Last week on ESPN 1050, Terry Collins said, in his view, Josh Thole is a ‘No. 1 catcher.’
Sandy Alderson has said, while he feels Thole is capable of being an everyday catcher, the team is thin at the position, and will likely try to acquire additional catchers, ‘both at the major league level and at Triple-A.’
In a post to Mets Today, Joe Janish looks at potential free-agent, back-up catchers and determines that Greg Zuan might be the best fit, “if he’s not too expensive and is willing to play for a team not likely to be in the playoff hunt.”
This past weekend, Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times said, “It’s obvious that C Dioner Navarro is done, either nontendered or dumped in a minor trade (by the Rays), based on his play for his $2.1 million pay and the way he deserted the team when left off the playoff roster.”
Henry Blanco is a free agent. He was said to be great in the clubhouse and did a lot of work with Thole and the pitching staff. But he’ll be 40 years old next season, he did not hit and had all sorts of shoulder issues last season, and so I just don’t see the team bringing him back, even though he still wants to play and is likely to sign an inexpensive, one-year deal.
Rod Barajas, Josh Bard, Gerald Laird, Chad Moeller, Bengie Molina, A.J. Pierzynski, Yorvit Torreala, Matt Treanor and Jason Varitek, as well as Zaun, are all free agents this off season.
