Daniel Murphy, David Wright, Rob Brantly

How many games will this roster win?

Here are your 2014 New York Mets…

Starting Pitchers: Dillon Gee, Bartolo Colon, Zack Wheeler and Jenrry Mejia.

Relievers: Bobby Parnell, Jose Valverde, Jeurys Familia, Carlos Torres, Gonzalez Germen, Scott Rice and John Lannan.

Infielders: David Wright, Travis d’Arnaud, Anthony Recker, Davis, Duda, Josh Satin, Daniel Murphy, Ruben Tejada and Omar Quintanilla.

Outfielders: Chris Young, Juan Lagares, Eric Young Jr., Curtis Granderson and Andrew Brown.

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

I like it. I don’t love it. I’d prefer to know what’s up with first base, and I’d be a lot more confident with someone other than Tejada at shortstop. I think Ruben will be fine, and I still think he has the potential to get back to what he was a couple of years ago, but he leaves a lot to be desired after watching him the last 18 months. That said, if he gets it together, if first base can somehow result in average production, if d’Arnaud hits how he’s capable of hitting and if Granderson can deliver 20 or so home runs, with this team’s pitching, I think they can push .500. I think the 74.5 Under-Over in Vegas is very light. This roster is better than that. I don’t think it’s a playoff team as currently constructed, but with some momentum, better play at home and another bat, I see them as .500. I’m voting 80-82 in the following poll, but hoping for so much more…

P.S. I also routed for the Brooklyn Dodgers. But that team I loved and they loved to be the bums from Brooklyn. We all loved them because they were ours and played the most wonderful and zany games ever.

I think that during and after the next 89 loses we will only see this one as normal. I had to call my best friend and beg for the season tickets that I gave him last year. I just want to keep him from the pain they will bring. I even told him I would give him my shamrock (boat) and some fishing poles on the hope he might just burn the tickets and go fishing at Montauk. But alas he continued in his blindness to see my gift of mercy. Oh well we can always as New Yorkers are prone to do blame Bush.

Anyone who thinks this team can win over 90 games needs to have their license suspended.

first on the agenda, lets get rid of the hitting coach. maybe some of the ballplayers will improve with another hitting coach

if first base works itself out and TDA can hit a little bit i think 80+ wins is attainable.  I love our pitching, our outfield is improved over last yr and we have murph david and grandy in the middle of our order.

Depends how long these guys will last throughout the year. Either via injury, trade and having certain players brought up from the farm. Once Syndergaard comes up, this team will take on a whole new dimension. If no major injuries, then I say 83 or 84. If major injuries, 62 wins and so long, Sandy.

What's too like about this roster?  No young studs, underachieves that Alderson is praying perform above their career numbers and DW.  The bullpen will absolutely stink.  The starting pitching hasn't proved it can make it through a season without breaking down.  The bench is paper thin.  74.5 win prediction thin?  Seriously?  The depth behind a subpar starting lineup is nonexistent.  Other than that, "I like it".  So typical of what we have been beaten down to expect as fans.

I'm glad he thinks Reuben will be fine. Only one of the worst short stops in baseball, but he'll be fine.

He "likes it," but admits they're .500 at their absolute best.  I don't get it.

Where does Cerrone get off claiming he "likes" this roster? The guy is a complete shill. This team is bad, and it is going to lose a ton of games. I am sick and tired of so-called Met fans playing along with this garbage. It's time for mutiny on this perpetually sinking ship.

The team as currently constituted looks shaky, especially at FB, SS and the bullpen. However, they won 74 games last year with one of the worst OFs in baseball. Any significant upgrade from CYoung, Grandy, Ike or d"Arnaud will probably mean more wins. Remember, we had 1-10 Shaun Marcum last year, and Harvey/Wheeler only won 16 games between them last year. I think Colon/Wheeler should be able to do at 25 wins, maybe even 28-30.

A .500 record is certainly possible. Then again, these are the Mets.....

If the Wilpons sell the team, that's worth 10 more wins right there.

Well, no Murph today as his wife is in labor.  First of a bunch of games EY and Lagares will both play in today.

David Wright can hit. Murphy is a .280 batter. The rest?

This team better hope the pitching stays healthy, otherwise they could lose a lot.

And I am as loyal a Mets fan as there is, but I am not delusional like some. This team is dreadful.

If someone is "fine," why would you want someone else?  The problem is that Tejeda has not shown to be "fine" at SS.  If he was "fine" at SS, people wouldn't be upset that he was there.  But, helping the "keep up the mediocrity mentality," he is now "fine" at SS.  1B AT BEST fine.  Also, the bullpen is one arm short.

This team got in a groove in mid-May with new blood.  I wish they weren't in "we will get to SS eventually etc." mode again, so we could start out of the gate better.  But, it's OD, and all.  If the weather holds.

Same cast of characters coming into this year. Besides Wright, there are no top flight players. Can't summon much enthusiasm when compared to the rest of the league. 70 to perhaps 74 seem the target. Another do little season under the helm of Wilpon and Alderson. Granderson will hit 25 homers, tops..

@hashburry  well legares and tda are supposed to be our young studs, lets give them a some abs this year until we can say other wise.  I think our startin pitching is fine bc we have so much depth in the minors.  our outfield is much improved over last yr.  I think if first base works itself out and tda hits a little bit we can be an 80+ win team

Or a perfectly average shortstop in 2011 and 2012. Who knows which Tejada we'll get?

zoddie

Because when Harvey went down, we knew contending would have to wait a year. This year will be like 1984. Foundation gets laid. 2015 can be like 1985. Great year, just short of first place (only now with wild cards). Hopefully 2016 can be like 1986.

I'd be pleased with .500 as well this year.

@ifti99  you remember why Harvey/Wheeler only won 16 games?  Harvey should have won 15-20 with the way he pitched.  The p.o.s. hitters on this team couldn't score a run for him. I will never forget Ike failing to get a runner in from third with less than two out TWICE in the Miami series last year.

yeah, Ike, Tejada and Young might have nice years.  they also might be the most ineffective players in the game.  we shall see.

@helloboy They could have saved they wasted money spent on CY, let EY play every day, and used the savings to pay Drew or Morales.

@jlga  if everything goes their way, it's an 85-87 win team.  since when does everything go the Mets way? the probability is the mid 70's.  .500 is a reasonable goal, and I'd probably be pleased with that.

i'd feel A LOT better if I had any idea how they pick up the stud hitter necessary to make a run next year. what's the plan exactly for improving what will likely be another anemic offense this year???

or are we focusing on 2016?  (that's the key to Sandy's plan.  we're always, permanently, two years away)

Sorry Granderson is a top flight player, even if you want to dismiss him.  He has been a better run producer for his career than Wright has been.

zoddie
zoddie

Then who would be playing the OF today if we didn't have CYoung? Murphy being out kind of illustrates exactly why we DO need both Youngs.

zoddie
zoddie

Trading excess pitching, probably. Hope Puello and D'Arnaud become good hitters. Find a place for Flores. But stud hitters are hard to find these days.

hashburry

@helloboy  Apples and oranges.  Granderson will not produce to his Yankee numbers in this lineup and this stadium.  Wright was a HOF run producer with a lineup around him his first 5 years.

Olerud42

@helloboy  Granderson has been maybe half the player Wright has been. He's a solid ballplayer and has had some excellent seasons but let's not go crazy.

Michael Paulsen

@helloboy Is that why he's rated the 40th best outfielder and number 153 overall? I suppose with a little stretch of imagination you are right lol

Ed Yano

Don't know where you got your numbers, but they but Granderson in the top half of OF and the top 20%overall.Not sure what your point was but you showed he is pretty good.
