Ike Davis will start at first base on Sunday

Ike Davis, fresh off his pinch-hit walk-off grand slam on Saturday, will start at first base on Sunday.

Despite naming Lucas Duda his starter, Terry Collins said that he was planning to start Davis on Sunday anyway.

“When I talked to him the other day, I said, ‘Listen, you’re going to play Sunday. So even though it may not be an everyday thing, you’re going to get playing time,” Collins said (ESPN, April 6)

Duda hit two home runs on Friday night, then went 0-4 with three strikeouts on Saturday. Duda will likely start on Tuesday against the Braves’ Aaron Harang.

Collins has no idea what he's doing an any given day

Ike's hitting over .500 (yes I know, completely unsustainable), Duda is hitting under .150 with 3 k's and a weak groundout rolling into the next game, he can't play defense anywhere, and yet the brain trust thinks this is the better option...hot hand be damned. Never been to Citi field, but if this is the way the powers that be want to roll, It looks like I can safely keep my money in my pocket.

I hope Davis makes the most of this opportunity - he already has 1 run scored today - and forces TC to play him & bench Duda. When Davis is on, he is 10x the ball player Duda could ever imagine being. I like the competition, though. It seems like it is bringing the best out of both guys thus far.

Starting Davis after you've already named Duda the starter at 1B is a joke. Yes, I realize Davis hit a walk off GS but he did his job. He was a pitch hitter and did his job. You don't name a guy starter on Day 1 and then change your mind two days later b/c a bench guy did his job. I really could care which guy starts but this carousel is a joke.

Make a decision. Give the starter a full month before you actually usurp him. Let him succeed or fail on his own but don't bench him for a game here and there b/c your bench player came into a game and did what he was supposed to do. All the more reason why the people running this team are a joke….

Maybe by making duda the starter ,this will wake up ike and get back to being the hitter he should be which show it on Saturday!

Ok so Ike and Duda have the same type of power, but Ike is more aggressive, while Duda has the better eye/OBP.  In terms of power threat/run production (which the Mets need), I think Ike is the better choice.

Defensively both are slow runners but Duda is also slow footed and lumbering (subtle difference).  Ike seems to be more agile at and around 1B.  I think Ike is the better choice here too.

NOW...here's how you handle this situation IMO:  Switch the roles (Ike's the starter; Duda's the power threat off the bench) and then Sandy, SHUT UP ABOUT IT.  The Mets paid Ike $3.5Mil for what?  To be the team scapegoat?  You paid him to play.  Whether its because you think he can help the club or be trade bait, LET HIM PLAY already and SHUT UP ABOUT IT.  I know we fans are sick to death of this story line...i can't imagine how these two must feel.

Duda being named the starter because in a 6 game week he's gonna play 3 games while Satin and Ike split 3 other games depending on the starter, is WEAK IMO...Sandy...Terry...grow a pair, make a definitive decision and STICK TO IT.

Duda has hit 320 against the pitchers theMet are facing this week, while Davis has hit 209 against the same guys.should not be too difficult to figure out who should be playing.Even if it's a small sample size it is the same for both.Neither Duda or Davis has a history vs Simon, today's starter so Davis get the call to keep him from sitting for a week.I would prefer them name one and move the other, but if they are not ready to decide, this use of past AB seems as good a way as any for now.

I think the conversion went something like this " Ike, I'm benching you in favor of Duda. That is until Sunday when you'll be starting. From there it'll be Duda's job to lose, unless of course he's not playing. Then it's your job to lose that day. Got it?"

Ike has got to be the everyday guy. Much better defensively than Duda and has a much higher ceiling

What if ike goes 3-4 with 2 HR and 5 rbis then who starts the next game?

LOL! Not surprised to see this still going on after Duda was named the starter at first.

TC does not know what he is doing here. He is the problem. Stick to your desicions and go with it.

If Ike goes 0-4 with 3 strikeouts, will everyone want Duda back?

It's funny, last year people cried when Valdespin had a double in one game then sat the next... now people are complaining that Davis gets a start he was supposed to get after a walk-off grand slam.

I'm beginning to think TC is the problem with first base.

good for Ike, but this whole 1B situation is a joke.  They are managing the team like its fantasy baseball.  "oh, you hit a HR yesterday, you start, even though we just said two days ago you weren't the starter."   Just pick a guy and move on.

In the few games Duda has played at first, is fielding is very average.  Ike is a better defensive first baseman too.  Can't they get this right and get Davis straightened out.

too bad we are not playing monday

So TC anointed Duda the starter at 1B, and then has to sit him a couple of days later?  I thought the whole idea of making him the starter was that he would get the majority of AB's to see if he could handle the job full time?  How does giving him a day off so soon (and early in the season) make sense?  I am all about Ike being the 1B but I don't see the logic here.  You named Duda the starter, so let him play.  Again, I would have given Davis the first crack, but you made a decision.  At least stick with it for more than a few days.  Poor move by TC in my opinion.

good for Ike, even though i am not a fan of his or Duda's for that matter, but it is ludicrous to name Duda the"starter" on Fri and 2 days later start Ike, too many mixed messages, this is a good way to start player morale problems? Collins..say what you mean and mean what you say??

Davis is a guy who has hit 30 homers and driven in over 90 in a season.  Getting that potential back should be a priority for this club.  Play Ike, this is a lost season anyways.

@drmetfan This was announced when he announced Duda was getting the majority of the starts. He knows what he is doing.

@ny12jets I keep hearing Ike is a good defensive first baseman, but I just don't see it. I think he is average at best.

@Stearnsfan12  when he named duda the starter he had said (go check the videotape) that ike would start on sunday, to keep him sharp

No I feel he will wake up and end up with 30 hrs at the end of the season!

@rico It's true that Collins said that.  However, does that really make Duda the starter?  If he's going to bring in Ike every couple days to "keep him sharp" and Satin will start against left handers, then that means first base is still a mess.

Stick Duda there every day, and keep Ike sharp by pinch hitting being a defensive replacement late in games.

They don't sit Wright from time to time to keep his back up sharp.  They sit him because he needs a rest.  That's the difference between having a starter and not.
