Game Recap: Reds 2, Mets 1

Need to Know: Jon Niese started for the Mets in his season debut, allowing two earned runs over 5 2/3 innings. He gave up six hits, walked one and struck out four on 90 pitches.

Reds pitchers Alfredo Simon and Manny Parra stymied the Mets hitters, allowing just four hits and one earned run. They struck out eight Mets, who have now struck out 61 times in six games.

Juan Lagares was the only Met to drive in a run, singling in Ike Davis after he doubled in the second inning. Davis also singled in the seventh inning.

Eric Young picked up a double as well.

Gonzalez Germen, Kyle Farnsworth and Jose Valverde combined to shut out the Reds in their 3 1/3 innings.

Game Ball: Niese, who looked good in his debut. But, most importantly, he stayed healthy and injury-free.

What’s Next: The Mets have Monday off, then travel to Atlanta for their first away game of the season. They play Tuesday night, a 7 p.m. game.

I like Terry Collins and usually defend him with the logic that he doesn't have the talent needed for success. But I watched him leave Gee and Neise in their recent starts too long. Anyone who watches these two guys knows that they run out of gas around inning 6. To me, they are just good long men. I know that Terry hasn't got confidence in the bullpen. But when these two pitchers continually spit the bit around the 6th, TC should take them out. To me, TC's decision (or Warthen's) has contributed to two losses.

So far thru 6 games first base has 3 homers and 8 rbis, can't complain ab that. Also tejeda hasn't been horrible, and making all the routine plays. I'm very worried ab Tda and left field. I actually can't wait to see what CY brings, even tho I don't think he's that great he's gotta be better then EY. When Cy comes back I hope legares leadsoff.

Mets for years have not been able to handle spot starters and newbies though their hitting has been dubious at the start overall. Sort of a waste of a good bullpen performance, but it is a good sign anyhow. A sweep is hard and unlikely given Mets history of late. To look at glass half full sorta  Still, these sorts of games where hitting is like pulling teeth is akin to a dentist appointment for me.

Anyone else get more and more impressed with Ojeda when you hear him interviewed ? I think this guy would be a really good manager. He's a realist and he seems to get it.

Team .178 batting average, dead last in the league.

Its great to have that spurt of power[Duda and Davis] but we need more consistent hitting and players that get on base in order to drive them in.What good is young pitching when your defense is so so and your hitting bad?

These are the games I really would like to see them win.  The 3rd game of the series they have already won.  We gotta win these.

Tough Loss, Our pitching will keep us in these games we need to put better at bats than we did today

D'Arnaud O for 2014.

Granderson forgets how to hit as soon as he becomes a Met.

This team is cursed. I suggest a new owner and getting Citi off the name of the stadium

This team continues to be unable to string hits together for runs.

An absolute disgrace. Nice offense.

The Reds were ripe for the taking.  They're still trying to adjust to life being Choo-less.

And if things couldn't get worse, 81 of their next 156 are on the road!!!!!

Frustrating, if the Wilpons would've just spent a few bucks on a couple of more bats perhaps this team would be able to compete with their pitching (even without Harvey).  Unfortunately this goes with the territory of having small market owners.

We lost the game because murphy and wright stunk today....that is all. When you currently only have two legit major league hitters (for average) and neither one does squat in a particular game, you will lose 99% of the time.

As of right now we are dead last (30th) in the majors with a .178 team BA and dead last in the majors with a .251 team OBP. The dbacks and dodgers have a few more K's than us, but they've both played more games than us too. Im honestly surprised we've even won 2 of 6.

@Steven Matregrano

Even though the Mets had won a series against a good team, doesn't take away from the fact that we have no hitting.  Through 6 games Mets hitters are hitting .178, which is absolutely dead last in MLB.  Yes, dead last in the entire majors.  That isn't overreacting, instead that is an alarming stat after the 1st week of the season.  And realistically, It doesn't seem like it's going to get much better when CY enters the line up, but hopefully I'm wrong.  We have no spots to place anyone if we bring them up from the Minors except Kirk or Puello for the time being while CY is on the DL.  We have no hope at SS with Tejada, he isn't going to hit.  We have nobody to take his spot if we were to bring up someone to replace him.  Cecchini is a few years away from the majors if he even gets here.  We have no depth at many positions to bring in a bat or two.  Ultimately, this trade deadline, someone should be traded for a bat, hopefully Degrom or a Walters type and a good SS should be offered a contract by the Mets this off season.  Mets have excellent pitching in their farm, which makes them perfect candidates to become a good team very quickly, but they need to make moves to bring in better ball players.

@Steven Matregrano  it seems to be pretty popular early on amongst "fans" to bash Wright. not saying it wouldn't have been nice if he came through in a few spots today, but it's like his career body of work is ignored over a few at bats.

he also, apparently, pads his stats.

nymess

@Albert E Lewis  i agree, but outside of Murphy and Wright, none of the batters in the lineup have a track record for being consistently good hitters, with only Wright having a high career OBP.

unfortunately, can't expect this team to do much more than hit in spurts and hope the pitching keeps things close. i know there are unproven players that might step up offensively (Lagares, D'Arnaud, maaaaaaaaaybe Ike),  but if history is any indication, consistent isn't a word that will describe this lineup. there are pieces missing.

@brrrandooo Aye, Niese looked very good, and they pulled him after 90.  Was happy to see that.

metsfanman

@brrrandooo  Agreed. One time through the rotation (twice for Gee), every Mets starting pitcher has given the team a chance to win. Hope Wright can get going and the offense can improve in future games. Also hope replacing Eric Young Jr. with Chris Young (when he returns from the DL) will give the offense a boost.

@steve333  Grandereson is who we thought he was, he's going to strike out a lot and not hit for average.  I expect .250 25-27 85-90

For some reason the Mets seem to play better on the road, last year they were

41-40.

@mets2891  Cruz and CY got similar contracts... That's all I'll say.

You're clearly not a met fan. Okay he didn't come thru THIS game n it's only 6 games in yet you're bashing him? He hasn't had help since 07-08 he's been alone yet hold damn near every mets record or will when he's done. Bash him at the end of the season when he so call blows it in your mind. Not everyone produce at every critical moment. Learn to be a fan before you speak again.

If you get the MiLB.Tv package for $12 a month you can watch the las vegas games. I usually watch the mets at 7 and switch to vegas and watch a few innings at 10 pm before going to bed. Syndegaard was solid his first start as well

@vimets That's unusual for a losing team.  Usually, winning teams play around .500 on the road, and kill at home.  Losing teams usually play horrible on the road.

nncyel

@DMMP @mets2891  And they'll probably have similar stats this year. Cruz is a little better offensive player, CY a lot better defensive player. Mets are valuing defense in the outfield. CY fit that criterion better than Cruz.

yankeehater
yankeehater

@Steven Matregrano Yeah they mean nothing at all...because we all know how much better the mets offense actually is (that would be sarcasm). Our offense stinks now and will continue to stink....maybe not dead last but easily in the bottom 10.

metsfanman

@Joseph DeFazio  If either Murphy or Wright could have come through when they had runners on 2nd and 3rd with even a single (with EYJr. being the fast runner on 2nd), the entire complexion of the game would have changed. In today's specific game, a single by either of them (or perhaps even a Sac Fly or RBI groundout by Murphy when he batted with one out) might have been good enough. That was the most frustrating moment of the game for me. Had a bad feeling they were gonna lose when they had a golden opportunity to add on to their 1-0 lead and didn't.
