Johan Santana’s shoulder surgery was successful

Johan Santana polaroidThe Mets announced Johan Santana underwent successful surgery to repair the anterior capsule in his left shoulder at the Hospital for Special Surgery this morning. He will remain in the hospital overnight.

Santana was diagnosed with a probable re-tear of his capsule after undergoing an MRI last Wednesday. He is expected to miss the entire 2013 season.

Santana will earn $25.5 million in the final year of a six-year, $137.5 million contract he signed before the 2008 season. The Mets will also be responsible for paying the $5.5 million buyout of his 2014 option.
