Montero

Rafael Montero will be promoted and start Wednesday

Triple-A RHP Rafael Montero will be promoted and start Wednesday, pushing Jenrry Mejia to the bullpen, GM Sandy Alderson said Monday.

Montero, 23, is 4-1 with a 3.67 ERA and 1.152 WHIP in Las Vegas this season. He has made eight starts and pitched 41 2/3 innings. He’s only pitched into the seventh inning once this season.

“We think he’s ready now,” Alderson said.

Montero will be capped at 180 innings this season, meaning he has 140 innings left to go (Diamond, May 12).

Alderson also said RHP prospect Jacob deGrom could join the team soon, and would pitch out of the bullpen.

By calling up Montero, and their disregard of his Super Two status, it shows they’re putting winning first by using the best available option. This really represents the paradigm shift the organization has been touting since the off-season. It’s how a 90-win team rolls, whether they achieve that goal or not. It’s important to show the players, fans and industry they’re trying to win.

ifColoN ha s one more adding like this he should be out of the rotation with Jacob taking his Spot. they should also release Val Verde and Farnsworth

and bring up Vick black. If they do those things I will know they are serious and I will take out my wallet.

They should jus trade Mejia before they once again destroy him.

Why the hell not? I was half-afraid they were gonna re-sign Miguel Batista. I look forward to watching the young man pitch. It's beginning to look a lot like 1968.

In a perfect world Montero would make his major league debut on the road and not at home and not against a major rival, but hey, ...the time to compete is now! This move shows they're not going to let another season fizzle away. Good!~

Jose Fernandez to DL for Marlins, undergoing MRI in Los Angeles. It's astounding the number of injuries happening to pitchers these days. But that is obviously a huge loss for them if he's got a major injury.

I think Montero and deGrom were both excelling in Triple A... its time to see what they got, do we keep em trade em etc... I believe....

I love this move!!! Mejia, whether he likes it or not is better suited for the bullpen. Hopefully, he will be the Mets closer in the near future. As for the team trying to win this year, we need hitters. Addressing the bullpen issue with Mejia and soon, Degrom is a start.

Starlin castro would look good in  a Mets uniform..don't know exactly what the Cubs would want for him though.

Will Metsblog do a post on all Mets employees being banned from going on WFAN?  The team comes off like petty babies right now.

@Joe Wenzel  completely agree. I don't think you are going to see a string of uninterrupted service time.  Not that kind of prospect.

It's easy to say that after today, but Colon is plenty capable of going on a run and increasing his value..

Too many pre-teenage boys throwing curveballs before their arms have physically developed and not resting during an off season equals major arm trouble in their early 20's or mid-20s. That's the theory, I'd love to see someone track this with statistics.

@golfpro Black is doing well too, wouldn't be surprised if Rice (If he doesn't start getting people out) and the 2 old guys are gone before the summer.

No they would go for matz neise plawecki and Vaughn which is probably an over pay

@nyjnym Valverde has no options.  He would probably be DFA'd which would give him the option to report to Las Vegas or to sign with another team.

He does look like the guy without a proverbial seat when the music stops.  However, Gonzalez German does have options left (and still has a few control issues).  My feeling is that it will be Valverde since Collins referred to German by a nickname in his post game presser yesterday.  Seems like he's taken a liking to him.

You mean it doesn't bug you just a little bit when obnoxious pompous know it all  Yankee fans mouth off against the Mets? Really?

@Jerry Colfer @Andrew SodergrenAnd he seems like a really good kid. Always stays in the dugout after he comes out of the game, and even on games he doesn't pitch, he's truly into every pitch, cheering fervently for his teammates. Really enjoy watching him play.

I never root for an injury, I'd rather my team beats a fully healthy opponent, but my guess is no one from another team cried over Harvey going down for the year.

@Zac Tindall  yes, let's go to an 8 or 9  man rotation!  it has been known for a while that you will see a bunch of these guys appear out of the pen also.

Albert E Lewis

@golfpro @Albert E Lewis They also have SS Arimendy alcantara in AAA along with Baez also..Alcantara had some good hitting stats in AA ball  last year..and is hitting well this year in AAA.

Andrew Sodergren
Andrew Sodergren

@flmetsfan @nyjnymThey could also put Germen on the DL. Supposedly, he's very sick and may need a hospital visit. There is precedent here, as the Rockies put both Josh Rutledge and Wilin Rosario on DL recently with viral infections.

crafalko17
crafalko17

@flmetsfan @nyjnymGerman has also been solid out of the bullpen. Black will be called up pretty soon too. Rice feels useless as he can't throw strikes with his sinker.

Try selling that one to fans in the Bronx and Boston. Don't think you'd get very far.

Andrew Sodergren

@SuperDuper @hankincoloI agree. With so many kids playing travel ball in the summer at early ages, there are more innings being thrown at a younger age than ever before. Simply seeing arms break down earlier than they may have in the past because of it. Or at least that's the theory I subscribe to.

hankincolo

Yes, we know, but no one is going to throw underhand like in the 1860s, other than the occasional submariner.

crafalko17

@golfpro @crafalko17I can't imagine the Mets not being creative in the trade market, the issue is what is available and how much will he have to give up. If our young guys all pitch well in the majors, their value will go up and we'll have to give up less to get real impact talent.

crafalko17
crafalko17

@golfpro @crafalko17Dice-K/Torres doing well out there too. Who knows maybe it will turn into a strength for us in the next month rather than costing us runs.

Mickey Jennifer Wind
Mickey Jennifer Wind

@crafalko17 @flmetsfan @nyjnym  what i do not understand is that a dozen or more HP have been DFA or put to waivers to clear spots for people on other teams and Mets claimed nobody... someody has to be better than Rice!

crafalko17
crafalko17

@flmetsfan @crafalko17@nyjnymI see what you are getting at, but currently he is a lefty that can't get anyone out, lefty or righty, which feels pretty useless. He almost always walks the first batter he faces and has a 5+ ERA facing essentially only LH batters.
