Ignore Twitter and blogs, says Alderson, who appreciates Murph

This past Saturday, when asked to respond to online trade rumors about the Mets wanting to trade Daniel Murphy, Sandy Alderson said:

“I haven’t been on Twitter in a long time, so I know you haven’t been reading my tweets and I don’t think you’ve been reading them from Terry Collins. So, at this point, do what I do, ignore Twitter and try to ignore the blogosphere and have a beer when you go home tonight.”

Murphy is making $5.8 million this year. He is eligible for salary arbitration this winter, and can become a free agent after the 2015 season.

“Look, we have a real appreciation for Dan Murphy,” Alderson said. “There’s no question – in terms of this ballpark – he’s been a plus. You know, we talk about it all the time, we’re looking for players that are willing to play in New York or can play in New York. He hits in New York. He hits in this ballpark.”

Speaking of the social media, have you all seen the video of Fifty Cent's Hip-Hop Demolition Night?  How did they not foresee this happening?:

Think the Mets couldn't move to Montreal, and the relatively new Citi Field be demolished and replaced by a major mixed use development?  Think again, because that is EXACTLY what is happening in Atlanta.  The 17 year old Turner Field is scheduled for demolition as soon as the Braves move out to Cobb County, GA.

Well, if they trade Murphy, it would probably be to one of Sandy's favorite trading partners: Oakland, San Diego, Pittsburgh or Arizona. Throw in San Francisco as a maybe.

With that answer Alderson confirms either Murphy being traded or Half-life 3

Dear MLB and the rest of the NL East:

Wake us up when the league forces the Wilpons out. This nonsense is embarassing even to us.

So people are really think that SA is telling folks that the only way to watch the Mets is by drinking and that he's also advocating underage drinking by that quote? I'm not sticking up for SA, but c'mon. Seems that people are reading what they want to read.

Sandy needs to shut his trap about what we do.  He's the guy who thinks this is a 90 win team?  he really believes this then he really has no clue. every day we watch a triple aaa team at best.  add on the fact that the new radio station is a joke with no signal to listen to the games...7th in revenue, 17th in payroll, a GM who thinks he has a 90 win team and a radio station that you need to use a coffee can stretched between another can to listen to the game. We have the best radio and tv crews in the business if not for them this team and organization would be un-watchable.

Sandy I know u may not be listening, but its just about time to let you go....

I'm glad he didn't come out and say they're not trading Murphy.  I'm sure it will be tempting to keep him while he's having a good year and our offensive is terrible, but the right baseball move is to trade him.  Hopefully the front office has the courage to do it, because it won't be popular with a lot of fans.

“Look, we have a real appreciation for Dan Murphy,” Alderson said.

I just used "Google Translate" in "Aldersonese" and that means...

"He is making a lot of money, and yes we would trade him"...

Murphy is a goner after this year. I think David Wright is the only met who will ever be offered a upper tier salary. When Matt Harvey's time arrives say goodbye to him as well. The organization thinks they have a team based in Paudcha Kentucky (no offense to Paducah)

The team needs offense so why even consider reading our best hitter? He's perfect for Citifield

Whether its Murphy in a trade or someone else....this team needs to do something...and fast!!

We are sinking into last place and have no energy or enthusiasm. Its a minor league team in disguise.

Even if we make a trade, I dont trust Sandy to make a good one.

Whenever Sandy says something, I have no idea what he is trying to say. "We hare a real appreciation for Dan" I am guessing that  means  Murph is a great chip to trade and trading Murph  will save the Wilpons loads of money.

Guys, what do you want him to say? "The owners care more about debt service than the won/loss record?" We're frustrated watching this team, imagine his frustration having to WORK for the Wilpons. That must be a hell I can't describe.

He's trying to lighten things up with a little gallows humor. I sincerely doubt he's coming into work every day and actually doing his job with this flippant attitude.

And Cobb County is still in Atlanta...your point?

@Doubleday That would never happen. Montreal is looking for a major league team.

@1craigswan I could see Murphy going to SF.  I don't think they're too happy with Sandoval as a long-term solution at 3B, Murphy's natural position.  Watch him bring us the washed-up Lincecum and cash.

@Fred Williams sandy is an enabler. but lets be real - the mets issues stem from the top. as long as the wilpons run this team, we have no team.

Lee Lewin

@jamets Why is the right baseball move to trade him?  Guy is proving to be a quality hitter in this ball park, and we need quality hitters. He's not 30 till next year. Isn't the point of all this is to build a quality baseball team.

Daniel murphy can certainly be part of that. By trading him, you are just creating another hole in the lineup. And please don't tell me about Wilmer Flores. He's years away from possibly being a solid ML hitter.

Murphy is finally one on the every day basis.

@wilpondscm You are known by the company you keep.  Fred was in bed with the biggest scam artist in modern history, and now he's aligned himself with an ex-car salesman who was convicted of collusion.  A felon.  You need to do a better job of picking your friends, Mr. Wilpon.

@barbarossa WILLING?  It's an honor to play in New York.  Almost every player wants to play on the biggest stage.

@Jay Cross I certainly don't want him telling my son and other young baseball fans that the answer is inside a beer can.

Couldn't agree more. Murph is a natural for Citifield and NYC. He is the ONLY player on the Mets that hits on a consistent basis. He has his slumps like anyone, but they rarely last that long. If anything, they should resign him. IMHO, of course. Some fans want to trade everyone for prospects, fine and good, but you rarely get so see those prospects for years to come. And most don't make it to the bigs. Keep Murph. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Alderson is the one who says Murphy is not on the trading block.

But people on here always seem to mention him in a trade. Do they care about how much he's going to make?

wilpondscm

@Doubleday @barbarossa you are projecting. many players would love to take their millions and play in a relaxed environment. it is far from an honor to play for the mets. ask beltran who ranto the yanks last minute offering a cheaper deal. everyone knows this franchise is a loser franchise with the wilpons at the helm.

shea
shea

@Doubleday @barbarossa I dont know if that is true....it USED to be true...but not anymore.

It used to be that you needed to play in a big market to market yourself, but that was before social media and the internet.....now you have Manning as the most marketed guy in the US, played in Indiana.....Lebron became a household name playing in Cleveland.  (there are more examples)...Its better to win anywhere...winning is marketable, not NY. (You see David Wright on TV alot?)

Now players look at NY as a city with intense media pressure and high taxes.

Which is why I have said all along.....WE NEED TO OVERPAY, would you want to play for the Mets?

Jay Cross

@barbarossa @Jay Cross Ever think about personal pride? This is a man with a stunningly impressive baseball resume. Do you think he wants his last big job in the game to go down as a complete bust?

Jay Cross

@Doubleday @Jay Cross Yeah, because if you think about this critically, that's exactly what Sandy Alderson is advocating: underage drinking. To all of the youngsters at the season ticketholders meeting.

And he is also the one that said payroll would be higher than last year

shea

@theglider Yes, I do....this ownership has serious debt and payroll is the greatest expense and the one most under their control....OF COURSE THEY CARE!!! They hold guys back from Super 2 because they fear they might be successful and thus they might have to pay them in the future.

what moves indicate that he doesnt care about money?  Please let me know....has he EVER raised the salary of the team?

What indication to you is there that he DOESNT care about money?

Macacawitz

@Jay Cross @barbarossa Did you say stunningly impressive baseball resume?  The last world champion he was tied to was 25 years ago.  Did you see the two teams playing yesterday?  He spent 4 years running each......into the ground.

shea

@Jay Cross @barbarossa If he had any pride he wouldnt allow himself to become a mouthpiece for broke owners.

Instead he allows himself to become a running joke all because he knows this time spent in purgatory will (likely)  result with him getting the Commish gig.

Doubleday

@Jay Cross @Doubleday Grow up, Jay.  How old are you, twelve?  When you have a teenager you'll understand that as a parent, you don't need anyone telling your kids that drinking is the answer for anything.  Ever.  It was an irresponsible comment.

theglider

But it's the people on here who are calling for Murphy's trade. They're the bloggers Alderson says he doesn't read. If no one on here was saying "Trade him" then it would be different. But the fans on these blogs are driving these rumors.

Jay Cross

@Doubleday @Jay Cross Since you asked, my own father was a negligent alcoholic. Not that it has any relevance to this, since Sandy was clearly making a joke to a room full of adults, not telling underage minors to drink.

Doubleday
Doubleday

@Jay Cross The Cardinals are owned by a brewery, and not even their GM would tell the fans to relax and have a beer.

Jay Cross

@Doubleday @Jay Cross If he did, no one would care because the Cardinals are successful. We are only splitting hairs about this because the Mets suck.

Jay Cross

@Doubleday @Jay Cross You asked about my age and implied I would only understand your point when I had a teenage son to worry about drinking with myself. I don't need to wait for that. I was that teenager myself.

And guess what? It makes me even more able to see how totally harmless Sandy's comment was.

Pleasure debating with you.

Doubleday
Doubleday

@Jay Cross @Doubleday No.  I would actually care more, because more people would be paying attention to this clown.  Don't get me wrong, I love the Mets, but instilling common sense and values in my son and his peers is far more important.
