Have the Mets tried to get Mark Trumbo from the Angels?

The White Sox, D-Backs and Angels are discussing a deal that would send Mark Trumbo to Arizona (Law, Shaikin, Dec. 10).

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

This off-season, I’ve had league insiders describe Trumbo to me as ‘one dimensional,’ ‘overrated,’ and, ‘not worth the asking price.’ The way I understand it, the Mets asked about him last summer, when the Angels had some interest in Jon Niese. However, the Mets never viewed him as the ideal player to bat behind David Wright, and their interest was “limited,” at best.

Today’s reports indicate the Angels may be get Hector Santiago and Tyler Skaggs for Trumbo, which would be a steal. Thankfully, there is no evidence the Mets are interested and I’ve seen no reports or rumors linking them to the Angels. I like Trumbo, but that’s a lot to give up to get him.

I don't get the love for Mark Trumbo.  Trumbo is basically Dave Kingman, except Trumbo strikes out even more.

Is that a fan question from Cerrone?

Ugh, we needed the power. Davis, you better bring it next year.

Well, there goes Trumbo. Traded to the D-Backs in a 3 team trade with the White Sox. Commence operation Trumbo Drop.

Trumbo would be a excellent addition to the line up.

According to francessa

Everyone is saying how streaky he is, but look at Trumbo's numbers year after year...

2011: 65 runs scored, 29 home runs, and 87 RBI's

2012: 66 runs scored, 32 home runs, and 95 RBI's

2013: 85 runs scored, 34 home runs, and 100 RBI's

...and isn't a free agent until 2017..............why would we not want him???

Sandy better step in and stop this trade and get Trumbo for us.

i really don't like the mets' gameplan for getting anything done. sandy has been pretty clever with a few trades over the years, but nothing else they've done impresses me.

it appears the mets have a one size fits all approach for their team, which is the complete opposite of what they should be doing. i'm sure i'm not the first to say this, but why do they value obp so much? i understand it for the leadoff hitter, but i see so many people complain about a guy like murphy (for instance) without focusing on what the guy can do. the mets seem to think everyone they need will hit for power, play great defense, get on base, etc, but the players who are like that are usually held on to and locked up by their teams.

i'm not trying to defend trumbo, but i think he'd make a very solid #5 hitter in our lineup at first. Not exactly sure what the angels want for him, but if it took niese and another mid level prospect or 2, i think a deal could be negotiated. i can honestly live with tejada at ss if they get another big bat, or i can live with ike/duda (i prefer ike) at 1b if they upgrade ss. ss is very thin right now though, and has a lot of free agents next year, so it makes sense to go after 1b now, get a ss next year and someone else (big splash player for the OF maybe?) and put it all together. Unfortunately i'm not sure the mets can fix all their holes without surrendering too much of the future

Yeah, 30 HRs and 90 RBI per season costs!

It is funny how sandy values power but wont consider trumbo

Or you have to do is hear Jeff Wilpon talk about the Mets and you understand why the Mets are the way they are.

I wouldn't give up our young pitching for Trumbo. He is a very streaky hitter.

Wow the Wilpons have to go. They need to sell this team. Please please !!!!!

I love that he had to talk to MLB insiders to figure out that Trumbo is one dimensional. Geez..

he is too good for the mets.  don't worry first base will be either ike or duda once more!! sandy is a lot of talk, and honestly he disguises what he says so well in interviews that who the hell knows what he's looking for. Lot of talk, i think granderson was the last move, and they will sign some pitcher to minor league deals.

I hope sandy picks up the phone - Trumbo is worth it to see what they would want from us.  Young, power, can play 1b or OF, and dosnt get paied much ----> um exactly what we need.

Don't get the love for Santiago and Skaggs

Both back end starters (4 or 5) or long relief in pen and there giving up a 30+ hr guy in Trumbo

D Backs need power in there lineup and they got it

D Backs would be winners of this trade

how are there no rumors about the Mets trying to get Franklin or Ackley from The M's?  Franklin would be a huge upgrade over Tejada and the M's have an infield surplus.

Please let me know WHEN they do get him...

When the mets struggle offensively with minor improvement from granderson, lets see how thankful u r

Trumbo is one-dimensional and definitely not worth any of the players being discussed in the three way deal.

We'd be setting strike out records with both Trumbo and Granderson.

If the Angels get those chips (Santiago and Skaggs) this deal is a steal for them.

Francesco Monastra

Yea if I was a gm I would be going after Trumbo hard if I need power

Santiago's numbers look pretty good, and he is left-handed, 25 yo

Skaggs was a top five pitching prospect by just about everyone at the start of last season. Even if last year was a disappointment, he still has tremendous upside. He's in a very similar situation to where Shelby Miller was this time last year.

@Francesco Monastra Skaggs is a 22 year old left handed first round draft pick.   It would be silly to look at his first 65 innings and call him a back end starter.

Arizona would also get some good prospects as well

Very happy if I was a d back fan, great trade if it happens

The Mets already have a Mark Trumbo.  His name is Ike Davis.

@roman411 Couldn't agree more. If the Angels walk away with both of those SP's in a deal for Trumbo than they would have pulled off the best deal of the offseason...period!!! I would love him to hit in the 5 hole for us behind Wright and Granderson but not for that price

matt520

@Francesco Monastra Skaggs has huge upside. Could be a front end lefty for years to come. Small sample size is misleading, sky is the limit for him
