Jeurys Familia is close to being the next closer

Terry Collins is close to making Jeurys Familia the team’s closer, he told reporters after Sunday’s win.

Familia, 24, has allowed just one run and four hits in his last nine appearances.

“Three days in a row, pounding the strike zone, throwing his breaking ball for strikes, the confidence is really mounting on him,” Collins said (ESPN, May 11). “Yeah, he’s real close.”

Bobby Parnell, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Kyle Farnsworth, Jose Valverde and Carlos Torres all have at least one save this season.

Familia closing.....Getting a little excited about 97-98 down at the shins. Control is the issue....He could be the future....Lets Go Mets.........

Bobby Parnell does not have a save this season. He had a save opportunity, but blew it on opening day and re-aggravated his injury in the process, which is why he's out for the year.

I worry about Familia's control as a closer..I think he might become a little too hyped up and start overthrowing, it took Parnell years to keep his composure and learn you don't need to throw 98mph every time. I would prefer they start using in more high-pressure situations slowly not just thrust him into the role. But with that said, our other options don't look as appealing and maybe he runs away with the job and we're set at closers for the next few seasons..

CORRECTION: Bobby Parnell does not have a save this year. He blew the save on opening day then had TJ surgery.

He's clearly got the stuff but obviously the terrifying thing about Familia is the control. I think we can all see him being dominant for a stretch but I also think we can see him going all Carlos Marmol on us. I'll try and be optimistic. See here is a smiley face. :)

hope they don't rush him into it to be honest. would like to see him stay in this role for the majority of the season and then possibly ease into closer later in the year. only problem is, they don't have anyone else that seems like closer material until then.

do we have a closer?  Didn't I read the Mets have something like 19 different guys with at least one save since 2011?

Oh well. Another pitcher who's arm will fall off due to TC's overuse. But wait. The Mets rarely have a lead going into the 9th so his arm will be safe. (sarcasm.)

17 innings, 8 walks...it is the most logical move as long as TC keeps his Mariano Rivera comparisons to himself. Jeurys has great stuff and adding Mejia should improve the pen.

I believe you are mistaken. Bobby Parnell does NOT have a save this season,

I don't mind this - who's your #5 starter?  Montero I guess?

@dave42I think De Grom is closer to the majors than Montero. We'll probably see Montero  in the late Summer or as a September call up.
