Game Recap: Yankees 4, Mets 0

The Mets lost to the Yankees, 4-0, at Citi Field on Wednesday >> Read a full AP recap and boxscore at SNY.TV.

Need to Know: Yankees RHP Masahiro Tanaka dominated the Mets, pitching a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits, while striking out eight batters and dazzling with his signature split-finger fastball. The Mets never got a runner to third base.

Mets rookie RHP Rafael Montero made his big-league debut. He was charged with three runs on five hits, including home runs by Mark Teixeira and Yangervis Solarte. He kept the ball in the strike zone, as advertised, but also needed 69 pitches to get through three innings. He ended up leaving the game having thrown 108 pitches, more than any start he had this year in Triple-A.

Eric Young Jr. missed a fly ball trying to make a diving catch, with two outs and a runner on first base and the pitcher on deck. The run eventually scored giving the Yankees an early lead.

The Mets and Yankees conclude their four-game, home-and-away series at Citi Field on Thursday at 7:10 pm, when Yankees RHP Chase Whitley faces Mets rookie RHP Jacob deGrom, who will be making his big-league debut.

Tanaka is the real deal among pitchers; but. if the Mets had better hitters, we could have gotten to him. The Mets needs to add players who can get more timely hits and HRs. We can't win games by good pitching alone, gotta have those bats to make a difference.

Maybe they just can't hit East of the FDR Drive. It's as if all they have to do is see Citifield and the bats go silent. There is a lesson to be learned from yesterday's game: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Right now, Tanaka is the only thing keeping the Yankees away from irrelevance. They commit to Tanaka. We commit to Valverde and Farnsworth (albeit briefly). They've got a front-of-rotation guy for the next decade. Team has played well of late. That guy was unhittable last night (and he didn't even have his best stuff). More troubling were those brain-farts in the outfield and on basepaths. Hustle is one thing. Bonehead play is another. Most iconic Met Moment of the night was Tanaka getting his first ML hit off Valverde--while Met pitchers are now something like 0-64. Makes one long for the plate discipline of Dae Song Koo.

Again NO RUN PRODUCTION, when are the Mets going to get it? YOU MUST SCORE RUNS TO WIN GAMES. Get a BIG BAT!!!!!!!

EYJr is not that great of a player but thinks he is superman and can do no wrong. A three base error that scored a run with the pitcher on deck is inexcusable. It was not a hit but a dumb decision. Tanaka lived up to his billing and didn't need EYJr's help. Montero pitched well with no run support.

Get EYJ  out of the starting lineup already. Was last night finally enough?

I don't remember ever having back to back starts from rookies for the Mets?  EY should have been charged with an error. That was not a triple. Montero held his own.

Montero did ok....no bats from mets  off, which obviously  did them in. . And while I understand why ey is in lineup, not sure why Legaes wasn't...u can sit c young..

...i wish the freakin cubs had gotten this freakin tanaka charactar...i would find the yankees so much more fun without him as they would  be really really bad....hopefully we win tonight and take 3 out of 4...

Montero looked pretty good - I just could not believe that bone head move by EY in the outfield. The pitcher was up next! Just keep the ball in front of you and Chris Young's base running blunder was ridiculously stupid. We were only down 2-0 at that point and we had Duda and Recker coming up - guys with some pop. Tanaka was pretty much light out anyway but GRRRRRRRR! REALLY want to win tomorrow so we can take the series 3 out of 4. Let's Go METS!

Hopefully Tanaka shutting them down like that doesn't put the bats in a funk for another couple weeks

Montero looked solid, seemed his nerves got to him, but he still had a "quality start." Tanaka was just untouchable tonight. Tough break for the Mets.

Throughout his entire Major League career, Tanaka has always owned the Mets

@AdamRubinESPN: #Mets saved about $750k releasing Farnsworth today that they would have been on the hook for starting tomorrow.

Every penny counts in Wilponland!!

In all I like what I see in Montero, and if it wasn't for EY miss played in the 1st inning Montero would have allowed 2 runs in six and 4 hits

Our payroll is now down to 75.7 million and falling!

Well good pitching will do that. Mets were due for a little down draft and they certainly got it. Let's see how they respond tomorrow. Things are still on the right path.

Good now release someone at the coaching position especially the hitting coach

@AdamRubinESPN: Kyle Farnsworth was related to advance consent agreement he signed. Only have to pay him for 45 days -- not full season. Today was deadline.

Typical Wilpon move, trying to save a few dollars.

Tanaka was brilliant. It didn't matter who was in the Mets line-up tonight, Lagares or no Lagares. Winning the fourth game is worth looking forward to.

Kyle Farnsworth has been released. That's winning in my book.

0 concern, as the guy we faced hasn't lost in 42 straight appearances. Get the W tomorrow and take 3 of 4.

Welcome back to Citi Mets.

Solarte shot was interesting, because maybe he found the key to hitting them out of Citi. Texiera shot was one of those, "look what I can do" type of shots. If he dove in and leaned over, then the mets have to do that, and if the yankees hit your guy in response to doing the same thing, ya gotta answer.

Montero took the lost but I like what I saw from him. It was a tough task going against Tanaka but he battled and kept the team in the game. Montero will be fine. I look forward to his next start.

@iamwilpon  Maybe they should teach Hefner that splitter. Teach somebody ours that pitch!

@tullydew You're right, we should have wasted that cash on a washed up reliever to show how committed the front office is to winning.

Brian Webster

@ponzies86 You mean if it wasn't for TCs love affair with EY and he wasn't on the bench where he belongs with Lagares starting. CY in LF almost certainly makes that play

@tullydew  You don't really want him on the team, do you? He's terrible.

@tullydew Ah, that explains it.  Should have known it was related to $$$.

@Peter Ramirez Wow.  He goes before Valverde, despite being the "closer" for weeks.  I'm surprised by that.

@dreamer3kx Well that's because he had to talk about the NY Rangers. Everyone knows what a huge hockey fan he is and how he loves to talk about it.

@mets63  Montero has far better location than Wheeler could ever have. besides it was his first start and against the Yanks. He only allowed 3 runs on 5 hits in six and 1 of those runs was a miss played ball by the outfielder

@bingmets  Wasn't Farnsy cut by the mets during spring training and brought back after parnell went down?  Not like he was distinguishing himself.

@tullydew  Does Valverde have a guaranteed contract? If he does, he's not going anywhere.

@1harris1  Mets went cheap route, farnsworth had 45 day contract that would of turned into a full year contract if he stayed one more day
