Henry P, reader of MetsBlog:
How in the world is Juan Lagares not nominated for a Gold Glove? He was incredible in center field last year. Is he not as good as I think he is? Also, do you think he’s going to be the starting center fielder next season?

The Gold Glove is mostly meaningless, at least when it comes to who is the best defender at their respective position. Instead, it’s more of a popularity contest that tends to favor reputation more than anything. So, this should in no way impact your view of Lagares.
Lagares was spectacular this past season. He saved 26 runs, which was among the best in baseball, he displayed a laser-like arm and did it with incredible range, gliding to line drives and fly-balls hit all around him. In a perfect world, the Mets acquire more power and better hitters at other positions and Lagares starts in center field, giving his bat time to develop.
