I can’t wait to see how first base plays itself out…

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

Let’s say Ike Davis hits well in Spring Training. He wins the job at first base. Lucas Duda either becomes a bat-off-the-bench or he’s optioned to Triple-A. Ike is the man…

How confident will you be that his preseason production will carry over in to April? If it does, how long will it need to be sustained? If it doesn’t, how long does he get?

I have no idea how Sandy Alderson intends to handle this situation. It makes me wonder if, say both Davis and Duda do well in March, will Alderson again try to trade Davis before demoting Duda, given what we know of how he marketed Ike this past winter?

If they both struggle, then what happens? Does Daniel Murphy move to first, with Eric Young Jr. sliding in at second? If so, what happens to Ike and Duda? Do both get demoted? Does one get traded? Do they cut Davis?

Also, where does Josh Satin fit in all of it?

This is going to be very, very interesting to see play out. It’s going to be the most intriguing story of the spring, no doubt…

If Ike is terrible in Spring Training how long will the Mets drag their feet on cutting him?  I'd love to to see the guy produce but c'mon, we've been watching him struggle for YEARS.

Just as soon as the Mets begin to have confidence in Davis, he will disappoint. That's been his pattern.

Play Davis and hope he can hit. Duda is a defensive liability anywhere on the field. It's not passable, it's not coming along. He's a DH in a league without the DH.

Good things happened with Satin in the lineup. Maybe it's not quantifiable, maybe it wasn't even his doing. But Duda doesn't even know what foot to have on the bag. You might as well be playing with 8 and a bucket at first to catch the ball.

Who ever emerges as the front runner, if either  one goes into slump, Mets need to have a short leash..and act upon plan c for 1b.

ike will get cut by spring training duda and satin will be the 1B men face it ike supporters he sucks there is no more upside if he has not figured it out now he never will we aint got time no more

Plain and simple, Satin is right handed bat off the bench that can eat up left handers. Duda, from what I've seen is bat that has pop and has the ability to draw walks. I can't see Duda and Ike on the same 25 man roster unless Duda plays a corner outfield position or out does it in spring training. The bats for the bench this spring training are gonna be fun to watch now with Turner gone. Satin and EYJ should be automatically added to the roster as those key pieces off the bench. Let's see Kirk, Dekker, and Brown battle out a spot. 7 relievers and 4 bench spots will be battled out.

3  strike Ike can't hit for his life and Duda is a DH both are mis fit toys and should never get the opportunity to start here again.  Tejada is another player who should have never seen the light o day.  Our management is sub standard and our owners are incompetents which makes for a disaster. .500 season ?  only if all teams get kidnapped by Al Queda !

Paul Kersey

Mets have to get some production out of 1st base in order to hhave a chance at a .500 season. IMHO, ike davis should be the choice as his upside is much higher than duda, who is also a butcher with the glove

This was handled incompetently.  Alderson should never have talked publicly about trading Ike.  Should have quietly done it or released him.  That said, we could get lucky and this thing works out well, but for us, it seldom does and we are left now with the circus that most of us wanted to avoid.  Intriguing is one way to put it, but wouldn't we have preferred that the Mets had a new star first baseman and one or both of Ike and Duda gone.  Then, it wouldn't matter as much what they did later on, if they break out.  Now, we are depending on it.  Let's put it this way, it's a lot easier to find a 1B in the offseason than during the season.  I would have probably signed Michael Morse, nontendered Ike and not signed Chris Young.  If Duda hits, Morse plays OF, if he doesn't, then Morse is at 1B and Granderson and the current battle for playing time in the OF is less of an issue.

Why does anyone factor in or worry about Josh Satin in the first base equation?  He is no more than a singles hitter who plays first base. If he is available to give Duda, Ike or Murph a day off fine but what a mess if he gets regular playing time we are in trouble.

The competition between Ike and Duda is a joke. Both players are AAA players at best. You cannot put too much stock in their spring training production. Ike had a decent spring last year hitting over .300 only to be at the game on opening day to see him go 0-5 with 4k's. No Met's fans want to see that again. I much rather see them move Flores to 1st but that's not going to happen. Not that I want to see this either but if both Lagares and EYJ have a hot spring I would move Murph to 1st and have EYJ at 2nd. It's not ideal but at least more tolerable.

Really Matt...you have to stop this. Your overenthusiastic posts are just so phony that it hurts this blog. What was once a great place for Met fans to come and discuss their thoughts and feelings about the team is turning into a Wilpon/Alderson press release. You're hurting your own credibility now.

3 weeks, if he's under .200 in April and looking competely lost like he did last April. However, I doubt that happens. He hit very well in ST last year and then something goofy happened, he tinkered with his swing and then apparently saw his confidence take a nose dive. I'm guessing this time around, he'll stick with one approach and sink or swim.

My enthusiasm for how this 1st base situation plays out is comparable to looking at my results after pooping. I may be surprised enough to talk about it but generally it just needs to be flushed it away.

I reall hope Ike wins the job. He has the highest ceiling by far. Satin is a nice bench bat (against lefties) and Duda can do everything Ike does but less. Thats assuming Ike figures it all out which is by no means a definite thing

Satin---no Speed...No Glove...plays ONLY 1b....a RH hitter without power. That makes him a UNICORN---except,  we'd all LOVE a Unicorn!  RH, defensive statues without power we do not love.

The 25th guy on the Roster needs to solve some problems---serve as a "caddy" late inning glove---a power threat as a pinch hitter...a Problem Solver for double switches,  etc...this guy Creates Problems...he doesn't solve them.

Now the mets have to sign Drew because they won't get Jed Lowrie or Hanley Ramirez next year.

I really believe it is totally up in the air. I think they would trade Ike, if they could get something decent. But if anyone truly stands out, I think they will start the season. For the right side its Satin vs. Flores, and the left Ike vs. Duda. ** Duda makes 2 million less, so have to imagine it has an impact. My question is if Ike has a monster spring, do we trust again for the 3rd time to start the season as 1b?

I'm fine with Davis at 1B and think he can figure it out. I am more concerned about the lack of production from a corner outfield spot...you need Chris Young in CF and a true cleanup hitter as your other corner (Granderson being the other of course)

Duda loses 8 pounds when he farts..he spends two weeks at conditioning camp and all of a sudden the word agile is getting thrown around. I'd rather watch Davis get a hold of one once every 30 at bats than watch Duda take 2-1 fastballs all year and get praised for his discipline. Spare me.

Josh Satin is over rated and a bench bat at best, even mentioning where he would stand is going over board, the guy is not that good.

mike23

If Daniel Murphy is playing 1b for mets in 2014 than the season has officially fallen apart, what a horrible defense with him at 1b and EYJR at 2b to go with Tejada's weak offense at SS... Yikes!

zoddie

Why is Duda a DH? Where are you getting that from?

Which star first baseman did you want

If it is hard to find a 1b during the season, that should increase Ike and Duda s trade value, no?

Agreed that Sandy shouldn't have been so public.

zoddie

Because he kills lefties? Because he always gets on base? Because of Ike and Duda's extreme platoon splits?

@Steven Molello I know it seems that way, but the truth is that Matthew has always been this way on his blog.  There just is the appearance of a conflict of interest:)  Back in 2004, when the team still wasn't that great, but was starting to head in the right direction, Matthew was optimistic. Sometimes, he's too optimistic for me too, but there are others on here that don't work for SNY that are all rosy about the Mets too.  Some are just excited to see how things play out, especially in the spring.  Matthew has been very critical of Mets management on here, too.  But sure, when anyone is overly optimistic about the way things are going, it can be quite annoying, whether it is Matthew or someone else.

@7up17togo Curling is played on ice, therefore, it is in the Winter Olympics, because you know, there's lots of ice during the winter. On the other hand, Baseball is played on grass and by millions in one form or another on most of the planet, and yet it was cut from the Summer Olympics. Yeah, suuuuuure, that one made sense.

zoddie

Do you watch games or follow this team? Satin is a third baseman that can play first and may be able to fill in at second.

I guess you hated Keith Hernandez, too, since he had no power.

mike23

@anthony G. Decesare  i'd offer drew 2 years 8 million per take it or leave it... mets need to be done with this so they can either show confidence in Tejada or move on go with drew.

@vince1234  I agree, guy is a bench bat and is talked about way too much around here.

Jon Forsyth

@Zach Goeringer  I can see 20 steals from Duda. He's much more agile now. Which means now he runs faster, jumps higher, and can leap tall buildings in a single bound.

@mike23  reminds me of NIck Evans. Where did he end up, out in Arizona's minor league system?

Jon Forsyth
Jon Forsyth

@Biggie  where are you going to find a better 2B than murphy right now? And i don't mean in all of baseball, i mean available. He is very underrated and his defense isn't as horrible as it once was, its servicable now and his bat makes up for it.

cver
cver

@zoddie Matthew is saying how intriguing it is, but I would rather have a star first baseman, but you are right, which one?:)  Michael Morse is not a star and maybe just a change of scenery guy and certainly not as good of a defensive first baseman as Ike and maybe Ike works out.  I do know that the fans might even boo him when he's announced on Opening Day and he's going to have to turn them around awfully fast, which he certainly has shown the ability to do.  That said, he also doesn't seem like his psyche is well suited to NY, when things aren't going well - there is carryover from the boos to the bat and vice versa obviously.  Hey, that's human.  But some of these players are super-human and can handle the downs as well as the ups of NYC.  It's just deja vu all over again to have the same drama play out.  History could repeat itself or patience could prevail.  I would have rather Alderson turned the page.

zoddie

Except in 2012 and the rest of his career, of course.

He's actually a platoon bat. Key difference.

@stemog @mike23  he had a hot streak but fell back to earth late when pitchers figured him out, he is a decent back up at best but i'm not sure he would even be on the roster of many other teams in mlb..

stemog
stemog

@mike23 @stemogI should've been more clear: he can hit lefties well. You're right, he's a backup on this team, but probably wouldn't be on most others.
