It’s been a really, really rough week

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

Hey, remember when the Mets were 16-12 and in second place? Me neither, despite it being only a week ago. Today, they enter play having lost five games in a row and are in last place… again.

“Losing sucks,” David Wright said after Saturday’s game. “We’re just not getting it done.”

USATSI_7907661_110579513_lowres

I know it’s only May 11, and maybe it’s the back-to-back-to-back losses by one run that is getting to me, but this past week felt like a total nightmare. There have been countless missed opportunities and  questionable decisions by Terry Collins, specifically late in games.

If it isn’t the bullpen squandering good starting pitching, it’s hitters leaving bases loaded. If it isn’t bad throws from the outfield, it’s Collins pulling the pitcher with just 88 pitches. If it isn’t a rare, poor start from the rotation, it’s a pinch hitter tipping his hand from the top step of the dugout.

I’ve watched enough baseball to know the Mets aren’t this bad, but I also know they probably aren’t as good as they looked a week and a half ago.

Fred -

Time to sell the team.  What you've done for the past 4 years is a selfish & appalling disgrace.

Thank you Curtis Stranderson's You gave me what I have come to expect from you.

As long as Selig is commissioner, this team will not improve. He is protecting his friend Fred Wilpon. If Fred wasn't a family friend, he would've been forced to sell just like McCourt was forced to sell the Dodgers. Wilpon was a benefactor of the biggest Ponzi scheme ever perpetrated on American soil for years, but criminal involvement by an MLB owner is cool as long as you are a friend with Selig.

Matt, you can't keep sitting there and saying it's still only this date, or still only that date. That's the wrong attitude for everyone to have. This team doesn't have the talent to flip a switch and start playing great baseball. Since when does the calendar dictate when you play well? That's a poor excuse.

For crying out loud, bring up Wally Backman already!

We could have had Marlon Byrd back but Alderson went with Chris Young instead. Byrd was a fan favorite and has 23 RBI for the Phillies.

We still have no real SS.

We have a bad owner, bad GM and bad Manager. Why should we expect anything but failure?

If you had to choose David or (Jeter @ age 31) bottom of the 9th: 2 outs: runner on 2nd?

Glad we didn't take that risk on abreu with his 13 hrs and near 1000 ops. I mean if you continue to field a team with only 1 star hitter, your offense is going to suck.

Blaming the Wilpons was cool for the first few years, but by now you should be capable of seeing what the real problem is. The Wilpons have never had a problem spending money before, there's no doubt they want the Mets to be good, they just have no idea what they're doing. It became more clear than ever this offseason that even now in debt, they still want to spend, but Sandy is stopping them. Sandy always says he has the money to spend, but they never do anything. That's not on the Wilpons, that's on Sandy, and the reason Sandy does this is because its what he was told to do.

The only man who deserves all the attention is Selig. He refuses to remove the Wilpons and he put Sandy here to make sure he stops them from making the situation worse by spending even more. The Wilpons are children who don't have a clue, Sandy is here to be the father who tells them no. As long as Selig is the commissioner, nothing will change. The only hope that Mets fans actually have right now is the Wilpons say enough and fire Sandy if this is another losing season. I love what he's done for our minor league system, but Sandy is not here to make the Mets a winner, he's here to control the Wilpons so Selig doesn't have to do anything. This team could be great... but our GM will never take the extra step necessary to make us a real contender. He will never take a risk, it will always be the safe move. Its why we signed Granderson and not Abreu. Its why you'll never see Wally and Terry will never be fired.

A man is going to be removed from being an owner for saying something racist in private, but the Wilpons who were part of an actual huge criminal act are allowed to keep being owners because they're friends with the commissioner? This is a great country we live in.

Matthew, it seems like you might have been a proponent for them keeping Collins - can't remember - or were you just feeling, since they did give him the extension, to be resigned to it and support him.  Feels like sometimes you have sung his praises, but obviously not here.  I wanted him gone a long time ago.  Not positive Wally is the answer, but I think it was worth and still might be worth a try.  Y'know who I would like to see them try out?  Jose Oquendo.  He's an ex-Met, a Cardinal who would bring all of that professionalism with him.  That guy really seems like he has it together and could do a good job - just waiting for the chance.  In general, I've had a feeling that some of the better managers have been ex-catchers, so that's another avenue I would explore, if I was shopping for a manager.  A lot of them have had success.  They know how to call a game, so that covers both the pitching and the catching.  They have had a lot of control of the game as a player.  Many times the calls from the manager or bench coach come through the catcher.

METS
I was born in 1962 and have been a Mets fan from the moment I stuck my neck out and the first slap on my ass. As a Mets fan I still keep sticking my neck out and keep getting kicked in my ass.
I keep saying I will start to exercise after my first heart attack. Now I say I will go to church every Sunday after Terry Collins has his.(not dead just out of the game)

Why the rant.

My Mets cut another player who as a Mets fan we should not have expected much out of. The last two players cut were fill in players.
The Mets again want more out of their bench player than they want from their BIG money guys. I wish nothing but the best to little big O and Eyebrows. Let me close by saying Ike Vegas, I still don't and won't miss you,but if you could, put in a good word with the Pirates about Curtis Stranderson.

The team was at joke at 16-12 and a bunch of delusional people on this blog thought the Mets had turned the corner. No--it's a bad team on paper and it's a VERY rare occurrence when a bad team on paper is a good team on the field. Collins' contract should never have been extended. At the core of the problem are the Wilpons AND the idiots who pay to see this team. They are rewarding the ownership for their incompetence.

We need to start a Fire Sandy chant every game.

"I’ve watched enough baseball to know the Mets aren’t this bad"

Who is he kidding? This team is this bad. No hitting, no speed, no bullpen, no bench, no infield defense, suspect starting pitching. Where is it any good?

I'm sick of the lies they tell the fans.Sandy preaches on base average is what he looks at.But this off season he signs Grandy, and CY.Two guys against everything he says.Do something with this team.Fire TC and make some moves. It's slipping away!

Happy Mothers day to all you M F's out there.

I do mean Mets Fan not the other thing. As a true Mets fan you all know the other phrase I am referring to. We all use it at least once a day during a three hour period  162 days a year.

Were the meta ever 16-12 or is that another cerrone typo?

Hard to get that one wrong tho, they are 16-19 now so that would mean 7 straight losses, which isn't the case.

Good stuff metsblog, keep up the good work!

Everyone on here is calling for Collins to be replaced with Backman. Just like they wanted Jerry Manuel gone. And Willie Randolph.

The managers change but the team keeps losing. Year 6 now and in last place again. Yet it's the manager??? Try getting us some talent and see what happens.

It's funny how the great managers in this league seem to have solid ballplayers. And us? We have Tejada and Duda and d'Arnaud and Fatnsworth and Valverde and yet we're expected to win.

Zac Tindall

So we replace mejia with montero

We replace farnsworthless with mejia

Use gee or neise for a trade with cards for Craig or Adams then bring syndergaard to the bigs option Campbell to the minors and then sandy you might see a few more fans

@JimmyFromDBX  Please post your source for these stats you're throwing out. And seriously, I've never heard someone complain about a player getting a hit when they need one, but it being a double instead of a homer.

Also wasn't 88 pitches

TheJMan

That's all well and good and there's some truth to what you're saying

But taking out Gee last night --your number #1 guy, a night after using 7 pitchers to start am inning with your lefty specialist

And not walking Howard to load em and have Farnsworth face Byrd with a force at every base

Inexcusable ....

A manager may or may not have an impact in a team's success but more often than not has an impact on its failure

TC is simply not good and more so not a good fit for this type of (bad) team that needs to be perfect from the dugout

@Steven Matregrano @Bob GiacaloneYou're absolutely right about that. If that's what you are going for, I certainly understand it. BUT if you are going to see a winning team, stay home. It's a blog, Steven.  People complain. Mostly NYers. We like to complain. It's fun.

@Steven Matregrano @Bob Giacalone  will you just shut up already

it's a blog -- it's commentary -- it's internet talk radio

people want to vent -- and you know they aren't far off with their complaints--if people put in 20 hours a week on this team--and they keep on getting let down for so many reasons.. they can complain

stop being Mets police -- especially when you have no idea what you're talking about

Five starters. Colon is up and dien. Meija can't get close to finishing a game. Gee can't get past the sixth. Wheeler and Niese are fine. So three of the five starters are big questions.

As for the bench, who is there? Abreu is hitting .167. Then there's Tejada and Eric Young, both under .225.

As for speed, who steals, Murphy? Eric Young has 12 but doesn't play.

Brian McCarthy
Brian McCarthy

No, Terry I would fire because he makes questionable moves. And I didn't want to rant about all these yes men coaches this team has.Collins is not a good manager.Granted it has a lot to do with the talent or lack of, which will be his demise.

TheJMan
TheJMan

@Steven Matregrano @TheJMan  oh.. what did Byrd do in the at bat?

risk a HR? what if Howard hits a HR?

you have no idea what you're talking about -- you're talking macro reasons for micro decisions

what have you been watching baseball for 5 years? my nephew who is 7 knows more than you

TheJMan
TheJMan

Do you know what a force at every base is?

TheJMan
TheJMan

It's a basic move dude

You're arguing that Byrd is a hotter hitter?

See what Howard has done here?

You're protecting a manager who wouldn't hesitate to go righty vs righty or lefty vs lefty -- so it's a no brainer-- just two innings before he took out Gee to put in Rice for the lefties so he's inconsistent right there

Stop trying to act so smart --you're not

TC's deficiencies as a game manager are clear - this is a bad team, yes, but until we get Willie Mays, we need a guy who can get the most out of said bad team --they have not overperformed their bad talent since he's been here
