most years the mets get worse at the second half of the season. This season I say they improve the second half. Young guys will be getting better, and all the mets have is young powerful arms ready to come up when someone gets hurt which is a HUGE advantage for a team. Only bad thing is if wright is injured significantly the team has zero chance. The rest of the spots in the lineup are not great but most will be serviceable this year (albeit SS,), 1B may be a mess to but at least Satin Duda Davis all have positives at times. I think Puello will be the biggest supprise of the second half. If anyone struggles or is injured and he is raking in AAA he could be electrifying. Honestly reminds me a lot of a poor man Puig.

@rico German has looked pretty good against both lefties and righties. He could be an answer, only time will tell...

Dice K and Carlos Toress equals like 12 innings that can be eaten in a game and quality as well. Great long relievers and spot starters to have. If they play well enough all season possibly one of them can be dealt to a contender in need of a quality bullpen Long reliever. Because when all these young guys come up some will have to be in the pen. There are 12/13 pitchers on the mlb active roster and about at least 20 quality guys who will battle throughout this season still someone has to go.

@stemog  read between the lines! Mejia will not be in the starting rotation anymore especially if Dice K has a good outing

Tom Gallagher
Tom Gallagher

@ponzies86 He might have to for a start or two due to Mejia's blister. Nobody is suggesting it would be long term (especially after his performance last night).

1harris1

I doubt that Dice K is replacing Mejia long term in the starting rotation. If they really wanted to do that, they could have just started the season with Dice K in the rotation.

Perhaps it's just a contractual thing with Dice K. Truth be told, even though he's not a reliever per se , "boring washed up Dice K" is still better than boring washed up Lannan.

ponzies86

@Max Blay  Agreed, this is another way of kicking Mejia in the A$s and giving his spot to washed up Dice K

hankypanky

Mejia's blister has been described as serious. Would you have him pitch on a regular basis even though it could worsen and alter his mechanics?

Matsuzaka is the logica l choice for replacement until the blister heals.

stemog
stemog

@ponzies86 @stemogAnd what will be your complaint if Dice-K does pitch OK and then goes back to the bullpen after his spot start?

hankypanky
hankypanky

Speaking of reading between the lines, you need new glasses if you think Mejia should risk changing his mechanics because of a severe blister. Not all blister injuries are the same. Some have come close to ending careers.

fatherflot

@hankypanky Exactly.  The level of irrational paranoia around here is unbearable.  Nobody "hates" good young players and is scheming to deny them opportunities, be it Lagares or Mejia.  You may not agree with specific decisions, but it's crazy to think that the organization is deliberately undermining or destroying the most valuable assets it has built up over the past few years----good, young, cheap, homegrown talent!  Dice K is not here to "replace" Mejia.  He's an insurance plan so a good young arm doesn't have to be thrown out there in a situation that can hurt him.
