Gonzalez Germen 1

Germen activated, Rice to the minors

The Mets have made a move following their 6-2 win over the Brewers on Tuesday, sending left-handed reliever Scott Rice down to Triple-A Las Vegas and activating righty reliever Gonzalez Germen off the disabled list (Mets, June 10th).

Germen was placed on the DL on May 5th. He’s appeared in 13 games this season and has a 3.57 ERA.

The 32 year-old Rice, meanwhile, has a 5.93 ERA in 32 appearances to go along with a 1.32 WHIP. His most recent outing came on Sunday, June 8th in San Francisco, when he gave up a double to the Giants’ Brandon Hicks in the eighth inning of a 6-4 Mets loss.

“I’m obviously not happy, but I understand their decision,” Rice said (Newsday, June 10). “I wasn’t getting the job done so they had to make a move.”

Just so you're aware, Rice's WHIP this season is actually 1.976. Just felt it was necessary to point out because that more accurately portrays just how awful Rice has been this season. Obviously the ERA just below 6.00 is atrocious, but a reliever's ERA can sometimes be misleading. But almost 2 baserunners per inning? That is truly abysmal.

Lost all confidence in Rice when he started walking the ballpark. And a lefty specialist who can't retire lefties (with the possible exception of Ryan Howard twelve times a year) does no one any good. Does Germen really add that much to the equation? I don't think so. How about a lefty who is actually capable of retiring right-handed batters? It's been WAY too long.

If he were used strictly as a lefty specialist, he'd still be here.  Another TC casualty.

Rice who?  Sayonara!  I'm surprised it took Sandy this long.  Should have thrown Edgin and Torres on the truck too!

Sorry to hear Rice was sent down. His was a good story. With that said, it was a move that had to be made under the circumstances. Hope Rice can get it together in Vegas and get another chance, which I think he will, especially with this team. If not, he at least got to be in the majors after 14 years in the minors .. Digest that for a while.

When you have a 5.93 ERA, you have to expect that you're getting sent down soon.

It's not like being a hitter on this team  where the worse you hit, the more playing time you get so Terry can "get that guy goin'".

lets take a minute to talk about Cesar Puello I know that numbers don't lie but at the same time I been lucking everyday on the box score for las vegas and the guy is playing twice a week at most. Anyone that has play baseball says that the most difficult thing is not playing everyday playing once a week is not fair to judge these kid he was playing everyday last year and look at the numbers don't tell me that that was steroid there are numbers of former MLB player that did it but never put number just look for Randy Velarde career and tell me if he ever was a big time player. Let me make clear I don't support the steroid use totally against it.

Like to see John Leathersich + Kevin Plawecki promoted to the big circuit by the All-Star game. We should be able to figure who to keep as the 2nd catcher be it Recker or Teagarden by then. We could swap out 1 of the relievers for Big Game John Leathersich to come up. He's been averaging over 2 to one strikeouts per innings pitched at Double A Ball for us presently. He's 24 and looks to have the eye of an Eagle!! Let's Go Met's!! By the way nice Job Murphy, Teagarden + Duda with the 2 big time double plays! Love the Dice Man!! Ice that baby big time Brother! We need you Baby!

This has needed to happen for a long time.  Last night Colins was asked about Rice and Torres being near the top of the NL in appearances and he said that Rice is their "one out lefty specialist."  How can that be when I have counted FIVE appearances this season when he has come in, faced one batter and failed to get him out.  That is absolutely unacceptable.  Waste of a spot in the rotation if a) his job is to get one out and he can't do it and b) he gets taken out of the game after that one batter, using up another bullpen arm.

Rice sucks bigtime. Why he lasted this long is proof that this team is a joke!!!!

Maybe if it wasn't for the typical over-managing, Rice wouldn't have been in there.  Why did Collins have to take Torres out in the first place?  Just because a left-handed hitter was coming up?  Then managers wonder why their bullpens are spent; they keep trotting out five pitchers every night, much of it needlessly.

This bullpen is shaping up, Germen, Familia, Black, Torres, and Mejia. Not too bad if they pitch up to their expectations

@p8erbaghad If he was getting lefties out- he'd still be here.  He's faced 10 righties- which I grant you is probably 10 too many- but lefties are still hitting .260 against him and he's given up 8 walks to lefties for a nice .392 OBP.  If your're a lefty specialist and the guys you're supposed to dominate are getting on at a .390 clip- that's not on the manager.

@Ramon Pena  Well he's been playing near everyday lately and still been awful. The game log I saw only goes back his last 10 games but in those he's got 1 hit in his last 27ABs

You do realize Leathersich was promoted to AAA and couldn't get anyone out.that got him dropped back toAA,now you think he should just skip AAA.Your kidding right?

@Joe Wenzel That's awful reverse logic.  The pen took off when perpetual gasoline cans Valverde and Farnsworth were sent packing, Dice K assumed a long man role and Familia / Mejia stepped up.

@nthmetsfan If you can't trust Rice to get a lefty out, he has no purpose on the team.

Now if they only had a real pitching coach to fix what goes wrong!

@BringBackDaveTelghe @Ramon Pena im not saying that he is a big time prospect im saying that I don't get why is he being mis handled these way he is young and should be playing everyday

@WoodsideNative Outside of Dave Duncan, pitching coaches are incredibly overrated.  Good pitching coaches are generally a product of great talent.  How did Mazzoni do when he left Atlanta?  How about Rick Petersen after he left the A's?  Really, the only guy I've seen routinely take mediocre pitching and improve it was Duncan.

@Ramon Pena @BringBackDaveTelghe  Why do you assume he's being mishandled?  Do you know if he's sulking in the clubhouse?  Is he putting in extra work in BP?  There's lots of young guys in the minors, they have to earn playing time, not have it handed to them based on one big season where he was suspended for juicing.

@anymos do u know what do these three players have in common Jose Bautista Nelson Cruz and Jason Bay when with the Pirates ?
