‘It’s like pulling teeth’ with Ruben Tejada

Ruben Tejada 1 polaroid“One of the problems with Ruben Tejada is it’s like pulling teeth,” Sandy Alderson told WFAN’s Mike Francesa.

“It’s extra batting practice, extra this, extra that, it doesn’t happen, necessarily, unless someone else is insisting on it,” he said. “We need to see a commitment to improvement. He’s going to have to earn it.”

Alderson said the team considered calling up Tejada on September 1, when the rosters expanded. But, because Triple-A Las Vegas is playoff-bound, the 51s said that they need Tejada on the team and he will stay there for the time being, according to the GM.

Terry Collins has been making comments like this about Tejada for years. It started in Spring Training 2012, when he moaned about Ruben being late to camp in a year when expectations were high for him to replace Jose Reyes at shortstop. Now, Alderson is getting in on the act. In the end, it’s about production. If the work (or lack-thereof) is impacting the production, then he needs to get it together. If it’s just a matter of body size, scouting reports, etc., and the game catching up to him, more workouts will not matter.
