Johan Santana 1 (Baron)

Johan Santana signs one-year deal with Orioles

11:20 am: The Orioles and free-agent LHP Johan Santana have agreed to a minor-league deal that could be worth up to $3 million (Heyman, Mar. 4).

Mar. 3: The Orioles and Santana are close to agreeing on a minor-league deal (Kubatko).

He could end up being used as a left-handed reliever (Ghiroli, Mar. 3).

The Mets did not send a scout to see Santana’s audition in Florida last week, during which he hit just 81 mph with his fastball (Newsday, Feb. 24)…

It was reported in late January that the Mets were done adding to their starting rotation, according to people with direct knowledge of the team’s thinking (Martino, Jan. 27).

This offseason, the Mets signed Bartolo Colon and added Daisuke Matsuzaka and John Lannan to compete with Jenrry Mejia and other young pitchers for the final spot in the rotation. Sandy Alderson had reportedly shown interest in Santana (Lennon, Dec. 10) earlier in the off season.

With what the Orioles paid him, the Mets could've too.  Two million to make the team, plus an additional five million incentives to a guy who gives 100% every single time he takes the mound, makes it worthwhile.  We need a fifth starter, plus he's a veteran with tremendous work ethic that hopefully will rub off on the young prospects.  No wonder Terry put Zack Wheeler's locker between Johan and Matt Harvey in Spring 2013, hoping Santana's professional would serve as a good example to Wheeler.  Yeah, he was hurt a lot, but if anyone can make it back from TWO shoulder capsule surgeries, Johan can.  Love the guy!

$140 million for a no hitter, no thank you. Bye bye Johan!

I remember seeing Santana's debut in Port St. Lucie in '08.  There was so much enthusiasm about the Mets back then, it's amazing how things have regressed.

God bless him.  I wish him only the best.  Just watched on You Tube the final outs of the no-hitter for, oh, about the 250 time.  That was a special night that came out of nowhere.  Pure magic.  You can build games up to the sky, and then something like that falls into your lap out of nowhere on June 1.  I still get goosebumps and get choked up every time I watched it.  I felt like a 500 pound albatross was lifted off the franchise that night.  My sons were very amused to see me welling with tears of joy that night.  Saw my life, and life as a Mets fan, flash before my eyes that night.  My grandmother who took me to my first game in 1968 would have enjoyed it too.  As well as a good friend lost on 9-11 who was a huge Mets fan.  I usually hate crowd shots at sporting events but the shots of people in the stands that night were just incredible.

Thanks Johan for something very very special.

Now back to our regularly scheduled gloom and doom.

Only gripe I have with him, is if something criminal happened on that golf course. If not, my apologizes, and I have no complaints with the job he did for us in uniform.

Report that he might make it as a lefthanded reliever.  That would make sense since he is lefty.

Shame that one of the best pitchers of a generation is reduced to maybe making a team's bullpen because of injuries.

Last report I read said the guy had NOTHING. You can only get-away with guile for so long. I wish him well--especially against the Yankees.

Sort of surprised after last week audition he would of been signed so fast to any contract. But i am happy for him. Baltimore is a good situation for him. Out of the pressure while he builds back his shoulder. Best of luck Johan i am pulling for you. Not the O's just for Santana.

He's not a met so who the fugg cares? It figures he throws the only no-hitter in mets history...and it was bogus. Cant wait till a real met pitcher throws a legit one so we can forget about the asterisk one. I cant blame him for his injuries and I know he competed his rear off when he was healthy but regardless, he was probably the worst signing in the history of the franchise.

All the best to him, but I'll be shocked if he ever throws a pitch in a major league game again. His stuff was eroding big time towards the end, if he can only get it to 81 he had no chance to be successful.

The man is a true gamer. I was lucky enough to be in attendance for that final win at Shea in 08' and was screaming and jumping up and down like a little girl when he finished off his no-no with a K of David Freeze. He is still my favorite pitcher. I have yet to see someone steal the show like only Johan could. I hope that someday one of our young up-and-comers will replace him as my favorite, but that is a tall order. Best of luck Johan! I hope you have a strong finish to an amazing career.

johan is a picther who definitely relies on speed differential to get hitters out, with an 81mph fast ball, his change up would have to be upper 60s to low 70s to create differential, i dont see how he could be effective...however, Johan is a lot like Pedro Martinez and if anyone can figure out how to get hitters out with C-grade stuff, it's Johan

Best of luck Santana! When you were healthy, you were one of the best pitchers in the game with the Mets. Mets first no-hitter and almost single handily carried us into the play-offs in 08 (cursed bullpen!).

@Which One's Pink I was there that night, at Citi Field, having decided to go after work.  It truly was magical and since I've been a Mets fan since 1970, believe me when I say there were tears running down my cheeks.  Unbelievable -- you can't plan something like that.  It's being in the right place at the right time.  And no one deserved it more than Johan Santana.

@cmetsfan There were never any charges brought against him.  Consensual sex with a woman who may have regretted it later, but still wanted to get paid.

@chez1er It would be pretty shocking if he made it as a right-handed reliever!  It would be like Rocky II.

@yankeehater Not hardly the worst signing in the history of the franchise.  He was out 2 seasons due to a major injury, but always gave 100% every single time he took the mound.  Oliver Perez, Luis Castillo, Jason Bay -- just to name a few of what can be labeled "the worst signing in the history of the franchise."

MetsOregon
MetsOregon

@yankeehaterI'd put Oliver Perez, Bobby Bonilla, Jason Bay, Mo Vaughn, and Luis Castillo well ahead of Santana in the category of "worst signing[s] in the history of the franchise". There are probably more ahead of Santana, I just can't think of them off the top of my head. I might even add Beltran ahead of Santana.

@yankeehater  Worst signing in the history of the Franchise?  Are you only 8 years old so you just don't know about all our terrible signings?  (Of course Bay and Ollie Perez would both be in that window and were much worse anyway).  He had a few good years for us and if doesn't end the way it does in 2008 our opinions of Johan (and Beltran) would be a lot different.

But to me Johan isn't even in the top 10 bad contracts for this franchise, most of that list for me would come from the most expensive bad team ever in the early 90s (led by Bonilla and Coleman), followed by some gems from Steve Philips reign and then the aforementioned Bay/Ollie Perez contracts before I would get anywhere near Johan.

@yankeehater  There's no asterisk as far as I'm concerned. Official scoring is what matters.

@yankeehater  bay? id rather pay for someone who couldnt play due to injury from playing then pay someone who flat out couldnt play....

You don't remember 08? Johan probably destroyed his future, but he pitched one of best seasons I've ever seen as a mets fan to ZERO run support and ZERO bullpen help.

I'll forever be thankful for johan, not only for the no-no but also because of just how professional he is.

@7up17togo 2nd to last day of '08 too, came in on 3 days rest and pitched a complete game shutout to keep us in playoff position...only for Glavine to blow it all away in the first inning of the last game

I always wondered if he had the greatest publicist ever. That story came and went and was never mentioned again.
