The Mets lost to the Yankees, 4-0, at Citi Field on Wednesday >> Read a full AP recap and boxscore at SNY.TV.
Need to Know: Yankees RHP Masahiro Tanaka dominated the Mets, pitching a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits, while striking out eight batters and dazzling with his signature split-finger fastball. The Mets never got a runner to third base.
Mets rookie RHP Rafael Montero made his big-league debut. He was charged with three runs on five hits, including home runs by Mark Teixeira and Yangervis Solarte. He kept the ball in the strike zone, as advertised, but also needed 69 pitches to get through three innings. He ended up leaving the game having thrown 108 pitches, more than any start he had this year in Triple-A.
Eric Young Jr. missed a fly ball trying to make a diving catch, with two outs and a runner on first base and the pitcher on deck. The run eventually scored giving the Yankees an early lead.
The Mets and Yankees conclude their four-game, home-and-away series at Citi Field on Thursday at 7:10 pm, when Yankees RHP Chase Whitley faces Mets rookie RHP Jacob deGrom, who will be making his big-league debut.
