Johan Santana's Elbow Isn't Fully Recovered from Surgery

According to the Daily News, Johan Santana’s hasn’t fully recovered from last year’s operation to clean up bone chips in his elbow.

…i’m not surprised at all by this…his velocity just isn’t where it was, and there are times, especially lately, when he’s lacked command of his change-up, floating it in the middle of the strike zone…

Santana told the News:

“After the last surgery I am still recovering from it…Having bone chips in my elbow changed my mechanics a little bit. But I feel much better now…I am making progress and I’m adjusting.”

…i don’t know if he’s in any pain, but from what i understand of this kind of surgery, it’s a matter of gaining back full strength in the triceps and forearm…his issues with velocity don’t concern me as much as having consistent command does…he could throw his fastball 97 mph and have a deadly changeup, but if he hangs either one of them, it doesn’t matter how fast or slow the pitch is…it’s all about command and speed differential…

Santana is confident he will soon regain the velocity he had prior to the injury, as he said it took him a while after having elbow surgery prior to the 2004 season to regain his form.

…the difference now is he’s six years older, so i have to believe a return to form is a little less certain…nevertheless, outside of two or three innings this season, Santana has been phenomenal, as it appears he’s made a fine adjustment to the lack of velocity…

Santana will be making his first start against the Twins today since being dealt to the Mets in February, 2008.

I hope you don't get paid to write this stuff.  The round 3 pick makes sense, but the other two are ridiculous.  I take Donald in Round 1 (even if they sign Williams).  The need an inside pass rusher and Jenkins is getting old, Peterson is already old and Kuhn is just a guy.  Hankins will take Joseph's place as run stopper and with Donald they will have a good DT nucleus for a long time.

Is this a Joke? These are TERRIBLE picks! Who on gods green earth drafts a BACKUP safety in the FIRST round? The Giants MUST draft a TE or OT in the first round, They already have plenty of people who can play Safety, thats why they got rid of Brown, who was pretty good... In the Second round they should go for a WR, DT or LB... Anything outside that is a terrible pick.

This is my prediction...1st Round  Taylor Lewan...2nd Round Jace Amaro...3rd Round Brandon Coleman....Taylor Lewan improves our line (enough said)...Jace Amaro can catch and block and should be there (gives eli a nice safety blanket)...Brandon Coleman is 6'6" who runs a 4.56 40 and is a high character guy (team captain at rutgers)

They will sign Kevin Williams and draft defensively from Rounds 4-7

I have been writing letters to the giants organization for years right before the draft to "Draft the best available player at all costs"  They seem to draft for needs as most teams do and that is the wrong attitude to take.

John Fennelly......sorry to say you are wrong on all accounts. The giants will draft a wide out in the first round; OT in the second; DE in the third round.

John,

All of your selections are quality prospects and if the Giants did indeed select them, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Reese does love his CB/S on draft day as he has drafted more secondary prospects early than any other position. This years draft is deep and if Reese does his homework (which he usually does) the Giants should draft quality in every round. I will be submitting my Giants mock draft shortly and hopefully I can predict as least 1 round correctly. Great article.

Out of the 6 best players available when we pick, I would be surprised if Reese takes HaHa. The value isn't there for the pick. He might be the best safety in this draft, but I actually think the drop off isn't as large as say T or DT (the difference from Lewan to Martin is a lot bigger than you would think).

I know its hard to compare players, but Kenny Phillips on paper was a better prospect than HaHa. When healthy Phillips was a monster, but I think the FO might still have a bitter taste left from drafting a safety with knee issues so high (again).

I wouldn't be upset if we took HaHa, BUT that depends on who is still available. We spent a lot of money to improve our secondary, it's time to focus on the trenches.

How can the writer say we will pick a safety. Our defensive backfield is our strongest positions(See DCR ,ThurmondAnd S.Brown additions as free agents.)

given the fact you have an owner who pretty much mandated the offense be augmented and a general manager who may be on his last legs, i'd be shocked if the first pick is playing defence. mara also pretty much made it clear he'd like to see players that aren't made to serve long apprenticeships before they are allowed to contribute substantially. that being said, whoever is getting picked has to be ready for serious game action early in their rookie year.

I really hope we don't draft Clinton-Dix, not because he isn't a good player, but after hearing rumors of studs like Lewan, Donald, Evans and Ebron etc for weeks now ..I just feel like I would be disappointed with this pick. I realize we might not resign Rolle next year, but I think we can sign a veteran Safety through Free agency next year...or find one in the draft in a later round this year. Just say No No to Ha Ha!

Round 1 - North Carolina TE Eric Ebron - gives Eli a tremendous offensive weapon... Best TE in college football. We also have a weak group of Tight Ends. He can jump right in and be a starter. Best Pick. Period.

Round 2 - Colorado State C Weston Richburg. Our Starting Center has not played in a football game in a year and a half. After JD Walton we don't have another Center on the roster. So Walton gets hurt again... WE HAVE NO CENTER. Best Pick. Period.

Round 3 - Best DT available.

Giants go this route... We are looking at a playoff team.

I am not buying the HA-HA pick in fact I think there will be a lot of laughing if that selection is made.  Honestly this is the type of selection that has gotten the giants in trouble because this is a future selection and not a now selection.  This team is not good meaning they don't have another year to wait and see if their 12 th pick is good.

Right now we have a solid Safety core Will, Rolle, Brown all starters and you got Cooper whom they like as well.  With Will and Rolle Starting where does Ha-Ha fit? What we are going to wait a year until Rolle is gone?  We need production from the 1st pick this year.

That is why if all else fails you take Zach Martin or id even reach for Kelvin Benjamin.

Mr.F--

1st. Ha-Ha,

the VALUE is there, the need is there... but,

REESE doesn't have ANY DESIRE for Secondary Depth !!!

REESE's Dream 1st Pick = DT A. Donald,

REESE's Need & Value, 1st Pick = OT Lewan

2nd. OT, Protect ELI, GREAT... OT J.James is a REACH at #43....

3rd. C- M.Martin, Protect ELI, Build Chemistry and Sure-Up the Heart of the O-Line for Years... I'm ALL for it...

But, i think C M.Martin is Gone in the Late 2nd....

1st. S- Ha-Ha

2nd. C- M. Martin

3rd. OT- J.James / BAP - OT

IMO, would be Your Best BET..

You Get the #1 Safety & the #1 Center....

and a Late 2nd to Early 3rd OT....

Clinton-Dix has all the tools needed to step in and contribute day 1, but i wouldn't be shocked if he's long gone by 12, Minnesota, Detroit and Oakland all could use safety help and if St. Louis really wants to move outta 2 they could be in play for him as well.

@greekgod  You are Joking right? When a team drafts BPA its not the BEST player left on the board... its the best player left on their Draft board... They pick what positions need to be filled, and if they find a player in their board that FILLS A NEED they draft it. There is no point in drafting a player who does not fit in your teams philosophy or does not fill in a team need. Thats why teams with franchise QBs dont draft QBs with their first pick.

philj

@greekgod  I only think they go WR in first round if Lewan isn't there and Evans is

John Fennelly
John Fennelly

@bockers  Rule No. 1....if you are drafting to fill this season's needs, you're going to be a losing organization. That never works. But you can draft for depth at positions you will be needing. If the player wins a starting position as a rookie, it's a bonus.

No one has seen Stevie Brown run yet, and Will Hill may find himself suspended again.  The Giants may also be done with Antrel after this season...HaHa becomes the main guy. A Pro Bowl guy, too.

mcfly

The problem with that is TC. He does not like playing rookies right out of the gate. Mara would have to put some heavy pressure on TC for that to ever happen.

The biggest thing we as Giants fans have to root for is that the Top 3 QBs go in the Top 10. Otherwise we miss out. I don't think if one Top 3 QBs is on the board that there will be good value with another team looking to trade up.

Hoping Lewan is there when we pick as he would be the perfect combination of BPA & need.

Matthew Cohen
Matthew Cohen

@fast_eddie Dix would not help much in 2014.  The point is that Lewan, Donald and Evans could be gone and Ebron is a tight end who might get 800 yards in the Giants offense - that's what Mario Manningham can do.  Why waste a 12th pick on that?

Dix would be a great help in 2015-2018 if he pans out.  And free safeties are important.  Ask the Seahawks.

Brian Bannon

@jaymanjay How is a safety that is a liability off the field, one that just had major knee surgery and a guy in the final year of his contract and in his 30's solid?

Matthew Cohen
Matthew Cohen

@Skookaloop The Big 9 the Giants want could all be gone at 12 if only 2 QBs are picked 1-11.

3 tackles

2 WRs

Clowney

Donald

Barr, Mack

Dix is not an unreasonable pick if this is the case.

John is correct that the secondary after 2014 has very few signed players.

Skookaloop

@John Fennelly @bockers

Rule#1, Tell that to:

QB Luck

QB RGFizzle

LB Luke uechly

OT DJ Fluker

DT Sheldon Richardson

S Kenny Vaccaro

LB KiKo Alonso

OT JUSTIN PUGH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it's when you REACH for need, Problems arise like:

RB David Wilson

DE JPP

QB R, Nassib

WR R. Barden....

also,  LiL'Quick to call HA-HA, a ProBowler....

fast_eddie

@Matthew Cohen @fast_eddie

Some of your your points are valid - sort of - its just that I personally would be looking for a guy that can help THIS year. And if we can't get Donald I would like to go offense if possible. Mario Manningham is a WR and Ebron is a TE so I don't know what you were getting at there. Two completely different positions and two completely different players. Eli still is needs a pass catching TE and Ebron fits the bill perfectly. Again, Ebron is only my fourth choice if the other are gone. Also, the Seahawks found most of their secondary in the later rounds so they will be available to us later as well. Whatever way we go, we are going to get a very good player at #12. We have to nail that pick with a pro player not a project. JPP types need not apply...

Michael Frias
Michael Frias

@rico @Brian Bannon I really REALLY hope this is a joke.  If Reese could flip, a 1st year, 4th round QB, that didn't dress at all last season for a 2nd and 3rd rounder, he should be negotiating Universal Peace Treaties, not NFL contracts.

jm88
jm88

@Skookaloop  JPP is a reach??  On what planet?  Nassib was not a need pick  and what problems are you referring to with this pick)  When they took Barden they already drafted Nicks in round 1, so it wasn't a need pick either.

Matthew Cohen
Matthew Cohen

@fast_eddie My point is that Ebron is a tight end who can't block very well.  His primary use will be as a receiver.  Only 1 of the top 20 receivers in 2013 by yards caught was a tight end.  If you want a receiver, draft a wide receiver.

espirence

@Michael Frias @rico@Brian Bannon

Here's a possibility We use Nassib to trade up in the 1st round, Many people felt if Nassib stayed this year he would be the top rated QB. So a QB needy team could swap No1's with us and still get their QB.

Hmmmm it's a possibility
