ICYMI, Weekend Review and What’s on Tap for May 19

What’s on Tap for Monday, May 19…

The Mets are off Monday, after which they play 20 games in 20 days.

The Mets and Rafael Montero (0-1, 4.50 ERA) begin a three-game series against the Dodgers and Josh Beckett (1-1, 2.38) on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m.

In case you missed it, this past weekend…

Jenrry Mejia pitched a scoreless ninth inning on Saturday for his first big-league save. However, he will not be considered the full-time closer until he demonstrates he can pitch back-to-back days, Terry Collins said after the game.

Ruben Tejada will continue to get the bulk of the playing time at shortstop (Rubin, May 17).

Mets rookie starting pitchers Rafael Montero and Jacob deGrom will each make starts this week, as opposed to skipping someone with Monday’s off day, according to Collins.

Kyle Farnsworth inked a major-league deal with the Astros, then blew a three-run lead in his debut.

A really beautiful ballpark. Now if we could only get a major league team to play there.

The reason the Mets are this bad is  because Ron Darling is  getting fat!!!!!!!

Is it my eyes but isn't Keith Hernandez getting older by the minute?

Oprah Winfrey should buy the Mets for the sake of New York.

OK Mets fans the rest of the week is not going to be pretty.....TC does not know how to handle the lineup to win games as you all know.....he is lost and is only trying to do his best in order to sign a new contract for beyond.....like I said he is lost....and is not getting any support from Sandyman.

Sit Grandyman and Tejada and we might win a few games.

I think Murphy should be pushed down to #3 ... our best hitter this season.  allows Lagares to be #2, between EY and Murphy, maybe he will see more fastballs in zone (if EY can get on).  Would also lengthen lineup, push everyone else down a spot.

Shake it up, TC ... try to create something.

i was a duda guy, thought he would take the job and really run with it when given chance... disappointed so far.

the really truly worst starting SS in MLB is probably Brad Miller of Mariners, offensively anyway.  Seems hard to understand why Nick Franklin isn't up in MLB and starting there (is he injured or something?) ... unless he just is not a SS.  In any event, can't imagine Seattle anxious to trade him given Miller's struggles, think Mets need to look to Arizona to get Didi.

Why did the Mets bring up Wilmer Flores?  To sit on the bench obviously.  Brilliant.

They need to really explore if there is a trade partner for Granderson.  His offense translates to warning track power and strikeouts at Citifield, and at age 33, that's not going to get better.  His salary just means that he will continue to play everyday and be a bigger and bigger albatross over the next 3.5 years.

He was great in Yankee stadium last week, and would still have value in AL East with all of those little ballparks.  But Mets ... don't wait on this one.  He is a deteriorating asset and could be untradeable a year from now.

Someone joked about 'Wheeler to the pen'. I've been wondering if the Mets would send Wheeler down to get himself straightened out but the bullpen is intriguing. A pen with Mejia and Wheeler would be formidable.  If DeGrom is consistently good as his debut was, he could step right in to the rotation. At the risk of sounding pollyanaish, with all our young arms, we've got options.

How about some nice, "Waaallllleeeey Backman, clap, clap, clap, Waaallllleeeey Backman, clap, clap, clap.." at Citi for every home game?

Seriously, Tejada earned the job back already?  Flores was brought here to be the every day shortstop.  How is Sandy Alderson OK with this?  And Tejada is 1 for his last 13.  Come on man, what's going on here?

Farnsworth didn't blow a three run lead in his debut. He actually got a hold. Metsblog fact checking ftw!

Everyone in here is expressing dismay with Terry Collins lately.  I was a big fan of Terry but this past month has seen some bizarre (or lack thereof) moves by him (keeping Mejia in WAY too long in Colorado; benching our best player Lagares, etc etc).  So now I ask: what would it take to name one Wally Backman as manager?  A losing streak of 8 out of 10 perhaps?

Neal Shimmel
Neal Shimmel

Collins has to go. He sits Lagares 4 out of 5 or something like that, says they needed more offense, they get shutout 2 games in a row before he says this. Lagares plays a game, hits a homerun, makes a great play, and then Collins says "Lagares is his centerfielder" Wake up Collins. I'm getting sick of him.

Zach Goeringer
Zach Goeringer

Collins needs to stop telling every single person he can find exactly what his plans are for the upcoming week. Just let Montero and Degrom know they will be starting and keep everyone else outside of the organization guessing. Stop letting our opponents form a strategy because they know things days in advance!

Not true. He gave up 2 runs but then Downs came in and held the lead for a 6-5 win.

Dear God, please don't let this be the beginning of the end for the Mets this season...please please!

@greekgod  Tejajda should be DFAed. The fact that he's still here shows both the inability of the Mets to spend money and the thinness of their farm system.

Grandy should sit against tough lefties. You;re dreaming if you think they will bench him considering his contract. Besides, who would play instead? Chris Young, Mr. 200 BA?

TheJMan
TheJMan

@slainte2
like to see this team realize they're an 80-win team AT BEST regardless of who they play -- c'mon, the range of possible total wins is pretty limited

go balls and play Flores, Campbell every day. Platoon Granderson and Chris Young -- they are virtually the same player [i know they won't but doesn't mean they shouldn't]

Duda and Tejada are worthless--we know how that movie ends

Dump Valverde, Montero in the pen, de Grom starting, bring up Vic Black and tell Wheeler he's on notice and go to war

So then where would you put wright ? Batting cleanup ? Because I would like to see that happen As well

BringBackDaveTelghe

@slainte2 I wouldn't touch Murphy.

Lineup construction doesn't matter nearly as much as you think, but Murphy is such a weird player I can see him trying to change what he's doing in a different spot.  It's working for him now, don't give him much more to think about.

I'd give Lagares an everyday shot in the leadoff spot, and just bench EYJ.  It's a farce this guy is playing every day.  CY may not be all that much better an option, but we need the power and the LF spot is such an obvious area for this team to upgrade.

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@slainte2 He's not doing enough to run away with the job but not doing too little to lose his job. He's about as league average as it comes right now.

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

@slainte2 I am a bit too.  To be fair, he's getting jerked around and not playing vs any lefties.  I imagine it's hard to sustain any kind of groove doing that and being benched for days at a time.

The other issue though, his numbers SHOULD look great if he's not seeing that many lefties.  If you're looking to upgrade this team by position, I think my order would be SS, LF, 1b.

It's scary that of those 3 positions of need, one is the most important defensive spot, and two are where you expect two of the best hitters on the team to be.

hankypanky
hankypanky

Just as disappointing is the fact that Flores was never considered an option for first. Doing it now would be counter-productive, since they would be jerking the kid around at this stage.

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@slainte2  After looking at it, the Mariners have a pretty good problem to have. They have another kid down in Tacoma with Franklin who is also a SS/2B who is hitting .372 with some pop. But it looks like neither one is very good with the glove unfortunately! Reading into them it looks like they both are kicking the ball all over the field down in AAA! I guess I just answered my own question!

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@slainte2  Franklin is killing it down in AAA, .376. But all you hear is he isn't a shortstop. And if you look at his games down in AAA, he's played 15 games at short, 3 as a DH and then the other 9 split between 2B and the OF. The kid is a bat first prospect for sure.

I think it says a lot that despite how bad Miller has played and how well Franklin is hitting that they haven't brought him up.

gregf

@Rimo Chaloney Boy, my thinking exactly ... he was hot when they brought him up ... perfect timing to try him now that he has rusted for a week to 10 days ... sheesh!

impossible to trade ... unless they want to eat $55+ million

awful signing -- they should go back in the comments on this site, back in December, and find all the supporters of the signing and ban them from posting for life

Do you really think our opponents are that worried about our offense?  UM throw strikes (or balls) they swing and miss

@AgeesCatch @slainte2

is there any debate that Lagares should be in there every day?  100% agree.

On Flores ... i think he should play every day too, but don't think he can be long term answer at SS.  I think he needs to play every day between now and end of July, regardless of his defense, to showcase his bat, let him shine, then trade him for a better fitting player.

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@TheJMan @slainte2I disagree, Duda is not worthless. They're going to ride him for 2014. I have a feeling we will be seeing someone from outside the organization at SS before the trade deadline. There's no way they platoon Chris Young and Granderson, ever. They're making way too much money to not play everyday. EYJ should be on the bench, getting a start spelling each of the 3 once per week.

slainte2

@BringBackDaveTelghe @slainte2

i think it would nudge some guys out of comfort zone, a little psychology shot.  I think protection behind and maybe basestealing threat in front of Lagares might result in more fastballs in zone for him ... if true that he chases out of zone, having him down in order with crap behind him means no reason ever, ever to give him anything to hit.

The rest of the lineup ... i agree.  Bunch of station to station strikeout guys, what difference does it make.

But Dave ... something's gotta give.

On EY ... i agree with you ... i am so over this guy as a starter.  Instant offense, PR (even PH) in late game?  Sure.  Super-sub? yep.  But, to me, exposed as not a starter.

@BringBackDaveTelghe @slainte2

idk, doesn't seem like there are even that many LHP starters in MLB anymore (is that my imagination?).  I think Lucas is out of excuses, time to hit.

@TheJMan @slainte2

you are right, awful signing.

Maybe somebody in AL East?  Albatross for albatross?  you see where i am going, Jose Reyes and his fragile legs and 70M contract (after this season) for Grandy and his 45M contract.

There are lots of reasons not to go backwards to get Jose.  But value there for us, and that might be only way to dodge the Grandy bullet.

TheJMan

@slainte2

I didn't put Lagares .. because after last week's debacle and Terry's unhinged press conference.. i would hope the debate is over -- win or lose, he's gotta be in there

@Dana Smith @TheJMan@slainte2
I said I know they won't -- but doesn't mean it's not a smart move -- they are the SAME OFFENSIVE PLAYER -- marginal power in Citi, low OBP, high strike outs

and if Duda goes above these stats--contact me, i will buy you a dinner at a restaurant of your choice

.250, 17HR, 65 RBIs

all of which are WORTHLESS for your first baseman

let's move on from these losers

@Joe Wenzel @BringBackDaveTelghe@slainte2

i think Sandy has been calling the shots, which is probably why TC says one thing (what he thinks) and does another (what he is told) so often.  It would be really crappy of Sandy to fire TC for just carrying out his orders.

And Wilpons won't ever fire Sandy ... forget about the Selig connection, this ownership team doesn't have balls to challenge the career baseball guys in FO.

But you know what, who knows what's going on, and who is really making decisions... just feels like nothing will ever change.

TheJMan

@Joe Wenzel @BringBackDaveTelghe@slainte2
we need a player revolt like the Angels did

you see him squirming with the questions about Lagares in that pre-game presser?

he's losing it ... and he might be completely insane

seriously time to move on--but they won't. bad teams keep making bad decisions

domtoretto

@AgeesCatch @hankypanky  The reason he only had 1 start in 7 games is because he got the flu and couldn't play.  He's healthy now and Terry fell back in love with Tejada after he "hit some balls with authority" when Flores was unavailable.
