Gonzalez Germen to DL, deGrom promoted

The Mets have placed reliever Gonzalez Germen on the disabled list with a virus.

RHP Jacob deGrom will be promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas before Tuesday’s game against the Yankees.

DeGrom, 25, will pitch in relief, despite only working as a starting pitcher during his professional career.

In seven starts with Las Vegas this season, he is 4-0 with a 2.58 ERA.

Sandy: Terry, Katz is thinking of getting out, Fred's getting nervous, thinks he might lose majority control.

Terry: What can I do?

Sandy: It's simple, we're going to bring up DeGrom. Get the fans excited, just like with Montero... try to fill up the ballpark tomorrow night.

Terry: Yeah, but Sandy I can't dress 26 guys.

Sandy: oh c'mon you've been around this game long enough, isn't somebody walking around there with a pulled muscle, or something?

Terry: Well uh, not really... oh wait a minute, I think I just heard something. Somebody's walking by....

Terry: Hey Gonzalez, do me a favor, sneeze a little.

Terry: You know, say, AH-choo... and make it loud.

Gonzalez: uh, o.k. skipper.

Gonzalez ((thinking to himself)) "muy loco hombre."

Gonzalez: AH-choo!

Terry: Gonzalez, I think you better take a seat, you don't look so hot.

Terry to Sandy: Sandy, problem solved!

must be one heck of a virus for him to go on the DL

Looking forward to seeing deGrom pitch. From his minor league reports, he sounds like he can have a solid career in the majors.

Mejia needs to enbrace the relief role. It's his future w the mets. Hooefully he can close . Niese, gee, Harvey, wheeler, syndergaard, montero is already over 5

The way Collins runs the pitching staff there should be no starting pitchers. Only relievers and none allowed to throw more than 30 pitches in a game. This team is going nowhere until he is canned.

I was afraid of sending Mejia to the pen, partially because I think Mejia can do better than he has but mostly because I thought the replacement would be Dice-K.  Replacing him with Montero and doing it now is fantastic.  Mejia throwing a solid pen performance last night was great and deGrom in the pen is great to see as well.  Now if we only had a SS to bring up that could hit.

with no money to spend in 2014, this sounds like the way they have to play:  burn these kids' option year on a merry-go-round from Vegas to Queens (big EFFIN merry-go-round).   Wally won't like it, but ultimately, the 51's being 30-11 (or whatever) doesn't mean much.  I think it's becoming clear Sandy has had to abandon the whole 'save the Super 2's' philosophy...

It's good to see the Young guys get their chance, the only negative is TC will kill their confidence!

Shouldn't there be a sinker ball pitcher in the rotation? Also can't the Mets use Farnsworth and/or Thorton as sinker ball pitchers out of the pen

A roster spot has to open for Montero - my guess is Valverde is released

Must give SA credit. I didn't think he would do all this. But he's finally not worrying about developing but he's trying to win. About time.

With Familia pitching well, and Mejia and deGrom being added to it the bullpen, it could become very young and good.

Yea I'm cool w young arms coming up. Looks like a lot of starters need to be converted to the pen

Sounds like DeGrom is here to stay. But what kind of virus gets u on the DL? Im guessing that Montero gets promoted Weds and Valverde gets demoted. Then hoe long is it gonna take for them to promote Vic Black? He should get the shot at CL and rotate Mejia and Famillia in the 8th.

Farnsworth obviously can't close.  They should try Familia or Mejia.  Both have much more upside and just stuff in general.

Akeel Morris added another two scoreless innings, striking out four. Opponents are now hitting .104 against Morris this season.

this guy has sick numbers in A ball.

@specialk I would like to see both of them gone too....but realistically only

one will be gone when Montero is officially added....I have to think it is going to be Papa Valverde...which is a good thing.  Farnsworth will be there in German on the DL.

@kefhrny17 If these kids get the job done- it won't be an issue.  Every manager is going to make head scratching moves- but TC's been bringing a knife to a gun fight most nights since he's been here.  You kill him for burning out arms- but starters don't go deep into games anymore and his pen has been completely unreliable- not just this year but every year.  So when he finds a hot hand out there he rides it.  Especially when this team has such a small margin for error- you get a lead late in a game or if the game is close- you want to get your best guy out there to keep it that way.  Its a very difficult position to be in- not wanting to give games away and balancing the needs of one or two guys against the collective team.  Then factor in your job is on the line as well.

Super2 is based on service time. The Mets can send both Montero and DeGrom back to AAA when they reach their innings limit and they could still Qualify for Super 2 status. They could just replace them with Thor and Black for instance. This move does not mean they have abandoned their Super 2 philosophy.

@C.K. Dexter Haven  I thought I heard that Wally said the kids are ready to be promoted? Kind of implies he's happy for it to happen.

@C.K. Dexter Haven Enough with the money already.  Who are you going to spend money on right now anyway?  Is there some massive pool of unsigned free-agent relief pitchers that no other team has tapped into yet?

I disagree, having his players promoted and succeeding is a better barometer of Wally as a coach than his AAA record.

@Victor Triguero that's fine and you're right

but the DL with a virus?

never heard of that one

get rid of Valverde and Farnsworth and then I will start giving him credit for ... rectifying a problem that he created!!

@mikesml What we've seen is there is no correlation between getting injured and pitching out of the bullpen.  Strasburg, Harvey, Jose Frenandez- none of them threw an inning out of the pen prior to injury.  And I'd say DeGrom is still a starter- they're just using him out of the pen.  Eventually he'll be in a starting rotation with the Mets or another club.

Gregg Squire

@mikesml  They all get injured....no matter how much you baby them.  Look around the league this year.  Its a good move.  If the Cardinals can do this with their players and succeed, then why not the Mets?

@Rafael Lara I agree....watching that game last night after he issues a lead off walk and then seeing Valverde starting to get loose made me throw up a little in my mouth.

@nagel100  It's good to know I'm not the only one keeping an eye on Morris.  His control has gotten vastly better as well. His control was not great last season but his arm was live+.  If he can keep the control and the live are Akeel Morris will debut 2016 (my best guess).

@TheJMan  If we can have a guy go down with Valley Fever, we can have somebody on the DL with a virus, no problem.

@TheJMan  How did Alderson "create" the closer going down with an arm injury?

lindro88

Maybe it's time we try something new. Stocking a pen full of old washed up guys doesn't seem to be a winning formula. If we have some quality arms in the pen, maybe we start winning some games. These young guys can't all wind up as starters.
