Dillon Gee 4 (Baron)

Gee could be Opening Day starter, but Colon still an option

Dillon Gee may be named the team’s Opening Day starter (ESPN, March 20). Terry Collins said that it “could still be [Bartolo] Colon,” and he would make a final decision this weekend (Ackert, March 20).

Jon Niese, likely the top candidate to pitch on March 31, will likely start the season on the disabled list. Niese is expected to pitch when the Mets first need a fifth starter on April 6 (ESPN, March 19).

Sandy Alderson also suggested Colon as the Opening Day starter in January (MetsBlog, January 7).

Wheeler. But mostly because Syndergard was cut.

Wheeler or Gee-to be honest glad its not Niese-Niese is nothing more than a mediocre pitcher and trade bait.

oooh.  The Mets beat the Braves in a game where Freeman, Gattis and Uggla and their super shortstop didn't play.  Impressed??

Who starts on opening day means nothing. Who makes it to 32 starts means everything.

My philosophy is that you give it to your best pitcher. And right now, on paper, Colon is their best pitcher based on last year and the last couple of years. He deserves to make the opening day start.

The opening day starter doesn't matter. If it's not Harvey, they are six of one and half dozen of the other, all solid, all capable, nothing spectacular. Niese's injury, which I'm not convinced we've heard the last of, shows how important it is to have pitching depth and we, at least, do have that. We can trade from that strength, I just hope when we do, which is inevitable considering the paucity of position player talent in the minor league system, we pick the right guy. Wheeler was our choice for SP of the future via trade and we got a solid return. Travis d'Arnaud was our choice for catcher of the future via trade and the jury is still out on him. If we are going to trade for a SS of the future, we can't bet on the wrong horse. A lot hinges on this move.

How the hell is colon even considered a starter, he belongs in the minors.

Watching baseball tonight and they just mentioned Yankees spent almost 1/2 a billon dollars on FA this offseason, 491M to be exact. I sat here thinking wow, I know we're not the Yankees can't be compared business model blah blah but man, mets fans don't know what that feels like

We have no opening day shortstop or first baseman.  Isn't that the bigger issue?

Gee. You don't give the ball to a guy on opening day, who's never had a MLB opening day before.

Just give Wheeler the #1 slot. He's a big boy, he can handle going up against other teams aces. Losing some close games due to a lack of offense isn't going to be an issue, especially given the attitude he's shown so far.

Gee might have the seniority but Wheeler has an edginess I like for opening day. Colon should be 5th.

Really, what is the problem with Wheeler starting on Opening Day?  Give it to the guy who earned it.

Really? The guy could have won the cy young last year. Let's give him one or two actual starts before we write him off as a minor leaguer.

@Victor Triguero Amen, who gives a sh&t?  This team has so many issues right now that opening day starter is just a pointless distraction.

Yeah right. Sell the only cash-cow you have at your disposal.

@bockers oh jeez, give it up already. Wilpons will not sell. Stop wasting your time.

@Kenneth Meltsner If you're going to go by who earned it then Gee should be the starter.

@hankincolo @bockers  If no one is in the stands they would be forced to sell .....but since fans want to go to see a  team with the kids that would  be unlikely. Too bad. Can you imagine 5000 seats filled in June, July, August and September. Ouch!
