Ike Davis and Lucas Duda (Baron)

Ike Davis has a real chance to be starting 1B

In his morning blog post for the Daily News, columnist Andy Martino writes:

“I get the sense that what the Mets are saying publicly about Ike Davis is the same as what they’re saying in private: He really will have the chance to earn the first base job this spring training.”

Sandy Alderson expects Davis and Lucas Duda to be in camp together for Spring Training, he told SNY earlier this week in Chicago.

“We’re going to have some competition at first base,” he said. “It’s possible both will be on the team and, if they are, I think it’s important to have some flexibility in how they’re used.”

In the event the Mets don’t want Davis or Lucas Duda on the Opening Day roster, both players can still be sent to Triple-A to start 2014 since they each have an option and would not need to pass through waivers (Rubin, Jan. 21).

lol that shows how bad we need a 1st baseman.

Duda has yet to look good in a battle for his position. Not sure Spring training even tells us much anyway, since the weather there isn't likely to match the first couple of months in New York or around the league.

When the incumbent is Lucas Duda, I would say anyone short of Mr. Met has a chance to win the starting position.  Maybe Keith should come out of the booth and show up to camp.

I think every Met fan would like nothing better than to see Ike win Comeback Player of the Year. But the guy has not been the same (at bat AND int he field) since that ill-fated collision with David Wright three years ago. And the team simply cannot weather another .160 performance from a power position.

Davis is not a bum, but we simply cannot afford another first half like we've seen the last two years. He has to come out of the gate fast or dump him.

Let's take a poll - Who are the Mets messing around more with Ike Davis or Lucas Duda?

I would rather see Ike at first because he is better defensively than Duda. Duda doesn't really play any position well. He can't move his feet quickly enough to play first. Since neither of them can hit, I would rather have a defensive first baseman.

Call me a crazy met fan but I hope Ike starts this year have a feeling he's gonna tear it up and suprise a lot of people. They screwed with his mechanics too much.

Duh!!!!!! He really is the only option behind Duda and Satin who are bench players at best. Davis will be at 1B because the Mets were unable to make a much need move to improve the club. WOW what a revelation.......Tejada at SS and Davis at 1B. Gotta love the changes!!!!

Russ Sullivan nailed it. Ike is an AAA stud and a MLB bum. He would probably be an all star in japan.

Amazing. This guy had a collective .160 season, spread over the last two. He has become a bull fighter at first with his side swipes of hot grounders to first. Cut your losses for God's sake and free up his money.

Of course Ike does.  He is the only player on the roster with any semblance of a track record of success at first.  And the Mets are in full spin mode now that they are stuck with him and Tejada.  Do P90X and win the starting SS gig!

Let's be honest Ike had a few good months a few years ago. Made a couple great catches near the dugout and people were calling him the next big thing. I personally like the guy he's a good guy to have in the clubhouse but he's not a starting first baseman in the majors. He's more a bench player. If that. He's a 4A player. To good for tripe A and just not good enough for the pros.

Uhh, this is kind of obvious isn't it?  They're not benching/demoting him at his salary.

I would do anything in my power to make this happen.

In reality, Ike's lack of consistent mechanics is what has led to his prolonged slumps and streaky hitting.

@Brian Daley The Mets now seem to feel that Tejada has learned his lesson about being in shape and hustling, the way he did when Reyes left. If he can play the way he did that first year and continue to play that way, there is no reason to sign Drew.

trust me a guy like IKE is not liked in the clubhouse...all that garbage you hear is garbage.

@MMIAA and you have personal knowledge/experience with Ike in the clubhouse?
