HoJo: ‘Ike can still be 30-home run guy’

Howard Johnson, recently appointed hitting coach for the Seattle Mariners, believes Ike Davis can be fixed.

“I think Ike can still be a 30-home run guy,”’ Johnson said, to John Harper of the New York Daily News. “No doubt.”

Johnson saw Davis hitting in Triple-A Las Vegas last season, when he was serving as the hitting coach for Seattle’s Triple-A team.

“My jaw dropped when I saw him swing the bat,” he said. “I couldn’t believe it. He didn’t look anything like the guy I remembered. I saw about eight things right away.”

Johnson also talked about the Mets current approach to hitting, which he doesn’t agree with.

“Be aggressive, try to dictate what happens at the plate, that will be a constant,” he said.

Johnson would prefer hitters to take a more aggressive approach at the plate, “as long as they get a pitcher where they’re looking.”

Harper also notes that HoJo and the Mets have made peace after he was let go as hitting coach in 2011.

Yeah, as soon as he leaves NY. He's gonna be the next Chris Davis only with a better glove

both really are not long term solutions though.

Ike has the higher ceiling between he and Duda but Duda is a more sure bet to at least hit something like .250/.350/.425 where Ike could just as likely hit .150 in April and May again.

Of course he can. He's one year removed from a 30 home run year. Sometimes people forget that..
