Jenrry Mejia continues to struggle in August

Cubs SS Starlin Castro led off the ninth inning with a game-breaking, solo home run against Jenrry Mejia, which lead to a 2-1 loss to the Cubs.

Mejia had not allowed a home run since June 1.

“I tried to throw outside. That was outside,” Mejia said after the game. “He got it. I wanted to get ahead. I tried to throw the first pitch for a strike. In that situation, I don’t want to throw the first pitch for a ball. … I think he was waiting for a fastball, because I threw a fastball away and he swung.”

Opposing hitters are batting .345 on first pitches against Mejia this season.

He is 0-3 with a blown save and a 7.25 ERA in his last seven appearances.

Mejia has an era of 4.00. To simplify that is to say he gives up a run approximately every other inning. So every other game he's going to blow a save!

A young staff on a team that doesn't score can't afford a closer like Mejia. Both Familia and Black look like better options to me.

Everything is up in the strikezone with Mejia.  And his antics are absurd.  It puts even more of a target on his back.

It's easy to say that Dicky won a Cy Young with a hernia but everyone responds differently to different types of injuries, Mejia is obviously uncomfortable and not pitching well, why not shut him down and let him have the surgery and be ready for spring training and give others an opportunity to step up in his absence, not fair to him or the team to keep running him out there and costing the team games, Black would be my choice.

The problem with Mejia is that he is now predictable. First pitch whenever he comes in, breaking ball on the outside. The hitters have noticed this too.

The Mets would be wise to cash in on Mejia sooner rather than later and let Familia become the closer.

This is the problem with having TC manage for his job over the last two months when the team is not contending for anything.  Injured or unproductive players have been overused to win meaningless games.  The race for the wild card is a fantasy -- it has been obvious for some time that it isn't happening this year, and no one was expecting otherwise.  The whole thing makes no sense.

How about we repost that article from a few weeks ago saying Familia and Mejia was one of the best tandems ever.

I got blasted for calling it crap. They're young pitchers with great stuff. Both are coming off injuries and one has an injury. There will be bumps in the road.

Too many flat pitches - pitches that don't have bite. Even when he's picked up saves, he has been hit sharply but right at fielders. Maybe he's tired. Maybe he lacks concentration. Maybe he's hurt. Time to cut him back - he's not a Mariano Rivera.

Shut him down and have him get that hernia operation.

He is pitching hurt....shut him down and give Familia the closer role for the rest of the year to give him a taste and see how he does....next year has no guarantees so let's see if he can handle it...

Mejia should never be the closer.......he is nothing but middle relief. As usual it takes the Mets brass 6 months longer to diagnose these issues.

Maybe he's tired. A small man who throws very hard.

I commend him even admire him for pitching hurt but at this point it's doing more harm then good.Mets need to shut him down. Mets aren't making it to the playoffs so whats the point of keeping him active.

@Dennis Oilman his era includes his numbers as a starter, as does his batting average against, hits allowed etc etc.  If you take just his numbers as a reliever, they look very different.  He is going through a rough patch but overall has been excellent since going to the pen.  give him a chance as he is still learning the job plus pitching through the hernia.

@J. Gomez i guess the first pitch fastball on the corner was just a mistake then? did you reas the article and quotes?
