Jenrry Mejia says the Mets will make the postseason

Mets closer Jenrry Mejia believes the Mets are going to make the playoffs, despite being five games under .500 and seven losses back of a playoff spot with 67 games left to play.

“We’re gonna make it, because we believe in ourselves,” Mejia said before leaving for San Diego to start the second half of the season.. “We’re gonna make the playoffs, we’re gonna be there.”

“The second Wild Card  team helps a lot,” added Eric Campbell. “I mean, even if you’re five or six games back, you’re close.”

I don't mind if the players believe...I don't mind if other fans believe. Show me.

Only 7 out of the WC with 67 to play. Very possible, but not the message I want from Mejia unless he makes a huge contribution. #LGM

Burn in hell Nicholas Burns. He's still a Met and a human being. Unlike you, you ignorant piece of slime. Give these kids a lot of credit for abandoning their homes and culture in pursuit of their dreams.

I got to be honest, I don't see why this is OK, but Sandy saying they could win 90 in the offseason got so much backlash. They were both equally preposterous predictions imo....In fact, this one may be even more far-fetched when you factor in that Mejia knows they're 5 games under and 7 games out of both the division and wildcard, with 3 and 4 teams between them (respectively). At least their record was .500 and they were still tied for first with every other team in the league/division when Sandy made his prediction.....

Personally, the goal should be to build momentum to take into next season. Playoff appearance? Absolutely tremendous, yet unlikely. For this group of young players, they should focus on playing a consistent brand of solid baseball to give them confidence and a winning attitude heading into 2015. The continued development of young talent, addition of Harvey and a power bat, all accompanied by a confidence of playing solid baseball for the final 12 weeks should equal a playoff appearance in 2015. As fans, this should be our realistic goals and expectations. This sounds like a losers mentality, but unfortunately this team floundered for the majority of the first half so it's what we're left with.

I'm not sure I'd bet my rent money, but I love hearing this from our young players.

They have to get at least 2 of 3 from the Padres to start this road trip.  Let's start by winning tonight.

Anything can happen. But, imagine, this team would have to play .627 ball to get to 87 games - that's about where they will need to end up to make the playoffs. Just not likely. As players, they're saying the right things. Let them just go an do it. If this team finishes at .500, plays .537 ball over the remaining games (36-31), everyone would have to be happy. The team will have overachieved.

Can't win with some of you people. All year there are complaints about the losing mentality this team has, and talk of how losing has become acceptable. What Mejia said is the exact opposite- it's shedding that loser mentality, and some of you are complaining about that.

I love the quote, will it happen - probably not, but at least we know that's his and other players goals.

Yeah go Jenrry! :D And metsblog please near end of season post complication of Mejia's end-of-win celebration moves which are completely random and insane. Love confidence, go Mets!

Two weeks ago, most of us would've said "What the hell was he smoking?"

But recently, why can't we?

But here we go Into the infamous second half of the season, where we're notorious for struggling and in a certain month downright collapsing. What if we reverse that trend? Every year in baseball, there's always one or two teams that catch fire later in the season. This year the two hottest teams going into the all star break are the Angels and the Mets.

Start the 2nd half off right, then get to .500 and we'll revisit this whole subject

Nothing wrong with this, gentleman.  I like the swag.  I believe the question of whether they will make it or not is how they will bounce back after losses.  They cannot afford to lose multiple games in a row.  Need to chip away.  Even it means going 6-4 on the road trip.  That's a success.  How do you eat an elephant.... one bite at a time.  LGM!

We can make it if we play like we did in our last 10 games and Alderson gets a bat.  but what are the chances of that happening?  cheapo

This is a positive sign...when a team is talking like that you can't write them off as easily.  I like it. I like it a lot.

@Tormented Mets Fan I hear what you're saying, but I just feel like they need to get back to .500 before any serious playoff talk should start. Especially when you're talking about a team that hasn't had a winning season in any of these player's major league careers with the team (except Wright).

To me, this just rings through as another Alderson "We can win 90 games" scenario. It's putting the cart before the horse, again, talking about achievements this franchise hasn't come close to in a long time. To use one last cliche, it just seems like this team always thinks it can run before it proves it can walk all the time, and it's just frustrating to me as a fan.

@Michael Jacoutot agreed...of  the 4 sports, baseball is the only sport where you overcome a lot of ground over the course of a season

That being said, lets just get back to .500, and go from there

@Chris Lyons  I agree - either bring him up or send him back to AA and promote him directly from there once he gets his feet under him again.

@mets2death since i'm going to the game, i'd say near 100%.  i'm sure terry will hit him 5th again, too.

Eric Koeller
Eric Koeller

@mets2death there are 6 outfielders on the roster and 3 outfield sports. Granderson and Lageres each get a spot for 1 starting stop and 4 players so 25%

I agree with you, I'm hopeful now, but we were so far down when we started playing well they screwed themselves. All they needed was one run earlier in the year and they'd be in the thick of the division right now

Eric Koeller
Eric Koeller

@mets2death @Eric Koeller no problem

but in all seriousness not likely since Ian Kennedy is a righty. Either  Eric Young or Niewenhies are the likely starters

Young might not start till Monday in Seattle when the Mets face lefty Roenis Elias

Chris Lyons
Chris Lyons

That's cool about Ian Kennedy being a right but Tyson Ross is starting tn and I believe he is a stud lefty

Eric Koeller
Eric Koeller

@Chris Lyons ? Espn and MLB.com list tonights starters as being Colon vs Kennedy. Also, Ross is listed as a righty
