Game Recap: Padres 6 – Mets 0

Result: The Padres beat the Mets, 6-0, on Saturday night in San Diego, evening their series heading into Sunday’s rubber match.

Need to Know: Dillon Gee struggled in his second start back from the disabled list, allowing four earned runs on five hits over five innings, despite eight strikeouts. Solo home runs from Yasmani Grandal and Will Venable were the big blows against Gee, and Seth Smith added a homer against Carlos Torres. The Mets were shut out for the eighth time this year and the first time since June 14, when another Padres starter, Jesse Hahn, kept them off the scoreboard.

Gee was up and was rushing his delivery last night. He just needs to slow it down a little and turn that fastball over and he will be fine.

Any of you guys have Slingbox .com ? I'm heading down to North Wildwood ( PHILLY TERRITORY) and MLB.TV doesn't give you pre and post game. I will pay you to access your sling box to watch the game from my PC. email me if you have it.

ajdmm (at) optonline (dot) net

I own the largest optin email data company in USA dbe.name and if you have a business I will also give you several thousand dollars in free data if you can hook me up with slingbox. access. My cable company ( Cablevision ) is blocking my slingbox signal due to firewall I have on internet as I also have home office. So I need access to a slingbox to watch Mets while on vacation as my wife yells at me for watching games while away! Some of you neurotic Mets fans may understand.

Thanks!

The old adage in baseball is true: Good pitching beats good hitting. Same line-up 2 days in a row and yesterday we get shut-out. PITCHING! Look at the Giants 2 WS teams and they won due to PITCHING -defense and TIMELY HITTING. a guy like Cody Ross comes up big!

Our hitting is going to improve EVEN with the guys we have here now.  Expect improvements from: JLAG, DUDA, TRAVIS, KIRK AND SOUP.

Those that will maintain their skills but put up better numbers due to the OTHERS improving: DW, CURTIS, MURPHY, RUBEN.

You really can't point to anyone and say I think this person is NOW at a point where skills will slide downward significantly. Therefore I am positive on Mets future and I really don't want to TRADE AWAY pitching as it gets hurt constantly.

I rather spend MONEY to acquire a Big Bat in the off season and not over spend now as we are going nowhere this year. Bobby A is taking up a spot that a kid like Flores should take. Ruben should have been pinch hit for last night.

HARVEY-WHEELER-GEE-NIESE-DEGROM.  Don't trade them. Thor comes up in August/Sept and start him even if it means 6 man rotation. Guys in BP in 2015 waiting for Injury to happen: Thor and Hefner and Carlos--all can start in case of injury. Gee will be the most likely to go first because he is arb eligible and Mets can't afford $12 million per for Gee.

Targte Owens from AZ in offseason. He's very good at ss and at MLB minimum $.  If Hefener comes back and throws 6 good games AZ may take a pitcher like Hefner and and OF like MDD or KIRK and our ss in Nevada ( Matt Reynolds).  MDD and KIRK are basically the same player for us right now. High AAAA type player that projects as a 4th/5th OF on a very good OF.

Look for the kid Herrara to replace Murphy at 2B. If teh Mets have not yet offered Murphy anything yet as far as extension --THE WRITING IS ON THE WALL. Mets will not pay Murphy $12 million per.

I think the Mets have a great trade piece. I think he's desirable to almost every team in baseball, but can be expendable to the Mets. Between his skills, his salary, length of contract he would bring back something decent if they would decide to move him.Dice K.

@2ndhalffun. I definitely won't be raising my kids with participation trophies. Great point. Die hard fan since my first game at Shea in the beginning of 85.

It's amazing how those posting negative comments know nothing about baseball. Probably couldn't hit a BP fastball, or explain the infield fly rule. Go away!!! You don't deserve to be here when the Mets do make a run

That guy last night was good, very good. I am not ready to push the panic button yet so lets see what happens today.

I'm pretty confident in Wheeler and the bats to wake up today and leave SD with a

series win which would be great. That dude Ross has some nasty stuff so I think it was more a matter of that then our bats starting to go cold again.

Just a bump in the road last night, fella's.We'll get em today.

And so it goes...... The Mets in need of making a solid statement made one. It is just not the one we all wanted them to make :{ It is the same statement they make every time they have a chance or need to make one. This is the team you get, we play good, them we choke, we will tease but never deliver. This is the life of a Mets fan :} Perhaps next season will be better when Harvey gets back. I am tired of hearing that, enough is enough, it's like the team was camping at CitiField rather than the fans. Way to go mets!!!!!!

I can see it now .. Citi Field lights are dim, and all the campers are tucked in their tents when all of a sudden ... EVERY-BODY CLAP YOUR HANDS ...

Last time the Mets were shut out in San Diego before this one was almost 13 years ago, August 14, 2001.  The Mets were held scoreless in that one despite three hits by Mike Piazza,  while Steve Trachsel allowed 6 runs in four IP as the Mets lost by the same 6-0 score we faced tonight.

If we lose tomorrow we will have a losing roadtrip and the good times will end.

We can afford a big bat for the push , why arnt we doing it? Same ole same ole crap.

I was never sold on Murphy I can't believe fans hated the fact Mets were shopping him. SMH if you know Baseball it would be the right thing to do, Murphy already peaked his talent and isn't going to get better. the guy is below average fielder and streaky hitter.

On a bright note, the Red Sox released A.J. Pierzynski, paving the way for Sandy to bring us another aging piece we don't need.

NO! THE METS JUST DIDN'T HIT. WRIGHT NOT HITTING (279), MURPHY 1 FOR 14, Lets see if we can win tomorrow,

@2ndhalffun Arizona will not make that trade.  You offered them nothing of value for their starting SS.

@2ndhalffun I agree on Murphy, don't seem him staying past next year unless he signs a team friendly deal.  I think we will see Flores in the short term and then Herrera longer term at 2B.

James
James

@gizzymhv Dice K is not going to bring back too much at this point, I thought he would for a while there, but he has been just inconsistent enough with his track record that he would not fetch a lot of value in return.  One of those protypical might be worth more to us than another team.  Hope i am wrong, but I don't see him fetching any real real value.

@Wayne Pavia  They get those trophies automatically from all recreation and travel teams. I have 3 kids and over 100 trophies collected in 15 years of sports. LOL.

@shawnp6986 I really want to have confidence in Wheeler shutting down a bad team, but he has been so inconsistent.  I really hope he steps up big this second half, it will mean a lot for 2015.

@Jim Yager What statement were they supposed to make last night?  You can't expect the Mets to win every game.  Trust me, in no way am I happy with this team or under the illusion that they have turned things around.  But I am also not going to write off their recent success because they lose one game and fail to score against a very very good pitcher right now.  They won 3 of 4 against the Braves, swept the Marlins, and have a chance to take 2 of 3 from the Padres.  If they win this series that is a decent statement from the team and if they go on to more success on this road trip than even better.  Two games into the "half" of the season and we already have comments like this.   What annoys me more than the team is fans like yourself who get pumped when the Mets win two games in a row and say the season has turned around and then when the Mets lose their next game they suddenly are the worst team in the world.

Honestly,I'm shocked anyone would pay the $200 or $300 to go lay out on Citi field,I think It's an absolute ridiculous publicity stunt by these owners. But,what else would you expect from the Wilpons?

But,dont forget,you get that nice,comfy Mets pillow a value of $10 absolutely free!!Such nice guys,those Wilpons.

You're living in a fantasy world if you believe this team is making any "push" to the post season this year. A push to .500 is more like it.

Silly post. What push? What big bat? What spelling!

joe21

Which bat is available? Please provide specifics rather than just request something generic and also provide a realistic inventory of what has to be given. Truth is, the Bat you are looking for is not likely to be available right now and anything you might get would require an overpay. Not to mention the best that Bat might do is help chase a WC. Is that worth an overpay?

Billy Suede

@ponzies86 it's called a slump. they happen which is why people need to relax about the second half comeback. there are going to be slumps and when the starting pitching struggles, the offense isn't consistent enough to bail them out. this is an example.

get the series and move forward.

@rico @Wayne Pavia Not only Sports fans on the Internet. Basically people like to complain than praise. Sports, Politics, Religion, Education. What bugs me the most as an original Mets fan in 1962 is the young people that complain so much. I've seen 2 WS since 1962. These kids are all growing up with participation trophies and expect life to be easy and have little frustration. We are finally turning the corner and I do see light at the end of the tunnel. I just hope Fred can afford to maintain it once it comes.

@jose_who @Kyle Suta This game is huge to maintain momentum.  This team has a lot of post-AS break history fighting it and a losing mentality in that clubhouse.  If we start off the break losing a series to a bad team in SD then go off on play too good teams in their parks we are in for another bad second half.

Hard for a game on 7/20 to mean a lot for a mediocre team.  but this is the type of game they have blown for 4 years running now, we need to pick this one up.

Billy Suede
Billy Suede

@jose_who @Kyle Suta no, but to even imagine a sniff of the playoffs, the mets have to win series. losing to a team with one of the worst offenses in baseball doesn't offer much confidence in achieving that end. if the mets are serious about a push, this is the one of those series you have to win

2ndhalffun
2ndhalffun

You nailed it Joe! Mets are settled at every position right now other than looking at upgrading ss and OF. We all agree JLAG and Curtis need to play everyday. That leaves LF. Recently Soup and Kirk have been doing well and they can left/right platoon. COnforto may be in Queens by Sept 2015. So going out and OVERPAYING now to get a VERY OUTSIDE chance at a 1 game wildcard is as Joe said not realistic. You wanna give the PHillies a minor league decent pitching prospect for Byrd and Kirk or Matt DenDeker for this year and next that's maybe doable---but you're better off continuing to develop MDD Soup and Kirk in LF until you see what you have available to obtain in offseason.

Not with the chemicals they use. Nothing can live on that field for more than 20 minutes.

Joseph J. Ruffino

@2ndhalffun  Believe Kirk should be played every day to see if he could be the missing link in the outfield.  Believe he has the ability to be another Duke Snider even if relegated to left field.
