Triple-A RHP Rafael Montero will be promoted and start Wednesday, pushing Jenrry Mejia to the bullpen, GM Sandy Alderson said Monday.
Montero, 23, is 4-1 with a 3.67 ERA and 1.152 WHIP in Las Vegas this season. He has made eight starts and pitched 41 2/3 innings. He’s only pitched into the seventh inning once this season.
“We think he’s ready now,” Alderson said.
Montero will be capped at 180 innings this season, meaning he has 140 innings left to go (Diamond, May 12).
Alderson also said RHP prospect Jacob deGrom could join the team soon, and would pitch out of the bullpen.
Michael Baron, ContributorBy calling up Montero, and their disregard of his Super Two status, it shows they’re putting winning first by using the best available option. This really represents the paradigm shift the organization has been touting since the off-season. It’s how a 90-win team rolls, whether they achieve that goal or not. It’s important to show the players, fans and industry they’re trying to win.
