Harvey is going to have a life, like it or not

Matt Harvey avoided being drawn into a 2:30 a.m. brawl at a Manhattan bar on Thursday (NY Post, May 16).

“Matt was there with friends when a fight broke out over a girl between someone in his group and another group at a nearby table,” an eyewitness said. “Matt was right there. Somebody lunged at him and his group, he stepped aside and left. Security broke things up.”

Harvey

Harvey deleted his Twitter account in April after the team asked him to remove a picture of him giving the middle finger to Tommy John surgery, which was photographed by his mom the day he had surgery.

He has been irrationally criticized by local media for being interviewed while attending Rangers and Knicks games at MSG.

“I guess having a life outside of baseball is sometimes not OK,” Harvey said Thursday (Newsday, May 16). “I live my life. I enjoy going to Rangers games. I enjoy going to Knicks games. I’m a big sports fan, so going to games is not something I’m going to change doing. I can’t help what people think.”

SNY’s Jonas Schwartz talked with Harvey at the FanCave on Thursday about the incident, as well as his rehab from Tommy John surgery, and the development of Rafael Montero…

Looks like he's showing poor judgment, not by going out, but in his selection of friends. Jeter went out all the time and had a night life Harvey can only dream about yet you never heard a single story like this. He needs to surround himself with better people

Just be an all star pitcher again.  That's all I care about.

A single, famous and young bachelor in New York.  People ask him to be like Jeter....Jeter was not a saint in the beginning when he was a single, famous and young bachelor in New York.  Wait, didn't Jeter give Jessica Alba herpes??  Great role-model people.

The fact metsblog even posted this is asinine. The Mets are doing an excellent job of running this guy out of town as soon as he's a free agent. I personally love having a pitcher with BALLS and a swagger that he's the best, he's a born leader.

Here's the problem.  Harvey has made some bad choices.  You root for him and want him to do well, but you can't help but feel that knot in your stomach every time someone sticks a mic in his face.   He's been a bit of a loose cannon.  Some guys adapt to the superstar role with ease and grace.  He clearly hasn't.

When it comes to cool in this city it's WWJD, What Would Jeter Do.   If Jeter goes to a club, he has his own VIP room with security.  He keeps the civilians at a safe distance.  Harvey might want to take note.

I can see him leaving as soon as he's able......why would he want to pitch for a team that can't score any runs. The only way met starters can win, is if they pitch a shutout, and that's no guarantee either.

Leave the friggin dude alone, my god.  We don't need an update every time the guy farts in the wrong direction.

OH NO, Harvey went out to a club and there was a fight NEAR him!!  OH THE HUMANITY!!! What are we to do? Asinine...

this is dumb.  why are folks caring so much what a guy does in his off time?  I love that harvey has a personality and is a celebrity.  this guy gives the mets instant credibility. arguing with yankee fans on twitter was dumb.  dating super models, posing for photo shoots, going to nba and nhl games and taking vacations to thailand are all part of the deal.  it's about time we had a stud to take some attention away from the yanks! do you harvey,, don't change a thing.

Geez, leave this kid alone. The kid's going out and having fun, is that a crime? You know how many clubs and bars Jeter's been to, undoubtably in the prescence of scuffles and fights, some involving his security. Where was all the press. There was a fight in a club/bar where havey was, OMG how could that happen. A lot of the media are unathletic geeks who use there pen as a sword.

Cerrone,  I know you know most of the NY media. Tell these guys to get a life and get off are back.

Harvey your the man, keep going out and partying and live your life.

I think Matt Harvey has made a few questionable, immature decisions that he should reconsider.

However, I'm so glad that there is a guy who has guts and fire in the belly. What's gonna happen next year when somebody hits Wright a pitch? Harvey is gonna drill two guys. That is a type of guts that nobody has on this team in decades.

Another thing I like about Harvey is that he refused to listen to the idiots that run this team when they tell him stupid stuff. If he was a position player who could actually hit I be he would tell Sandy and Hudgens to shut the hell up with their "Hunting Strikes" theory.

He was able to walk away from trouble this time. Will he be as lucky the next time?

Glad Harvey took the standby approach, not glad it's the same approach the Mets take to hitting. That's the story I'd like to read about...

Good for you Harvs. The media eventually will move on from these non-controversial "stories". There's a big lull with controversy right now in NY sports so the media maggots latch on to anything (see eg Steve Kerr zzzzzz)

Good for you Matt, glad you made a decision that 90 percent of athletes in sports wouldn't have made!

Let's see, Harvey out with friends, trouble starts, and he leaves.  Where's the problem?

The media criticizing Harvey for the media interviewing Harvey?

I don't get the media's fascination with him. Sheesh.

He sidestepped the trouble and left the situation without altercation.  That sounds more mature than most are giving him credit for.

He didn't shoot himself in the leg or anything.

I feel like Harvey wants out of the Mets organization so badly, but loves New York...he will be a Yankee in time.

Listen, while I agree this is America and people have basic freedoms I can't help but think this guy is going to end up in a really bad situation. Let's face it, there are certain people that seem to find trouble regardless of fault. Hope Matt Harvey isn't one of them.

Put Harvey's years in the majors against Jeter/David Wright. How many times have you heard their names in these situations? I'll tell you, zero, and I'm sure they have plenty of fun. I sense fame has gotten to Harvey too quickly and it's clouding his better judgements.

Just leave him alone. He is as normal as you and me. He is entitled to have a life outside of baseball. Let him go to hockey and basketball games. He isn't playing in them. Geez!!!

@Macacawitz didn't Harvey step aside and leave when the fight broke out?  it wasn't like he got hurt in the fight and ended his season that way.

@Macacawitz  what exactly are these "bad choices" he has made?

@Haig Mathosian Well, let's hope by the time he's able to leave, the Mets will be relevant enough that he'll want to stay.

@Christopher Masiello  Why would Harvey drill two guys if someone hits Wright. This is the National League and he has to get up to bat? What is the stupid stuff the Mets are telling him? Look the Mets can be idiots but all they're trying to do is keep this kid under control. Every team in the league would do the same thing with a star player.

@JimmyFromDBX Look down Jimmy, I just asked raised that issue, not in the somewhat rough way you do, but I agree, David needs to be dropped in the order, at least temporarily.

@Bob G @Christopher Masiello  "keep this kid under control". Is he out of control? This is a non-issue and they're making it like he brought a gun to a club shot his leg and beat up reporters....

He's talking about the issue his group had in the bar a 2 in the morning what are u talking about

Bob G
Bob G

@dreamer3kx @Bob G  Because I see a pattern. Harvey has had twitter issues, giving people the finger, fighting with the Mets over his re-hab. He's had a very short stint of success and he's young. Maybe your 25 years old and you haven't been around to see athletes with these patterns of behavior end up in trouble but it happens frequently. The reason guys like Jeter/Wright and I can name a million other ballplayers who are NEVER in the news have good careers and successful lives is they make good decisions not emotional decisions. They generally (no one is perfect) put themselves in situations where they are less likely to find trouble. I'm not sure Matt is mature enough yet to understand when he has to say to himself "I shouldn't do this"..

kefhrny17
kefhrny17

Dude, he's young, he's going to do stupid stuff. What happened last night should not be a big deal, and he wasn't giving people the finger on twitter, he was giving the finger to TJS. It's so asinine that this is what this organization is worried about instead of the weak triple a team they put out every night. Non issue IMO

Bob G
Bob G

@Brian Webster @dreamer3kx @Bob G  Thanks, yes I forgot to mention that fact. What if someone in the other group had a weapon?

We also know that there's going to be some jerk out there at some point who recognizes Matt and wants to F with him. Sorry, but when you're in a bar at 2:30 am this stuff happens. There is a price when your a celeb and unfortunately it does limit your ability to function like everyone else. Yes, that is unfair, but that's the world we live in. Let's hope Matt lives and learns

@Steve Clifford @Bob G  I have every basis to form an opinion. As a matter of fact, my opinion is you're an idiot..thanks for your comment.

@Bob G you really have no basis to form an opinion....You want him to fit your opinion so badly..the fact that you are discussing what he does on his rehab assignments shows you need a life...
