Jon Niese 13 (Baron)

Gee or Colon could get Opening Day start, if Niese isn’t ready

In the event Jon Niese is not the Opening Day starter, Terry Collins said Tuesday that Dillon Gee or Bartolo Colon will get the ball (Ehalt, Mar. 11).

Niese told SNY on Monday that he expects to get three or four more starts before Opening Day.

The team has yet to officially announce its starting pitcher for the season’s first game. Niese said he has yet to be told anything, as well.

@AVSNY No he stinks ! Colon has 18 wins . Lets trade Wheeler for Adam dunn , trumbo , or Stanton !

This is just stupid!!!  There is no debate here!!!  The best pitcher is Wheeler!!  Start him!!!

Opening day starter is over rated. Just 1 of 162. Not a big deal.

Why do the Mets continue to treat Niese as an Ace? He averages 160 IP, gives up more hits than IP, batters hit him at a .280 clip, his whip is .145, and his K's are well down vs.IP with a career 4.00 era.. Now his arm health is in question. They should trade him as soon as he makes some consecutive starts.Gee has better career #'s while Niese appears in decline. To me, right now he is our forth starter and by mid-season he will get pushed further down to 5th or 6th.

With all our offensive holes, use him to plug one.

@AVSNY the best pitcher should get the ball. As of now, that's probably Colon.

@AVSNY let Colon have opening day. We are paying him to stopgap Harvey, so do it

@AVSNY no I think colon or gee much more deserving. Colon was an al cy candidate & gee pitched far better than wheeler majority of 2013

Opening day should go to the pitcher who has more history with the team more of a track record with the team if its not niese is gee and if its not gee wheeler I don't think colon should be in the mix

Remember the days when we all had the option of having an Avatar and we could check the our brilliant comments to see how many people loved them?!

Those were good times.  Then they went and "enhanced" the comment format.

Mejia should be in the rotation, with montero as the 6th man. Niese is a #3 at best. Why is our GM and coach against making the right decision?

I realize it's the law around here that any time Metsblog references an outside story, they have to mis-paraphrase part of it in a way that completely changes the original meaning...but this is an especially misleading one. Niese didn't hit "only 79 MPH" with his fastball. His very first fastball of the game was 79 MPH. He was up to 89 once he got loose.

where is mejia, I have the feeling that mejia is going to have a great year , if hes giving a chance. d arnaud is not ready yet he needs some more time in the minors, lagares  will be fine by the beginning of the season. here is my startin line up.    first base davis or torres, 2nd murphy ss .......... 3rd wright  right  granderson center lagares  left chris young. pichers  gee, wheeler , niese,  mejia, colon,  for  a total of 79 wins.

Gee had a great season against the Nats last year so I wouldn't mind seeing him start on Opening Day ... But obviously Wheeler is the best pitcher in the rotation but that would make entirely TOO much sense.

Here's what I would like to see, the team on paper in the same line-up, and that means even if it's Tejada and short or some combination of Davis and Duda.

David Knight wants to go to the playoffs.....how nice......Mets fans want the team to go to the World Series. Do they have the players to get there ? No.

Will they get there in the next four years? No. Will they get there in five years? Maybe six?

As long as Wilpon owes $650,000,000.00 to the banks and investors the answer is Hell NO.

Will it change when no one is in the seats at Citi Field? Hell Yes!!

Again TC playing favorites with vets instead of playing the most talented and better player. For the people that say its only game one it does not matter. This and the all star break are the only times of the year you have a definite that your "ace" will match up with the others, giving you the best opportunity to win. I have no problem with Colon in game two because even at his age I think day in and day out he will pitch better than Niese or Gee. Gee is a 5th starter that is it. STOP over valuing him. Its only spring training but if Wheeler out performs everyone else that start should be his. This is not his first appearance in the majors. He had a full second half last year. He knows the hitters he is facing. He gives you the best chance to win game one. Thats it. Last spot should go to either Montero or Mejia. That should be the true competition this year. And don't send either to the bullpen who ever doesn't get it.  Send the other to AAA. Stop over thinking how to handle these guys.

Somewhere, wheeler is saying "what the f***" right about now.  Seriously, TC is a very poor manager for this team. He ALWAYS favors vets over youth, and picks favorites constantly... irregardless of skill.  This is NOT the type of manager you need for a team focused on developing talent. I don't understand it.

Give it to Gee, Niese had his shot last season and I doubt he'll be ready for the start. In 2 outings this Spring he's been blugh!

I know it's early but this start is clearly problematic. Remember the old, 'My arm's not sore, just a little stiff' excuse? Niese is a gutsy guy but let him earn that Opening Day start. I would give it to Wheeler.

Brian Webster

I said it when Niese's shoulder was first given the OK. We have not heard the last of Niese having arm issues. A 79mph FASTBALL!?! This issue with his pitching arm will reemerge in the not too distant future.

Gee v. Zimmerman opening day.  Colon v. Strausberg day 2.  Sounds fair.

hashburry

Gee or Colon possibly starting opening day? And Niese, if he rounds into shape, is the first choice? The reality of this staff is starting to come into focus.  Wheeler has the most upside, but there is nothing about this years staff that sounds like the strength it has so often been touted as.  The reality is it is still a lot of future expectation including Thor can be as good as we think (and he is still a year away from really contributing) and Harvey can come back healthy and regain his form.  On top of that, the bullpen looks like more of the same.  Get a bunch of guys and hope something sticks.  Why can't TC just see the future.  Start Wheeler opening day and put Mejia in the rotation.  You can always find a project/has been like Dice K if he does't work out.

Oh, and finally, the defense will be horrible all year and the hitting, well, it certainly won't make up for the other deficiencies.

1.) I cannot stand TC. I supported him fairly the first couple years. He has no business here. Yeah, EYJR is a great lead off guy, what with his 315 OBP. Gee opening day over Wheeler? Dice K as a 5 and not a young exciting starter in Mejia??? Am I missing something? We won't be a winnig team this year.

2.) I love Niese as much as the next fan, but he has never posted a single full season of effective pitching. That's fine as long as people keep their expectations in check. He's had great opportunities but can quite seize it. Hopefully he'll go bak to using his hook more this year and the cutter maybe 10%.

Who cares who starts opening day!!! What are we doing about the 2 glaring problems we have at SS and 1B??? We will never win 90 games let alone win more than 74 with the current roster we have. Its a joke that we have done NOTHING to upgrade these key positions.

grillruben

This is such a good opportunity to see what Wheeler is made of. If I'm Collins I give him the opening day start, the 1 spot in the rotation, and tell him "This is your chance to own NY. Harvey's not here and who knows what he'll be when he gets back.".   We're talking about a guy we are expecting to anchor our World Series rotation, so let's see if he has the fire to do so in a season we realistically aren't competing.

Raquel Silva
Raquel Silva

I agree and once the season gets going, it's irrelevant. There is no 1-5 order anymore. Just the next day's starter so who cares who starts opening day.

metstastic

He is by default. Colon is too new. Gee has his own share of injuries and inconsistencies. Wheeler is too young. Who do you have left?

@Sylvan Migdal And this surprises you why?  It's gross incompetence by people who get paid for this.

I agree our best pitcher is Wheeler. For his growth I'd rather see him start 3rd or 4th in the rototation and face a lesser pitching opponent opposed to facing every other teams ace and lose a lot of games where he deserves to win.

@greekgod Are we going to have to start referring to David as "The Hoff"?

@Brandon Hillman  i think TC is just playing with us..in the end,he will let Wheeler pitch for the Opening day to give more excitement for the fans. And for me Wheeler deserves it,he's working hard to fit for that position..let's just wait and see

Kenneth Meltsner

@hashburry I agree. The bullpen is a mess. May even be worse than last year. I have zero interest in watching Valverde and Farnsworth.

@sell  TC will never allow a team to win he has crazy ideas wait for his insane shift that will cost us games on routine grounders.

72tilltc
72tilltc

@grillruben  starting opening day is not a big deal it is one game. That aside TC is an idiot.

@Raquel Silva  yeah, obviously Wheeler is the best pitcher on the team, this discussion is only relevant when Harvey, Wheeler, and Syndergaard are all starting, healthy, and allowed to go a full season.

@metstastic  Disagree, Wheeler is young, but he has intangibles none of the current starters have, he is the ace of this current staff.

Seamus Oatis

Doesn't that matchup thing fly out the window by the 3rd week of the season.

That only happens in the first series of the season. After off days, etc, teams aces rarely line up against one another throughout the season.

@Ken Thall @Brandon Hillman like Gee a lot.  He's a solid pitcher that looks like he could be a very good innings eater, and give you 13-15 wins, 11-12 losses.  Keeps you in every game, and saves the pen.  Love these kind of guys.

grillruben
grillruben

@72tilltc I mean Wheeler has gone out of his way to say he would like the start. My issue is that Collins. Sometimes you just gotta give the young guy the keys to the car. Wheeler is by far the most talented pitcher in our rotation right now. All everyone talks about is Syndergaard and Harvey's rehab where if Wheeler were on 15 plus other teams, he would be the headline. I just think it's a good motivational tactic and way to get him extra fired up.

metstastic

Actually, they do line up more times than out.. A lot of teams have the same off day.. Monday or Thursday. If they don't, teams might skip the 5th starter just to line them up.

IMO, if you are facing a particularly great ace, I would punt the game and send the 5th starter in there and save our ace for another game... but then people would complain about competition.
